Great card is an understatement, going for Hidden Cyclone e/w  to turn around course form with SDC when reported sick, like to think he has a chance of having a decent cut off Flemenstar over the trip which will bring the needed improvement.

Big day for Mount Benbulben as well and his jumping will be put to the test against a couple of hot pots.

One horse il be keeping a close eye is foxrock in the 1st race, for a shrewd combo of trainer and owner,if there is a few quid for this will be very interesting,
Report keen leader December 27, 2012 10:20 PM GMT
outside looking in, it is 2-0 to the punters at leopardstown. the odds on players have to date enjoyed a feast. i think day 3 will see the fav layers reel it all back with profit.

i had good word for foxrock when it was due to point last spring, missed the engagement and done enough without sparkling at loughrea. i dont rate it good enough to win the opener, shocked it can be laid less than 2/1 here, ought to be a 5/1 shot all day long, probably the feel good factor from colbert station kicking in. the sizing horse was far more impressive, won without blowing a candle earlier this month. with him thunder and roses plus elliotts and moores in the mix, not alone should foxrock be win laid, place lay return also a player.

zaidpour doesnt appear to like the track and could beat himself, while back in focus is my idea of a coaster, great when allowed to do his own thing, not a shred of evidence he will battle under pressure, and unless they all fall around him, he will be tested here.

betting at limerick is a joke given conditions. the bumper tomorrow contains 7 donkeys and a racehorse, again a bit like malt gem, unless you have you ear to the ground, you would not realise that prideofthecastle was a player. he is decent, whether he copes with the ground is guesswork, 100% he is the most talented in that race, damien needs one more winner to lose his 5lb claim after all these years, hope it works out for him here.

3 star lay back in focus
2 star lay foxrock
1 star lay zaidpour.

Cronins horse is bred to handle the conditions as well as any of them but it'll all be academic anyway as they can't race tomoro if they have a cell in their brains. I was being called waterlogged today and there has been significant rain this evening and tonight to boot.

Agreed re. Foxrock. It would go against all known betting principles for a horse making his racecourse debut to be that short in a Leopardstown maiden hurdle given the quite reasonable depth in competition. It is probably a harsh enough assessment of Zaidpour to say he doesn't go at the track given the only two horses to beat him there were Oscars Wells and First Lietenant. This staying hurdle crack in Ireland should suit him given they'll lob away and he can quicken out of heavy ground. It's his true vocation. It'll be interesting to see what Murphy has to say about VLV. Given she seemingly made a noise in the Hattons Grace the only procedure they could have done to get her back this quickly is the laser which is really a stop gap measure. Monksland is improving but Zaidpour has it in the book.

At the start of the week Back in Focus looked a bet to me at 7/4 but everything has stood their ground and it is a very competitive heat. I still think he's the most likely winner but there will definitely be races run in the next few days where you can back similarly priced horses without facing as many possible dangers.

I said it before the Durkan and nothing that happened then changed my mind. Come March SDC will be Irelands best Gold Cup contender. I cannot believe that a horse that races as hard as Flemenstar can keep it up over that trip. SDC on the other hand will go round there for the first circuit on a loose rein. It is a quite fantastic card.

workrider,it was a shame as he was jumping better than ever just before he belted that one and I thought he'd settled well in behind the leaders and no real sign of pulling the way he normally does, the stirrup got caught under the jockey which sealed his fate.
Report Vubiant December 28, 2012 2:46 PM GMT
Doesn't really matter who rides 'em.
Andrew Lynch did exactly the same as Ruby -but horse had a sketchy jump at the last and Back In Focus is a doughty stayer who gallantly answered the call. Lynch was not 'outridden' by Walsh - Aupcharlie was outstayed by BIF.
Note Mr Sam Waley-Cohen (amateur jockey) who got back up on Long Run after that horse had a few untidy jumps near the end.
It's because Waley-Cohen did exactly the same as any professional jockey would do and Long Run's stamina did the rest.
Examples of same available about 300 days a year to those who open their eyes and look at the evidence.

