Congratulations to all those who will represent us with pride. The above odds, with the boxing exception, clearly indicate just what the challenge is and its probably a significant achievement for most to just have qualified.
There is a lot of blood, sweat, tears and cash invested to get us to the starting line, the Irish media are building up unrealistic hopes with wall-to-wall coverage and its easy to anticipate the call for an enquiry when medals fail to materialise. db's above summation is pretty clear. Let's hope there might be a surprise or two in store but we are sadly lacking a world class star in track and field which makes the achievements of Treacy, Coughlan, Sonia etc all the more meritorious. |

On the one hand we have no right to expect any success whatsoever given that we are such a small country, with such limited facilities and with no great tradition of of participating in so many of the sports featured.
On the other hand, it does seem a little disappointing that given that this is our 'home' Olympics, one assumes that here has been an extra drive and increased funding to try and ensure some success, which doesn't look like paying off. |

Agree with most of Royal Academys post but the athletes he mentioned didn`t manage a Gold between them whereas Ronnie Delaney,Pat O`Callaghan and Bob Tisdall all did,also no mention of Irelands greatest ever Olympian Michelle De Bruin with her three gold medals.

I'm not not biting on that particular sprat wildman as I well know your views on the the bould Michelle.
Hard to compare decades-old achievement with the modern Games imo. My trio, in particular Sonia and Coughlan, excelled on the world stage for years and proved how tough the Olympics really are as they just couldn't manage to land the ultimate blow when needed. Something fundamental has changed in many different disciplines and its unlikely we will be competing at the top table for decades such is the dominance of certain nationalities and geographic locations. Any chance Tour twelfth Nick Roche is a lively outsider? Its one sport than can be unpredictable. |

No matter how much money or training you do you cant make a silk purse out of a sow.s ear..exceep to say well done to those irish competitors who quilifed..the Reality is may be a brooze in the mens boxer team and i hope a gold for Katie. I WILL cheer louder then any irishmen if im wrong.

Katie Taylor faces tough route for London Gold
Ireland's Katie Taylor faces a tough draw ahead of her quest for gold at the London Olympics. The four-time world champion is set to meet old nemesis Queen Underwood as early as the quarter-final stages, should both boxers progress to the last eight. And things do not get much easier for the Bray native as Britain's Natasha Jonas or China's Cheng Dong await in the semi-final stage. Taylor's father and coach, Peter, said its a great draw and she wants to show the world that she can beat the best. There was good news for Belfast boxers Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon, who received byes into the last-16. John Joe Nevin will box tomorrow against a Danish opponent in the round of 32. Does anyone know why 32 boxers cannot compete in each weight division?
Of the 10 different divisions in the men's boxing, 3 have 26 boxers, 2 have 16 boxers (the heavy & super-heavy) and the other 5 divisions have 28 boxers. Why not have 32 boxers in each division so that more boxers (such as Joe Ward) will have the chance to compete? Also it means that some boxers won't be at a disadvantage by virtue of having to fight an extra bout than some others? |

I know very little about our athletes only getting into it the last couple of days. A four times world champion, be disappointing if Katie Taylor does not get Gold. Joe Ward probably would have been are best hope of the men boxers but he got rode in Turkey.
Anyone know much about this Michael Conlon, was only bet by a point by Andy Selby in the World championships has been quoted as one of our biggest darkhorses. |

It's counted on punches not rounds. The other lad looked busy in the 3rd but wasn't landing. Boxers off to great start. O

i felt nolan got very tired in the last round and became a little ragged ...lets not forget it was his first ever fight at the games ....he would have been on edge going into the last knowing he only had to stand up to win...he decided to do the sugar ray bit an nearly payed the price......over all a good win , and with that experience under his belt he'll grow in confidence....
