Harswell Angel, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 3.00 Newmarket (4 PLACES)
Harswell Angel didn't look straightforward when winning a Redcar novice (6f, good) on his third start last season but he still did well to win in the circumstances considering his jockey had been unable to ride him out properly as he struggled to keep the gelding from hanging left into his main rival. However, there didn't appear any fluke about his win as he had travelled better than the 2-7 shot he defeated, and that rival had previously run well behind useful sorts in a couple of Haydock novice races. Of Harswell Angel's two runs since, he didn't appear to handle the heavy ground on his final 2YO start at Doncaster, but he made a satisfactory reappearance at Southwell, when the race perhaps didn't pan out ideally but kept on okay for 4th place. Kevin Stott, who was aboard last time, retains the ride and interesting to see what Harswell Angel can do back on turf now that's he hopefully a bit more mature. Twirler, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 7.30 Lingfield (4 PLACES) Twirler, like many from her yard, has been in good form this year, and although she produced a lesser effort when upped in class last time over this C&D, she appeared to have an excuse having had plenty of use made of her from the widest draw. She's not drawn as wide this time so hopefully can be a frame contender at least if running her race more efficiently on this occasion. |
|
By:
Harswell Angel, a northern challenger pitched into a 3YO handicap at the Craven meeting, on the face of it didn't prove up to it, but he was keen under restraint on this step back up in trip to 7f, in a contest that produced a relatively slow overall time and not much got into it from off the pace, so whilst there was no immediate promise here, he may prove better suited to a more strongly-run contest back over 6f, and will obviously find easier opportunities back up north.
Twirler, who did too much on the sharp-end last time out, on this occasion was held-up in a race where the first two dominated throughout. 2026 Running P/L: +63.15 pts |

Fashionelle, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 6.30 Southwell
Fashionelle has been a selection before on the threads. There are a couple of obvious negatives to her chance this evening as she's running in a higher grade than she needs to be in and an inexperienced apprentice takes the ride, but she should be sharper for her recent return to action at Wolverhampton, with her usual cheekpieces now reapplied, and the return to this venue is probably a plus having run well on all four of her tries here on the Tapeta, making the frame on three of those occasions. Her only win on the Flat to date came in a weak 9.5f fillies' novice at Wolverhampton when trained by Fergal O'Brien, but she's out of a dual two-mile winner on the AW and has shown enough over trips in excess of 12f to suggest she can bag a win in a modest staying handicap at some point. |

Tbh, I've not heard of the jockey before who's only had the six rides, but I've had a look back at the one he finished second on and he looked tidy enough under a hands and heels push-out. |

The one Trusty referred to was a selection for a competition, but gone over a month without a winner for this ![]() And this evening's two picks at Newcastle are both drawn low so I'm hoping it's not stands-rail bias night there ![]() |

2026 Running P/L: +61.15 pts
Blazing Sun, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 8.00 Newcastle (4 PLACES) Blazing Sun could only finish in mid-division last time at Southwell, but is of interest back at Newcastle where he has won three times and placed on a further six occasions from just ten starts at the Gosforth Park venue, his latest win coming off a one pound higher mark over tonight's 7f trip in September. He finished second of seven on his latest visit here last month to one who was making it 4-5 over C&D, and if back in that sort of form he should have an each-way chance this evening, provided his low draw doesn't turn out to be a negative. Ridgemaster, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 8.30 Newcastle (4 PLACES) Ridgemaster's three handicap starts for Hugo Palmer were over trips ranging from 12.5f to 17f, finishing no better than in ninth place, but a marked drop in trip to 7f and a switch to this venue saw him defeat 12 rivals and win at odds of 66-1 on his stable debut, and there didn't appear any fluke about it, with the third and fourth having won since. He failed to build on that win back here in January when up in grade, finishing only 8th of 11 and beaten 11 lengths, but that was a strong race for the level with solid course performers Lord Capulet, Goldmoyne and Concert Boy occupying the first three places. Ridgemaster's win came off a three-month break (and having been with his current yard for seven weeks, having been sold for 4,000 gns at the end of October), so hopefully a similar break since his last run won't be an issue regarding fitness, while this first try at a mile here shouldn't hold any stamina fears considering how his previous yard had campaigned him once handicapped. He too has a low draw and it remains to be seen how that pans out. |