Just a great afternoons racing today, didn't think there'd be a better race than the christmas hurdle, but then the lexus topped it. Thought for a few strides Tom Doyle might have nicked it on Whatuthink but the pack got it just about right and Carberry gave Monksland a stunning ride to get him home. Great raceriding all round.
Would still like to give Flemenstar another chance over a trip on better ground, still thought he ran a cracking race today, jumped and travelled like a dream, in all likelihood isn't a stayer though and thats a bit sad because he looks the real deal otherwise.
Also a bit silly to be saying the man on top makes no material difference, for definitive proof you just have to compare the performances of Walsh and Townend today, the latter has a long way to go before he's a fit replacement for ruby at willie's.

Ruby getting Back in focus up to pip Aupcharlie on the line broke my heart but luckily i lost my temper and had double my intended bet on Tidal Bay as i licked my wounds. I also had a small each way saver on First Lieutenant.

I then finished the day with a nice bet on the great Keen Leaders selection in the Limerick bumper, although just reading he was 23 BSP tempers my joy a bit haven been paid at 8/1 ISP.

I would say there was some fun in the in running markets on here today

Report Allduckornodinner December 28, 2012 9:24 PM GMT
Great stuff again KL.

Flemenstar got the trip fine, any horse that goes that close over three miles round Leopardstown on tacky ground has to stay. He just isn't as effective if you don't ride him without fear like they have done this far. There's a fair chance he'll win the Grade 1 in Feb as they are sure to be more positive and he probably won't face as much competition for the lead. His stamina isn't exhaustive but he has enough to get home in Irish three milers. They may well be better off if he got touched off again though as it could tempt them to go for the GC when the Ryanair is there for the taking.

I'm a little bit concerned about SDC as he continues to show the lethargy that was on display in the Durkan. He didn't jump nor travel like he can and yet still was only beat less than a length which was mainly owed to his guts and stamina. I'm hoping it's down to the ground and also he probably still isn't at concert pitch. Still you'd imagine he'd travel better within himself during the races before things heat up.

While it was a great race to watch looking at it in the cold light of day you couldn't be too excited over the form. An eleven year old beat a horse in cheek pieces and a horse that never went a yard was on their coat tails. The only horse I can see making the leap for the GC is SDC and I wasn't surprised to see Bobs Worth shorten given the Newbury form. The past three days has really eliminated a host of potential winners of chasings Blue Riband.
Report moneypenny December 28, 2012 9:35 PM GMT
I would think the first four home are legitimate contenders for the Gold cup.
On soft ground at Cheltenham Tidal bay will take some beating.
On better ground the other three all have a decent chance, especially the two Gigginstown horses
Report Allduckornodinner December 28, 2012 9:49 PM GMT
The likes of Tidal Bay and the Lieutenant are fine horses that would go well over 3m2f in Cheltenham but i'd be a bit disappointed if they were gold cup winners (though both are still at least as good as Synchronised was you'd have to say).

At the start of the season there was a lot of talk about new challengers for the crown emerging, especially from this side of the Irish Sea. We are about ten or eleven weeks from Cheltenham now though and the only two to really make their mark are Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti (couldn't have him on my mind either but he did beat Long Run so it's a fair level of form) out of the second season chasers. Flemenstar is a fabulous horse that'll win plenty of good races but he won't stay the GC trip. SDC has to make another leap and as big a fan as I am the current 8/1 is only fair. Mouses horse is the type that could easily place but I see no reason why he'll turn it around with Bobs Worth who was only going away from him in the RSA.

