Lunchtime News headline:  "The judge commented that the lifelines revealed by the Sycamore Gap tree were more than two hundred, and, as it was common knowledge that a year's life of a tree was equal to seven of a human that both of the vile criminals stood before this court should go down for 1,400 years each, without the possibility of parole, this, and only this will assuage the blood lust of the fruitcake public"!

You must be thicker than the felled tree Honcho, it obviously wasnt " just a tree " as you keep repeating. What about war graves ? I suppose they are just a slab of concrete with your logic.

Heres hoping they get at least a yr or two to reflect on their mindless vandalism.

"i believe becos of the furore jail is a 1.01"   Brave call Rico.     Several weeks ago.  At the end of the trial Judge Mrs Justice Lambert said the two men should be prepared for "lengthy" custodial sentences

I wouldn't lock them up personally if they showed remorse as there isn't enough prison space.  A lengthy suspended sentence and a nighttime curfew until they complete 700 hours of community service.

I'd rather anti social morons gave something back in very lengthy community service stints, than remain anti social morons at taxpayers' expense in prison

you've got to be kidding clydebank  they haven't shown any remorse and any other morons have to be shown what awaits , a lengthy prison sentence.

there's big chance of suicide/s imo  and maybe in prison so there might not be too lengthy expense.

I'm also a pragmatist.  There's only so much prison space because the government hasn't the money.

In a statement read to the court, National Trust general manager Andrew Poad said the "iconic tree" could "never be replaced".

He said it belonged to the people and was a "totemic symbol for many", adding it was a destination to visit and a place to make memories.

Mr Poad said it was a "place of sanctuary" and a "calming reflective" spot people would visit year after year.

The outpouring of love and emotion was "unprecedented" with the "overwhelming sense of loss and confusion" felt across the world, he said. The reason for the "beautiful tree" being felled was "beyond comprehension".

Mr Poad also said the "mindless destruction" now dominated the work of the National Trust in the area.

How much money the public sector will raise from taxes and other sources of revenue?

In 2024-25, we expect it to raise £1,141.2 billion, equivalent to around £40,000 per household or 39.7 per cent of national income.

The 'government' has the money. It just chooses to waste it.

They destroyed a cultural and historical British tree.
However I would be happy to let them go down to the south coast with the chainsaw to cut some rubber to make amends.

Quite rightly pointed out, they’d not have the balls to attack anything that can fight back.

You've got government debt, interest payments and government assets and a whole raft of other considerations.  A financial audit would reach 100s of pages of details not a meaningless one liner, so that one liner means next to nothing.  It's impossible to measure how much money is wasted.  You don't know.  I don't know.  No one knows.  It's also impossible not to waste money.  But I'd be amazed if (relatively) far more money wasn't wasted in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s when the level of equality and quality of life was much better for 90% of the population.  I think it's fairly obvious the government doesn't have the resources it had 20 30 40 50 years ago.

I’m surprised at your attitude to outright thuggery. We all know that trees are important for life. I’ve not heard the moral outrage that has got you on the rampage today Grin

The thing is we re living in a country where there IS a lack of respect for things that aren’t our own. The tree didn’t ask for it and they went out of their way to do this.
- Question is why? For 15 minutes of fame?

We’re creating sick fame obsessed society and one where nothing is out of bounds, you have the oil lot spraying public buildings, attacking art, causing damage in shops etc…

The lot that tore down the statue in Bristol because they want to wipe out history, whilst the police stood and watched. None were punished for this act of vandalism.

Will Smith slaps someone on stage without a charge.

Are you sure that we should be sending out such messages of do what you want to or who whatever you want to our youth?

I’ve quoted him before to the laughs, but the guy had a way of saying things.

“Check out the real situation
Nation war against nation
Where did it all begin?
When will it end?
Well, it seems like, total destruction the only solution
And there ain't no use no one can stop them now
Ain't no use, nobody can stop them now

Give them an inch, they take a yard
Give them a yard, they take a mile….”

Real Situation - Bob Marley.

And as the Manic Street Preachers sung, “If you tolerate this, then your children will next.”

One day it’s a tree, the next it’s something that you own or worse - you or a loved one.

I know that we collect illegal immigrants from the channel and give them free everything. I know that we paid another country £billions to rent back our own islands. I know that we pay for interpreters for foreign people that have lived in the UK for decades. Today the Labour gvnt announced giving nearly £4k to well off people to subsidise a leccy car purchase. HS2. I could be here until next week listing out the money that is palpably wasted. Instead of spending money on worthwhile necessities such as prison spaces and reservoirs. You don't have to look very hard for the wasting of taxpayer cash.

We've got an ageing population, dealing with climate change, years of under investment in infrastructure, interest payments and (too many refugees), all sucking money out of the public purse.  So the demands on government are much greater.  But over the last 50 years GDP per capita has vastly increased, so if we'd been living in an equally equitable country than we used to, I imagine that that increase would be easily enough cash to meet those expenses.  But it isn't because that increase is being hoarded by the super wealthy.

Things can always be improved on, it doesn't excuse palpably/deliberately frittered away cash. If the climate is changing, the UK can do f u c k all about it. Whether that is directly caused by emissions, or not. And I've not even touched on the covid neurosis.

'You blamed drink, saying you drank a bottle of whisky after a tough day and everything was a blur'
Referring to a pre-sentence report, the judge says Carruthers claimed he had “no idea why he carried out the crime and had no explanation”. She added: “You blamed drink, saying you drank a bottle of whisky after a tough day and everything was a blur.”

'The offence involved a high degree of planning and preparation'
Mrs Justice Lambert: “The offence involved a high degree of planning and preparation. The venture required thought and preparation. You had to work out how you were going to get to the three and had to ensure you had the correct equipment with you.

"It took effort, it involved a round trip of some hours, travelling at night during Storm Agnes."

Elsewhere, not one single complaint about the really significant issue which is the significant damage done to a historical artefact of huge status, which still has a very useful function.  The wall.

Graham and Carruthers are jailed
Graham and Carruthers are each jailed for four years and three months.

The time they have served on remand will count towards the sentence.