As it turned out both selections were on a good part of the track but alas neither were able to take advantage.
Blazing Son had a lovely position tracking the eventual winner Lord Capulet but unlike that rival wasn't in the form to enhance his good course record. I suppose Ridgemaster would have had some residual fitness from having been trained and raced for Hugo Palmer when winning off a three-month break here in December over the 7f trip, but on this occasion back from a similar break for his current yard and tried over the mile trip, appeared to need the run, racing prominently on what appeared a decent pace before folding from over a furlong out. 2026 Running P/L: +57.15 pts |

What is going on with posts being removed for no apparent reason?
Crocodile Power, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 3.52 Catterick Nakatomi, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 5.00 Catterick |
|
By:
Crocodile Power is just an each-way play at the prices. He has work to do to reverse recent C&D form with both E' Spark (with whom he has a 5lb pull for 5L) and Vince Le Prince (1lb pull for 3.5L), but he was returning from a 4-month break and shaped as though the run might just have been needed, having had to use up some gas to get across to lead from a wide draw before giving way to the first two from over a furlong out.
Like E' Spark, he may not want the ground to dry out too much, and he's yet to win at 7f on turf even though he has won at the trip three times on the all-weather including at Newcastle, but he has a lower draw to work from this time and perhaps can see his race out better if ridden with a tad more restraint. |
|
By:
Nakatomi is another with work to do to reverse recent course form, in his case with Free Pic and Stellarmasterpiece. The selection has an uninspring profile being officially rated just 44 and having made the frame just once from seventeen starts, but he didn't look an entirely hopeless case last time over the 12f trip having appeared to have done plenty out in front, and although he did give way over a furlong out, he only gradually faded to be beaten just under 6L.
He's up 2f in trip here so will need to run his race more efficiently, with a visor replacing blinkers, but a pull in the weights with the winner can help and hopefully he can at least hang on for a place if ridden forward again. |
|
By:
Another couple of duds, unfortunately.
I thought there was reason to think Crocodile Power could get closer to the two who had finished in front of him last time over C&D, but whereas those old rivals were strong in the betting and again occupied the first two positions, the selection, who was weak in the betting all day, folded tamely over a furlong out. Nakatomi didn't build on a mildly encouraging effort last time, upped further in trip today. 2026 Running P/L: +53.15 pts |

You always put up a reason for your selections, unlike others
|

By:
I was interested to read what Alan Potts once said, that when he was betting full-time, he would divulge his selections with reasoning to a few select friends, however, if he found after doing his write-up that he hadn't convinced himself about the intended selection, then he wouldn't send the write-up, nor back the horse himself!
Hugh Taylor once said that he doesn't care what people are tipping, he's more interested in their reasoning. However, each to their own I guess, the scientists tell us "gut feeling" is a scientifically validated phenomena, often called intuition. It is not mystical, but rather the brain's rapid, subconscious processing of patterns and past experiences. |

Unique Journey, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 7.15 Naas (4 PLACES)
Unique Journey was a big improver last year, having started the campaign rated 71 and finishing it rated 98, and his reappearance run at the Curragh (6f, heavy) suggested he might not have reached his ceiling just yet, finishing second having conceded 18lb to one who was well-punted, with a couple of subsequent Curragh handicap winners in behind. However, a step up to Listed class last time at Cork (6f, soft) proved beyond him, finishing a comfortably-held 4th, and that form leaves him with over 2L to make up on King Cuan. The RPR he got for that latest effort was some way below the triple-digit one for his seasonal return, so perhaps he didn't give his true running for whatever reason. Whatever, he still has to prove he's up to this Listed level, but I'm going to take a chance at the prices, dropped back in trip to 5f with blinkers tried. He has the highest draw so it remains to be seen how that pans out. |