Never been a big fan of Leopardstown at Christmas mainly because of the big less than knowlegable crowds. Couldn't resist the temptation today and while it was good days racing the entry charge of 25 euro was a rip off and you could barely hear the commentary with the chatter of the "fans" during the races.Monksland saved the day and at one stage I thought PC had given up the ghost on him. Does Sir De Champs appear to be regressing?. Didnt jump or travel today and had a really hard race that may leave its mark.
Report Allduckornodinner December 28, 2012 11:17 PM GMT
There were about 1300 more there today officially though with the amount of PP freebies yesterday it wouldn't be a surprise if the real figure was closer as those tickets often aren't properly accounted for.
Report moneypenny December 28, 2012 11:29 PM GMT
If you think back to last season Santry, Sir de champs was far from impressive at Limerick over christmas or when winning at Leopardstown in January. I think he is a Spring horse and if i had to back one for the Gold cup from todays race, he would be the one
Report Santry December 28, 2012 11:50 PM GMT
Tend to agree SDC is the most likely Gold Cup winner in todays race buts thats mainly because flemenstar didnt appear to stay and its hard to see a horse that will be 12 years old winning. He will probably improve a little with better ground in the spring but I think French bred horses do not progress with time in the same way Irish breds do . These Grade 1 races are brutal affairs with no hiding places and SDC had a hard race today and at Punchestown so i'm not certain he will progress.

Queen Mother target for Flemenstar
Last Updated: December 29 2012, 10:59 GMT

Flemenstar is set to have the Queen Mother Champion Chase as his Cheltenham Festival target following his reverse in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown.

After putting previously unbeaten chaser Sir Des Champs to the sword with a brilliant display in the two-and-a-half-mile John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase, Flemenstar was a hot favourite for the feature event of Leopardstown's Christmas meeting, but still had to prove his stamina over three miles.

Having travelled and jumped with his trademark panache under Andrew Lynch, the seven-year-old looked poised to go on and record an impressive victory rounding the home turn, but the complexion of the race quickly changed.

Profiles Peter Casey Flemenstar (IRE)
Flemenstar appeared a weary horse after jumping the final fence and although he stuck to his task well enough to finish third, beaten just three-quarters of a length by Tidal Bay in a barnstorming finish, Casey feels his stable star's stamina limitations were exposed.

The trainer does not feel it would be right to test his charge over an extended three and a quarter miles at Cheltenham in March and with the two-mile-five-furlong Ryanair Chase seemingly of no appeal, he is set to tackle the formidable Sprinter Sacre over the minimum trip instead.

Asked about whether the Gold Cup was still being considered, Casey said: "We'll have to rule that out. He won't get that extra two furlongs.

"You'd think he was going to win coming to the last fence (in the Lexus), he was cruising. He just found nothing after the last 100 yards.

"The Queen Mother, that will be it. The two-mile Champion Chase. That will be the one we'd go for."

Casey is confident that Flemenstar is capable of shaking up the current Champion Chase favourite Sprinter Sacre.

"Our lad is a great jumper and has plenty of speed. He jumped well (on Friday) but every time he landed he was wanting to get going," said the trainer.

"In Cheltenham, if we went for the Queen Mother, he'd have to go there, Andrew would be letting him stride on and we'd give that other lad (Sprinter Sacre) something to think about then!

"That's what we're going to try and do anyway."

Casey will consult Flemenstar's owner before deciding on a next port of call, but is leaning away from another crack at three miles in the Hennessy Gold Cup back at Leopardstown in February.

Casey said: "We'll have to think about where we go next and talk to the owner.

"I don't think we'll go for the Hennessy. There is the Red Mills Chase at Gowran in the middle of February. Whether we'll go down there or not I don't know."
Report workrider December 29, 2012 11:16 AM GMT
who would ever have envisaged that.....wow....
Report lustrumm December 29, 2012 11:41 AM GMT
IMO Lexus day is the purest days racing of the year. The combination of Christmas Atmosphere, all the nadgers having had their day at the races the previous 2 days, usually an English presence and the 2 grade 1 chases sandwiching the 3 Mile Hurdle make it as good a day out as any. My most memorable days racing ever was the day Best Maite came over and won the race back in the day. The single biggest gamble in terms of money exchange I ever saw
Report Santry December 29, 2012 12:05 PM GMT
Good to see that they read the writing on the wall yesterday and are looking at shorter trips for Flemenstar. He always appeared to want to go a stride faster than the field and 2/2.5 miles will be ideal. Looking forward to his next run and could see him beating Sprinter Sacre.
