Good luck George - and very well done on your previous thread.
I've all but given up on this forum - but your threads are always packed with effort, are an enjoyable read and an interesting journey with twists and turns/ups and downs. As one of the world's most renowned philosophers (Ronan Keating) once said: "Life is a rollercoaster, just gotta ride it!" |

Captain Cuddles, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 6.30 Southwell Captain Cuddles ran well last summer to make the frame at Ascot (7f), Newbury (7f) and Chester (6f) when trained by Richard Hannon, and he made an encouraging start for his new yard when finishing third at Wolverhampton (7f) in November in race won by Doctor Khan Junior, who has since gone in again off an 11lb higher mark. Captain Cuddles's new trainer is still awaiting her first winner, and the selection hasn't built on that effort in two starts since when not helping himself by taking a keen hold, but he wasn't entirely disgraced last time at Wolverhampton (6f) despite finishing only tenth of the 12 runners, given he was only beaten 4L in a race from which the third and fifth have won since. That form still leaves him with a bit to find with Gobi Sunset and Golden Passport (who got an "eyecatcher" form comment from the RP), and there's a concern that he may prefer 7f on the AW, but a chance is taken at the odds that he can at least press for a place. Hallowed Time, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 7.00 Southwell Hallowed Time, who had finished in the first four three times in competitive handicaps at the Curragh last summer, came in for some late market support on his debut for Mark Loughnane at Wolverhampton last month, but blew his chance when rearing at the start, however, he did make some good late headway to be beaten just over 3L at the finish despite only finishing 9th, in a competitive handicap from which the third and fifth have won since. It's a concern that the rearing at the start wasn't an isolated instance as he did it on at least two occasions in Ireland last season, but if he can get it right at the start then he's handicapped to go well given he's 3lb lower than when finishing second of 17 at the Curragh last August. |

Cheers cobs.
Unfortunately a couple of poor ones to start the new thread. It would seem Captain Cuddles is going the wrong way for his new yard, though he might be happier back on the green stuff when the turf starts. Hallowed Time got away well enough this time but he weakened quickly in the straight. 2024 Running P/L: +27.4 pts |

Strong Team, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 4.15 Newcastle
I'm going to have a speculative each-way pick on the veteran Strong Team, a four-time hurdles winner who's still seeking a first success on the level. He's only managed two places from sixteen starts at this venue on the AW, but both those frame efforts came under Paul Mulrennan, who's back in the plate today having ridden him only four times previously. Those two places came over 12.5f, and he seems to stay two miles round here too, so this drop back to 10f might not be ideal, but when Mulrennan rode him previously he gave him forward rides, so he's likely to ensure this isn't run at a dawdle. Strong Team dropped away over the stretch two miles here on his latest start, but that came off a 50-day break and in a higher grade, so hopefully he strips fitter this time. |

Like all my best each-way longshots...Strong Team finished 4th.

Well done with everything all the same..
Remember the old adage, back a horse that finished 4th in a handicap next time out. I had a foreman who used to back fancied one's who's third and fourth letters were the same. He would of had Copper Mountain, Bobby Joe Leg and Call to Action today. He was always walking around with Divining Rods.. |

Your logic was on the right path George, unlucky not to get rewarded with a place .

It looked worth a shot despite the inadequate trip given the Mulrennan angle, in a race that lacked depth. Good luck today.

Jumeira Vision, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 8.30 Wolverhampton
Jumeira Vision appreciated the step up in trip when winning here over 9.5f in November, when he left the impression that he would stay longer trips too. He then ran okay to finish 4th of 14 at Chelmsford (10f) on his next start, but reportedly stopped quickly when stepped up to 11f round Southwell last month. It's interesting though that despite the poor effort at Southwell, he was solid in the betting when returned to Dunstall Park and stepped up to 12f for his latest start, but the winner seemed to get the run of things out in front, however, the selection kept on quite well to finish 4th and certainly did enough to warrant another try over this far. Taylor Fisher, who rode Jumeira Vision for the time on that latest start, hopefully knows the horse better now, and blinkers are given a go. |

Cheers Billy, good luck with yours this evening.
Nothing from me today for this thread. Jumeira Vision seemed able to dictate the pace but was a bit keen on it in the first-time blinkers, and he had no answer to the finishing burst of the first two. 2024 Running P/L: +26.8 pts |

Liberty Bay, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 8.00 Wolverhampton
I'm going to have a speculative each-way pick on Liberty Bay, who has generally been poor for a while, having placed over C/D off a mark of 71 as a 3YO, but now as a 6YO her mark has bottomed out. However, her yard has been in good form of late and she hasn't run too badly on a couple of occasions having not been beaten far over C/D last month despite finishing only 7th of the 11 runners, and last time at Kempton (5f) she kept on well to finish 4th. Her yard also run a more obvious contender here in Arlecchino's Gift, but what may help her chance is Doc Sportello being withdrawn, as that may mean there is less pace pressure if the plan is to be ridden prominently from her inside draw. Banana, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 8.30 Wolverhampton I'm going to give another chance to Banana, who probably ran better from a wide draw than her finishing position suggested over C/D in December, on what was her third run back from a year off, and there have been stronger hints since that she may be able to lose her maiden tag, notably three runs back when going down by just a neck over C/D in a 0-62, having been a pound 'wrong' at the weights. She could only finish 6th of the 8 runners on on her next outing here over 5f in a 0-50 classified stakes, but again shaped better than the bare result as she didn't get a clear run up the straight and finished with running left in her. Banana was a bit disappointing when I selected her last-time-out over C/D, since when she's been a non-runner at Southwell, but she's generally been shaping as though there is a bigger effort in her, so gets another vote at the prices. |

Another couple of poor efforts.
Liberty Bay helped set the pace with morning favourite Sisters In The Sky, in what was the quicker of the two divisions, and they both faded out of the places inside the final furlong. Banana, who was very weak in the betting, was soon taking a fierce grip in the other division when the pace steadied, and she stopped to nothing in the straight. 2024 Running P/L: +22.8 pts |

Can't help but think Banana would be better suited to running on Sundae nights.

