The young lad is clocking up a catalogue of mistakes. He wouldn't lace the boots of Murtagh

Imperial Monarch finish 8th and had a completely clear passage for the final 2f+ while over 50% of the horses on the inner were killed, too many q's left to answer to say he was an unlucky loser.Irish Derby possible for sure.

He may be clocking up a catalogue of mistakes but he is also clocking up a catalogue of G1 wins. 2 Irish 2000 guineas, 1 english 2000 guineas & 1 english derby is unbelievable at this stage of his career, gary carroll and ben curtis must be wondering where time flies, I rated both above O'Brien when they shared the apprentice title.

Just because Joseph rides better horses doesn't make him a better jockey. Curtis and Carroll, given the same opportunities would do  just as well.

We don`t know that for sure, would they have his temperment would they lose the head, who knows.
It is ridiculous to blame Joseph O`Brien for the French Derby debacle.

I think Curtis/Carroll would have done just as well to be honest, they were and are both clearly talented. Carroll rode a fine race to win the Ebor for Willie Mullins in his apprentice year I remember.
Its interesting the way the cookie crumbles all the same, Joseph is getting the horse racing equivalent of an education at Harvard with this type of experince while the other two have barely ridden in a G1.

A calalogue of mistakes...I can name one in St Nicholas Abbey and thats pretty much it. Can't believe you blame him for today and yet praise Murtagh in the same sentence. Was Murtagh not riding today in the same race??

Murtagh was not liked at Ballydoyle hence his complete falling out with everyone at the place. Fell out with Oxx in his late twenties. Compare Joseph to Murtagh at both ages and Joseph is a far more well rounded young man and rider.

He is still a teenager!

Look at Frank Spencer and how he rode for team Coolmore in his stint there.

I agree with the Curtis Carroll comment to a certain extent. These lads are very good but Curtis has completely fallen off the map of late.

Are you sure the St Nicholas Abbey ride was a mistake,he was being prepared for the Coronation Cup and they reaped their dividend yesterday.

Who knows but they all fell out big time in the end.

Johnny said he would ride for them again. 2 years later hasn't ridden even once for Aidan.

RicksonG you hate O Brien, give me your alternative Jockey??. Easy to be critical

Cool

Cool

Whatever it was he didn't ride work for 6 months according to a source on this forum while still being stable Jockey it was very serious.

Owners stepped in and said we pay you till the end of the year but your banned from the yard and you keep shut until the end of the season.

Sounds what like happened reading in between the lines.

Not you RicksonG but the vile abuse this young man is getting is completely out of order.

Everyone can have an opinion and that is fair enough but every single ride is being torn to shreds that he losses on. Its incredible. Just won 5 Group 1's already this year?? if not more.

People say he is riding Steering Jobs but since he has got St Nicholas Abbey the horse has completely turned around inside out.

He has done everything with Camelot, teached him and nurtured him into the horse he is but sure look "its aidan" or "its the bloodstock" or its everything but him.

You could say the same with Maybe even, even if she has yet to fulfil her potential at 3.

Ruby I think that twas said at some stage last year that Maybe was ahead of everything physically, like that she was the 3yr old in with the younger 2yr olds, if you get what I mean.
I wouldn't take any notice of what happened to Joseph in France today, that has happened to them all (including Lester) over there at some point in time, and he is a quick learner, with a super tutor.
The only negative for me is that Imperial got a pretty hard race in attempting to get back into it,(wasn't beaten far) and I'd say they might have preferred if Joseph stayed in behind as there is always another day. This is a good horse and if Camelot bypasses the Irish Derby well he's the one.

By:

When: 04 Jun 12 21:59
Are you blaming him for the ride or the overweight.
Johnny Murtagh was leaking information,he has always had some heavy punters around him,he seems to have brought these punters with him to the Halford stable this year.
By:
The Gotchee
When: 04 Jun 12 22:12
I am not blaming him for anything, I am just stating a fact. A race over 1 mile, one pound equates to half a length. Draw your own conclusions. Its not fair on punters.
By:
wildmanfromborneo

Presumably the punters knew he was carrying the overweight and if they didn`t they are beyond help.

It was nothing to do with Babs,it was a combination of things one of them was the leakage, read the thread on the Ballydoyle gambles.
It has to be significant that wherever Murtagh goes the gambling follows, this is not unusual and has happened down the years with lots of jockeys but Coolmore have taken to gambling and coupled with his not riding out enough spelt the death knell for Murtagh.

The emergence of a certain JPOB was a factor in Murtaghs departure,if you remember back he (JPOB) was actually getting some cherry rides and Murtagh was still supposed to be the main man,Johnny wouldn't be one for keeping his trap shut.

