One way of looking at it Honcho. Another is why Piggott Eddery Fallon got on some really good horses. Of course they made mistakes but it's how few you make.

Dictated by the draw today somewhat, unless you want to be hung out wide either needed to push forward behind the pace, or hook it to the back. Obviously opted for the latter, presumably with the consent of other stakeholders.
Almost every run I can recall he has more running left at the line, especially this season. |

dont think he,s had anything left in his 2 races and royal ascot,he,s a speed horse and in all them runs he,s used his speed to recover from been in a poor track position, just to get himself competitive

Rosallion dropped in from stall 12 had to manoeuvre around the better placed winner stall 6 to get a run. Swap the draws different result

No matter how it lost it will never be seeing any of my money. Perennial loser. We see them from time to time and with thousands of other horses and races to engage with avoiding/ignoring/disregarding him is no disadvantage.

IMO Rosallion is the best miler in Europe and yet hasnt won a race yet this season. Should be the winner of the Lockinge ,Sussex and Moulin. Simply given too much to do in all by the rider! If the owner doesnt change Rosallions trainer then the trainer needs to change the jockey before he does!

obaid has been remarkably patient this year imo
surely cant be a big price rosallion's next run is for k burke |

To correct myself. Maybe not the Lockinge as it was the horses first run back! The Queen Anne at R.Ascot was the race he should have won too!

The draw last twice hasn’t helped the colt. No winner has come from stall 10 or higher going back to 2011 on France galop. Before that it was trend. Since ‘74 (51 runnings) 26 3 yr olds have won the race, the rest being4 and 5 year olds. Missed that one today on that one stat. |

I thought Hannon junior stated The Moulin race was unlikely as it came too soon, and the draw could be an issue. But, the horse would zip round an American track like scalextric.

One of the issues is that trainers seem to be obsessed with horses needing to be held up. If you are a miler there is not a lot of time to make up ground in most G1 races. Ascot and Newbury, yes you could/should be able to bide your time on a straight mile and get it right. At Goodwood, York and Longchamp, you need to be very good indeed. Levey is ok, but not top class. I wonder sometimes, having been beaten the same way, why they don't try something different. Too late now I suspect. There is no reason to think that hitting the front at the 1f marker would cause it to run less well.

Reminds me of Raven's Pass a bit. Of course Fortune eventually worked out how to ride him but Dettori + another 2F produced his best (and final) performance.

agree DG, unless a horse is a bad puller, the fastest horse from A to B wins the race, the 'held up, likes to pass horses' nonsense is a myth, a horse doesn't know if he's behind 10 or 1. The tactics/jockeyship have cost this horse badly this season.
|
|
By:
That's not true, one of the best horses we've ever seen and my fav of all time love passing horses. Frankel didn't need to at all. STS loved a scrap. Was Giant's Causeway the same as Rock or Kingman. Obviously not. But at this level jockeys do make a difference. The very best (horse and/or Jockey) overcome adversity, and still usually get it done.
|
|
By:
There are not too many jockeys in that tier. In my time on the flat, Dettori, Moore when fit, JM, Murphy, Kinane, Cauthen, Eddery, Carson. Buick sometimes but a little more vulnerable to those. I only caught the very tail end of Piggott, Royal Academy et al, but everybody says he was brilliant. Even the top tier can mess it up now and again, Kinane on Rock in America for example.

Cider, I agree with nearly all you say there. StS started off outpaced (slightly) over 1m in the 2000 then came through, which may have become his modus operandi by default. I am sure there are some horses who positively don't like to hit the front too early. Just as sure that there are not too may jockeys capable of nursing a good horse to the front 2f out and getting home. But, I do also think that a disproportionate number of horses lose races they should have won by coming too late, rather than too early. I have no skin in the game with this Hannon horse. I think he is over-rated by his trainer. But I do query why they continue with tactics that their chosen jockey simply cannot execute successfully. Good luck chap.

My take is that STS was pretty lazy by default so needed to be engaged to get the best out of him. These are extremes (worldy horses) as we all know about them but he could never have been ridden like Frankel or Montjeu to get the best out of him. Essentially I don't think it can be written off that all horses are the same, some need switching off, others are grinders. They are pack animals and not homogenous.
Rosallion isn't a superstar but is good enough to win an all age g1. Connections have got it in their heads that he is push button, like a Rock or Kingman. Perhaps he shows them that at home and that's why they think he can get away with giving away ground. Personally I don't think it was a terrible ride as they clearly decided to take their medicine from the car park draw, and drop right out. SL is a perfectly capable jockey but isn't top tier like those I listed, perhaps most of them would have pulled off today's tactics. For me (I've repeated this a few times!) he would be pretty lethal over 10f with a bit more time to get into the race, but they have it in their heads that he is very quick, so stepping up seems very unlikely. |