No selection today, but I see Banana is still down as a runner in the 8.00, despite last night's dismal performance in a weaker race.
If she does run and win, they'd better re-name her Lazarus imo ![]() |

Wee Fat Mac, 1pt EW @ 15-2, 3.55 Wolverhampton
Wee Fat Mac didn't manage to complete a hat-trick of wins when upped in grade over 6f at Southwell towards the end of December, but still shaped as though in good form when finishing fourth of the eleven runners, particular based on how the race panned out, with the first two getting cover round the inside and the race developing with the first three more centre to far side up the straight. The selection could only finish 3rd of 6 on his latest start at Newcastle, but he was ridden prominently on a night when the wind was described as "strong, half against", and the first two had sat off the pace, with the winner carrying a light weight having had Tommie Jakes aboard taking off a useful 7lb. Wee Fat Mac has been weak in the betting this morning, and he may need a bit of luck from his inside draw, but hopefully can at least challenge for a place if getting the breaks. Diamond Bay, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 7.15 Kempton (4 PLACES) Diamond Bay impressed when he won a 14f Racing League handicap round Wolverhampton in September, when ridden more prominently than has sometimes been the case, and having led over 2f out, he ran on strongly to win in a good time. His two runs since at Southwell are easy enough to forgive, having been turned out just six days later on the back off that big effort to contest another Racing League handicap over two miles, and then he was returning off a break over a trip (12f) probably short of his best nowadays when finishing only 8th of 10 there at the end of December. Diamond Bay was making it 2-2 at Wolverhampton with that Racing League victory, but has plenty of form at Kempton including two wins over shorter trips, and although he could finish only 3rd of 7 over this evening's trip of two miles back in March, the winner went on to finish second in the Northumberland Plate. Kapparis Kid, 1pt EW @ 4-1, 7.45 Kempton Kapparis Kid, who is a half-brother to winners on synthetic surfaces, created a favourable impression on his all-wather debut at Chelmsford in December, when having been dropped in from his widest draw, he sustained his effort up the straight to win from a debutante who has won twice since. Ross Ryan, who was aboard there, retains the ride, and while Kapparis Kid has to prove he's up to a mark of 75 having recorded an RPR of 73 for that success, he's unexposed on Polytrack and open to further improvement for his current yard. |

GL George, quite fancy Rainbow Dream to outrun his price in the 7.15. Got cracking speed ratings at the track but has been getting a bit too far back in his races. Might just be that age is catching up with him but will give him one more go with 4 places on here, hoping that the race is run at a decent clip.

By:
Cobs, not one of Diamond Bay's or Rainbow Dreamer's better efforts this evening. This was a qualifier for the London Stayers' Series Final, and it was pointed out on RTV about the races on AW Finals Day now being handicaps, so perhaps other targets for some of these 90-odd rated horses in the future, provided their rating doesn't become too low to get in such races.
It wasn't a bad thing to be close to the pace on the Wolverhampton card, and Wee Fat Mac was well positioned with this in mind, but he couldn't match the resurgent Beauzon. I was way off target with Kapparis Kid, who hadn't run for 54 days and was weak in the betting all day. No complaints with how the race was run, with the big outsider who was also held-up running on from the rear to finish second, but the selection, who appeared to be sweating between his hind legs down at the start and was a bit keen in the race, found nothing. 2024 Running P/L: +19.3 pts |

Unlucky with WFM today George. At least they rode Rainbow Dreamer a bit more prominently today but I think he's gone and I hope they retire him soon. Not a great day's betting for me but Virtual Hug at Wolvs just about saved me. Upwards and onwards!

Thunder Max, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 5.30 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Thunder Max didn't shape too badly on his stable debut over C/D in December when returning from nearly six-months off, considering he made the running on a night when the wind was described as "fairly strong, half against", and although he was unable to match the first three home, he did keep on okay to finish 4th. He has around three lengths to make up on Cusack on that form which came in a "hands and heels" race for apprentices, but when claims are taken into consideration, the selection is 15lb better off. It's a concern that Thunder Max has since run poorly at Chelmsford over 10f, so it does take a leap of faith to support him on the back of that, but a chance is taken at the odds that he can build on that previous effort now returned to Newcastle. |
|
By:
There was reason to think Thunder Max might get closer to Cusack this time, admittedly based on form which might not have been the most reliable given it came in a steadily-run affair and into a headwind, but I couldn't have been more wrong because whereas Cusack won by half-the-track, the selection dropped out the back of the telly.

Banana, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 2.02 Wolverhampton
I must be bananas to be selecting Banana again, but the booking of Billy Loughnane has tempted me back in. The concern is that she might have gone off the boil for the time being having been disappointing the last twice, particularly so on her latest start over C/D when she stopped to nothing in the straight having taking a fierce grip early. However, there had been signs after returning from over a year off that there may be a basement-grade handicap in her, including when going down by just a neck in a 0-62 over C/D in late-December, when like today she was racing from out of the handicap. It does take a leap of faith to support after that latest dismal effort, but hopefully she can get into a better rhythm this time under Loughnane, with a handy draw to help, and if this is one of her better days then that previous form in a stronger handicap than today's 0-53 would give her place claims at least. |