Yourself and silvergreaser should focus on a different jockey next week and hang him after every ride.........maybe one of the more established lads.

Gant I don't have very strong views on the ability of jockeys as I generally believe if the jockey is capable and the horse is good enough then the best horse will win nearly everytime.
Jockeys do make mistakes from time to time and big fields will always require a certain element of luck, but when I'm having a bet who's on the horses back never influences my decision, its horse ability everytime.

I do have a major problem with how and why the weights for conditions and maiden races were raised just as a certain Joseph had inherited the top job at Ballydoyle it was cynical as it was corrupt.

As things currently stand and with the regular occurences of overweight been put up by Joseph it won't be long before he'll be riding exclusively in Irish group races only, unless of course a rather substantial brown envelope finds its way into the hands of some unscrupulous official in Britain and France and they decide to raise the weights of their condition races also?, types of races where doing the correct weight was never a problem for any current or aspiring flat jockey in fact its a piece of p!ss, unless of course you're Joseph O'Brien whose powerful backing had the goalposts moved almost at a whim.

Take a trip down to the racing academy and you will be put firmly in your box about the weight issue.
The welfare of these jockeys coming through comes first...........kids are bigger nowadays.

Aubrey Brabazon won a Classic in the forties carrying a pound overweight.
Silvergreaser persists with this nonsense that the weight rise was brought in for Joseph O`Brien,it wasn`t that was being discussed five years ago.GANT007 has it right in the post above.
By:

Wildman there was a stipulation left in by one Adrian McGoldrick (Turf Club Doctor) after they had succeeded in upping the minimum weight from 7st12? to 8st4 in 2006, now I don't know about you or gant but if jockeys can still ride at 8st4 then why would there be a problem with a flat jockey riding at 9st?.

I suppose it might also have escaped your attention, that one Joseph O'Brien was 13 in 2006 and well on his way to been groomed as a flat jockey, and I'm sure Aiden and Anne-marie were blissfully aware that Joseph would always have a problem controlling his weight even at the age 13 it would have become pretty evident, hence the little stipulation added in during the last weight review.

Now lets see, this stipulation has lay dormant for all of 6 years and all of a sudden when Joseph was rushed to the head of affairs as Coolmores No 1 jockey the stipulation conveniently became reality?, a coincidence or what?.

No other major racing nation had any problems regarding the current weights for condition races and maidens and nobody has been huffing and puffing trying to blow their houses down for change either apart from an almost cynical plea from the corrupt Irish racing regulators.
You can btw still ride in Britain at 7st12?.

I think most of these changes will become reality by the 1st of July? which will help enormously "ONE INDIVIDUAL" to avoid putting up overweight for another few years at least.
It stinks and you know it!.
By:

Joseph to my knowledge never attended R.A.C.E.........Why? Whether he is right or wrong silvergreaser has a point. As a jockey the young lad has the most important job in Irish Racing and naturally enough his riding is going to be brought under the microscope. At this point in time Coolmore have an exceptional group of horses and he is winning races on steering jobs and armchair rides call them what you like but he is still only an average jockey. Riding overweight is avoidable. If he cant do the weight he should be replaced. You just cant keep making excuses for mediocrity.
By:
GANT007
When: 08 Jun 12 19:33
Silvergreaser reckons Denis Brosnan will sort out the weights to benefit JO'B in return for stallion nominations......cuckoo.
Mediocrity is right awful outfit winning all those group 1 races and chances are they will bag a few more.......in sport you can only beat what is in front of you.
By:
silvergreaser
When: 08 Jun 12 20:23
Ah c'mon gant you don't have to agree with me or even like me for that matter but even the most tunnel visioned of the Coolmore fan boys would be hard pressed to suggest nothing untoward was taking place here?.

Nobody even heard about these proposed changes until just before the flat season proper was about to start, kept that very close to their chests didn't they?.
Even the press seemed to be taken by surprise?.

Now it has to be said Dr Aidrian McGoldrick has done an excellent job as regards the welfare of jockeys in the past not just getting the weights for handicaps raised but other things like diet, bone structure etc, but wasn't it said that "dehydration" was the main reason why these new and sudden weight changes were introduced?, then why then did HRI/Turf Club ignore the other stipulation that McGoldrick recommended, the lowering of the apprentice claim from 10lbs to 7lbs?.

McGoldrick was on record saying that the dehydration problem mostly effected apprentices rather than the more senior jockeys, so if it was all about health problems as HRI claim then why wasn't this change introduced instead of introducing weight changes where health was never an issue?.

How convenient then that the changes introduced would mean virtually no horse will carry any less than 9st for maidens and conditions races, a tremendous help to an individual who had a major problem doing 8st12 last flat season and currently is having a major problem even doing 9st.
No one individual should be bigger than horse racing!.