Oh Cecilia, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 3.05 Cork
Oh Cecilia has been gone well in three runs on soft / heavy ground since joining Ken Condon, winning at Naas and Cork and in between faring best of the 3YOs when finishing 5th of 16 in a Curragh handicap. The 10lb rise in the ratings for winning a rated race last time here over 5f still leaves her with enough to find on this step up in class to Listed company, but she did seem to win with plenty in hand and perhaps her effort can be marked up further still having raced solo down the centre, considering the winner of the Listed race on the card bolted home towards the stands' side rail. She seems to be improving for her current yard and for encountering deeper terrain so hopefully can at least press for some black type. |

2026 Running P/L: +53.75 pts
O Fortuna, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 3.40 Beverley (4 PLACES) The negatives for O Fortuna's chance aren't too difficult to spot here having finished down the field last time at Newcastle (stumbled start and drawn high on a night when racing stands-side might not have been ideal), and racing today in a higher grade than he needs to be in, with a potentially difficult draw to overcome. However, he had made an encouraging start to his campaign when not beaten far into 4th at Catterick (5f, good) last month, where his effort could probably be marked up having been drawn widest and been obliged to race on the outer. The second and third have won since, and the winner would have gone closer returned to Catterick last time but for being denied a clear run. The selection can race off a mark 3lb lower than for his Catterick effort and a tongue-tie is given a go. |

2026 Running P/L: +51.75 pts
She's A Gift, 1pt EW @ 28-1, 2.03 Naas (5 PLACES) She's A Gift was only rated 39 before her latest start at Dundalk and was presumably running in a maiden at that venue due to be being unable to get into handicaps, however, she didn't look a hopeless case there having led some much higher-rated rivals until inside the final furlong before fading to finish 7th of the nine runners and beaten 6L. The handicapper has put her mark up 10lb for that, she has a potentially tricky draw here and has to show more than she did on her seven previous attempts on turf which all came in maiden races, but a chance is taken at the odds than she can build on that latest effort now running in a handicap on grass. Royal Zabeel, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 2.20 Ascot (6 PLACES) It did look yesterday at Ascot that racing towards the stands' side was an advantage so if that apparent track bias plays out the same today then Royal Zabeel's draw in ten is potentially bad news, but I'm going to take a chance on him at the odds as I thought he ran quite well at Musselburgh last month on his second start of the year, having finished last on his reappearance at Riyadh when running for big money. He finished two places behind one of today's rivals Golden Mind last time, but I thought his effort could be marked up as he perhaps got racing soon enough with the prolific Goldmoyne, the pair two or three lengths clear into the final furlong before being reeled in inside the final 100 yards. The winner, 6th and 8th have won since. The selection, who won a Listed race at Southwell in November, has a 7lb lower mark on the grass than he does on the all-weather so it will be interesting to see how he take's to Ascot's straight track. The return to quicker ground looks a positive and Jason Watson is 2-3 on the gelding. Desert Champion, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 4.25 Lingfield Desert Champion has yet to win for his current yard but his second at Newcastle in November suggested that he should be up to winning races for them, for all that form could have worked out better, and his reappearance run at Redcar last week was probably better than his finishing position of 7th suggested, having gone sharply left to race far side on a day when that tactic didn't look any particular advantage, but it was only inside the final 100 yards that he was headed. He's up in class here and his low draw could be problematic with other potential pace influences to contend with, but he's well down the weights and I suspect there's a bigger effort in him at some point. O Fortuna, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 4.35 Nottingham O Fortuna was a selection on Monday at Beverley for the reasons given above. He finished last of the 14 runners and beaten nearly 15L so it takes a leap of faith to support him again so soon, however, he was dropped in from his wide draw in a contest where being drawn low and racing prominently was no bad thing, so he's given another chance here on hopefully what will be a more level playing field. The tongue-tie he wore for the first time on Monday is quickly discarded and cheekpieces are given a try. |
