RIP Captain, just seen his profile floating away in the ethernet.

A not unexpected demise Glasgow. Seems he could not rein it in.
Speaking of Captains, how about Pugwash ? A staple of 70s kids tv. More urban myths about the characters names in that series than any other i reckon. All aboard the Black Pig me hearties ! |

60s 70s was fishing and football mad as a nipper ,watching out of town on the telly hoping there would be a fishing slot in there somewhere .bunking in over the wall at Millwall one week and Charlton the next .
smashing windows in old derelict warehouses or factorys throwing stones . about a dozen of us nippers got into an egg factory one Sunday afternoon big boxes of eggs 144 eggs in or a gross as they used to be, a dozen bored kids with time on their hands and untold eggs and no adults to spoil the fun 6 a side what could go wrong .........absolute carnage ! |

Arthur daly and basil fawty the two greatest characters on television
Millwall or Charlton nowadays foyles ? |
|
By:
![]() Tudor crisps factory (old dwelling house converted ) going on fire. Watching it ( nothing to do with it ) then cottoning on next day that there might be salvage/would be unburnt crisps. And there was. Several boxes at a time were salvaged. They lasted for weeks. As far as I can remember none were seriously smoke damaged. My old man asked, with a grim expression, where I had got them, and accepted eventually that “ the firemen told us it would be o.k.”. . |

Wash your mouth out, Jimnast
Foyles is Millwall, of course 2 other characters, Delboy and Bobbie Box? |
|
By:
haven't gone to a footy match for decades tbh I do look out for the Millwall and Charlton results though .by the way z cars is on talking pictures tv now and every day at 12 . 60s - 70s gritty nostalgia !
|
|
By:
Apologies, Jimnast
I thought Foyles was diehard Millwall |
|
By:
Was Jim Montgomery not one of ( I think ) three goalkeepers in a season who scored a goal direct from a kick out? Like the long throw in I wonder when that play will be popular again?
|
|
By:
Honcho, I think they must have been wind assisted to travel something like 80 plus yards as well as goalkeeping incompetence involved
Some of the grounds back then had "open" ends or sides but top flight clubs now have more enclosed grounds with bigger stands that might stop the wind being as much a factor... This is only a guess by me, might be way off the mark |

You are probably right but what I do remember is that the ground was very firm for one of them. I’m sure Alex Stepney was one victim. I seem to remember his visible anguish at making such a blunder/being caught out so amateurishly. Pat Jennings comes to mind as another scorer. Memory can get things wrong though.
|
|
By:
Don’t remember Jim Montgomery doing that the only one I remember is pat jennings for spurs against united at old Trafford in the charity shield.
Jim Montgomery won the fa cup for Sunderland in 73 |

No worries reg like foyles I haven’t been for a long time ,never been to Charlton but as united spent a season in the then division 2 I did go to millwall once.
|

By:
Thanks jimnast.
Macaroni and cheese was our hated school dinner. Disgusting it was. All runny and watery. I’m sure it was recycled pig swill. Looking back most of the meals were terrific but they interfered with fitty in the playground. I remember we got a new boss dinner lady. God she was scary, fierce and hostile in equal measure. You only messed with her once. Her spoonbanging on tables suggested that kids heads might be equally clattered! ![]() |

Your welcome loyal
Thinking back to the 74 season the 3 main grounds used for fa cup semi finals were all 2nd division grounds |
|
By:
I too went Charlton home games , in the 70,s they went thru a phase of playing on Friday nights

That terrace at the original Valley seemed to reach the sky String, great old ground.
Honcho, Pat Jennings scored that goal against Man Utd in the 1967 Charity shield. Jimmy Montgomery never scored a goal as far as i can tell. Incidentally Alex Stepney actually scored twice for Man Utd (both penalties) in the 73/74 season and we all know what happened at the end of that season ! |
|
By:
Did he indeed. Made one stupendous save against Eusebio I remember. Thanks.
|
|
By:
Dixie it was embarrassing at one stage of the season Stepney was leading scorer he missed one against wolves in a goalless draw they ended up relegated only those who went that season knew how bad they were, towards the end of the season they beat Everton 3 0 at old Trafford they a week later needed both points to give them a chance of staying up Everton won 1 0 it was then out of united hands.

Depends how you classify what is and isn't punk i reckon String.
New Rose by The Damned is credited as the first UK punk single in 1976. In the USA it's generally accepted that The Ramones were the first true punk band, great times. |

I remember going to a football club dance just as punk had hit the tv screens. A young girl came all punked up make up and hair wise but simply wore a black bin bag with holes cut for her arms, and, a name tag on the front - “Luscious Lil”. Terrific originality creating quite a stir and good natured humour. Sure it was around Dec’73 but the dates mentioned in here make me doubt that now. Must have been ‘74?

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, The Time Tunnel, The Banana Splits and The Arabian Knights "size of an elephant" Marbles and conkers. Jim'll Fix It
(my friend's sister was in it). The Cup Final of 78? Arsenal 3 Man Utd 2 watched at said friend's house. Cycling everywhere. Being on holiday in Scotland during WC78 as a 12yo and watching the footie with the hotel chefs. Italy v France iirc. Football stickers and the football cards that had chewing gum in. Crappy Youth Clubs. Being the only kid in Secondary school in years 1-3 who was allowed out at lunch (because my mum wrote a note saying I could get better value in town). I would buy a whole swiss roll Switching from Showaddywaddy to Blondie ![]() |
