Great stuff again KL.

Flemenstar got the trip fine, any horse that goes that close over three miles round Leopardstown on tacky ground has to stay. He just isn't as effective if you don't ride him without fear like they have done this far. There's a fair chance he'll win the Grade 1 in Feb as they are sure to be more positive and he probably won't face as much competition for the lead. His stamina isn't exhaustive but he has enough to get home in Irish three milers. They may well be better off if he got touched off again though as it could tempt them to go for the GC when the Ryanair is there for the taking.

I'm a little bit concerned about SDC as he continues to show the lethargy that was on display in the Durkan. He didn't jump nor travel like he can and yet still was only beat less than a length which was mainly owed to his guts and stamina. I'm hoping it's down to the ground and also he probably still isn't at concert pitch. Still you'd imagine he'd travel better within himself during the races before things heat up.

While it was a great race to watch looking at it in the cold light of day you couldn't be too excited over the form. An eleven year old beat a horse in cheek pieces and a horse that never went a yard was on their coat tails. The only horse I can see making the leap for the GC is SDC and I wasn't surprised to see Bobs Worth shorten given the Newbury form. The past three days has really eliminated a host of potential winners of chasings Blue Riband.

I would think the first four home are legitimate contenders for the Gold cup.
On soft ground at Cheltenham Tidal bay will take some beating.
On better ground the other three all have a decent chance, especially the two Gigginstown horses

The likes of Tidal Bay and the Lieutenant are fine horses that would go well over 3m2f in Cheltenham but i'd be a bit disappointed if they were gold cup winners (though both are still at least as good as Synchronised was you'd have to say).

At the start of the season there was a lot of talk about new challengers for the crown emerging, especially from this side of the Irish Sea. We are about ten or eleven weeks from Cheltenham now though and the only two to really make their mark are Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti (couldn't have him on my mind either but he did beat Long Run so it's a fair level of form) out of the second season chasers. Flemenstar is a fabulous horse that'll win plenty of good races but he won't stay the GC trip. SDC has to make another leap and as big a fan as I am the current 8/1 is only fair. Mouses horse is the type that could easily place but I see no reason why he'll turn it around with Bobs Worth who was only going away from him in the RSA.

I've been go there for donkeys years with the exception of this year and the PP is always the biggest day, with the people of Tallaghtstan arrive en-masse with their freebies.

Never been a big fan of Leopardstown at Christmas mainly because of the big less than knowlegable crowds. Couldn't resist the temptation today and while it was good days racing the entry charge of 25 euro was a rip off and you could barely hear the commentary with the chatter of the "fans" during the races.Monksland saved the day and at one stage I thought PC had given up the ghost on him. Does Sir De Champs appear to be regressing?. Didnt jump or travel today and had a really hard race that may leave its mark.

There were about 1300 more there today officially though with the amount of PP freebies yesterday it wouldn't be a surprise if the real figure was closer as those tickets often aren't properly accounted for.

If you think back to last season Santry, Sir de champs was far from impressive at Limerick over christmas or when winning at Leopardstown in January. I think he is a Spring horse and if i had to back one for the Gold cup from todays race, he would be the one

Tend to agree SDC is the most likely Gold Cup winner in todays race buts thats mainly because flemenstar didnt appear to stay and its hard to see a horse that will be 12 years old winning. He will probably improve a little with better ground in the spring but I think French bred horses do not progress with time in the same way Irish breds do . These Grade 1 races are brutal affairs with no hiding places and SDC had a hard race today and at Punchestown so i'm not certain he will progress.

Queen Mother target for Flemenstar
Last Updated: December 29 2012, 10:59 GMT

Flemenstar is set to have the Queen Mother Champion Chase as his Cheltenham Festival target following his reverse in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown.

After putting previously unbeaten chaser Sir Des Champs to the sword with a brilliant display in the two-and-a-half-mile John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase, Flemenstar was a hot favourite for the feature event of Leopardstown's Christmas meeting, but still had to prove his stamina over three miles.

Having travelled and jumped with his trademark panache under Andrew Lynch, the seven-year-old looked poised to go on and record an impressive victory rounding the home turn, but the complexion of the race quickly changed.

Profiles Peter Casey Flemenstar (IRE)
Flemenstar appeared a weary horse after jumping the final fence and although he stuck to his task well enough to finish third, beaten just three-quarters of a length by Tidal Bay in a barnstorming finish, Casey feels his stable star's stamina limitations were exposed.

The trainer does not feel it would be right to test his charge over an extended three and a quarter miles at Cheltenham in March and with the two-mile-five-furlong Ryanair Chase seemingly of no appeal, he is set to tackle the formidable Sprinter Sacre over the minimum trip instead.

Asked about whether the Gold Cup was still being considered, Casey said: "We'll have to rule that out. He won't get that extra two furlongs.

"You'd think he was going to win coming to the last fence (in the Lexus), he was cruising. He just found nothing after the last 100 yards.

"The Queen Mother, that will be it. The two-mile Champion Chase. That will be the one we'd go for."

Casey is confident that Flemenstar is capable of shaking up the current Champion Chase favourite Sprinter Sacre.

"Our lad is a great jumper and has plenty of speed. He jumped well (on Friday) but every time he landed he was wanting to get going," said the trainer.

"In Cheltenham, if we went for the Queen Mother, he'd have to go there, Andrew would be letting him stride on and we'd give that other lad (Sprinter Sacre) something to think about then!

"That's what we're going to try and do anyway."

Casey will consult Flemenstar's owner before deciding on a next port of call, but is leaning away from another crack at three miles in the Hennessy Gold Cup back at Leopardstown in February.

Casey said: "We'll have to think about where we go next and talk to the owner.

"I don't think we'll go for the Hennessy. There is the Red Mills Chase at Gowran in the middle of February. Whether we'll go down there or not I don't know."

IMO Lexus day is the purest days racing of the year. The combination of Christmas Atmosphere, all the nadgers having had their day at the races the previous 2 days, usually an English presence and the 2 grade 1 chases sandwiching the 3 Mile Hurdle make it as good a day out as any. My most memorable days racing ever was the day Best Maite came over and won the race back in the day. The single biggest gamble in terms of money exchange I ever saw

Good to see that they read the writing on the wall yesterday and are looking at shorter trips for Flemenstar. He always appeared to want to go a stride faster than the field and 2/2.5 miles will be ideal. Looking forward to his next run and could see him beating Sprinter Sacre.

Flemenstar has no chance of beating Spinter Sacre over 2m in England.

If going to Cheltenham should go for /Ryanair.
