Turn Up The Beat, 1pt EW @ 66-1, 5.30 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
It was just a claimer in which Turn Up The Beat finished 5th of 14 here last month on what was his second start, but he shaped with some promise, leading until just inside the final furlong before fading. He meets the second, Masonbrook Meadow (who has since finished 4th in a handicap) on 10lb better terms for just over 4L. Turn Up The Beat subsequently changed trainers and his third run for a mark came in a 7f Curragh maiden where he finished a tailed-off 125-1 shot, but the heavy ground might not have suited and it ensured he goes handicapping off a lowly mark. He's only been rated 52, so while he receives weight all round he may find this 0-77 too hot, but a chance is taken each-way at big odds, particularly as this drop to 6f looks worth a try. Bright Dick, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 6.30 Dundalk (4 PLACES) Bright Dick is a frustrating sort who has caught the eye more than once getting rolling too late, particularly so at last season's Galway festival (8.5f, yielding), but also at this course too. His best form here has come at 7f but his run style and that Galway effort would suggest he should have no trouble with the mile. He's returning from over two months off this evening, and he shapes as the type who needs everything to fall right, but there should be some pace on to come off here, so if this is one of his better days hopefully he can at least make the frame. Fascinating Shadow, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 8.00 Dundalk (4 PLACES) Fascinating Shadow has been running well in defeat here over 12f without quite making the frame, each time finishing behind a more patiently ridden Celtic Revival. Whether this drop back to 10.5f is ideal or he'd be better served by ridden with a tad more restraint at 12f, not sure, but he's shaping as though there's a bigger effort in him, and is now 8lb below the mark he won off here over the 12f trip two seasons ago. |

Cheers BrianBear, stewarts and Brian.
Got a bit of a fright when 'stewards enquiry' flashed up unexpectedly on the screen but there was nothing to be concerned about. A Betfair SP of 190 for Turn Up The Beat, who's only rated 52 but was running in a 0-77. He showed up prominently until weakening out of it inside the final furlong, and there'll be weaker races for him to run in. A poor effort from Fascinating Shadow, who was at least entitled on recent form to finish somewhere near the third-placed Celtic Revival, but looked beat before they'd even turned into the home straight. 2024 Running P/L: +81.95 pts |

Watchya, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 4.55 Kempton (4 PLACES) Watchya probably ran better than his down-the-field finishing position suggested over C/D when last seen five months ago in the valuable London Sprint Series Final, having contested a decent gallop from his wide draw before losing second place just over a furlong out and weakening, in a race that was run nearly a second inside the Racing Post standard time. The draw again hasn't been kind and fitness has to be taken on trust but he's 2lb lower and this is a drop back in grade. Natacata, 1pt EW @ 13-2, 5.15 Chelmsford Natacata's effort over C/D in January probably wanted marking up based on how the race panned out in a contest where the runners finished well strung out and she fared best of the prominent racers, doing well in the circumstances considering she'd been keen enough. She reversed the form with the winner, Man Of Riddles, who had probably benefited from the honest pace of that race, when they reopposed next-time-out at Kempton, when both finished out of the frame in 5th and 7th behind the current favourite for this, Legacy Power; though again, Natacata might have shaped a bit better than the bare result having not settled and then made a move plenty soon enough out wide. Natacata ran well back at Kempton when finishing second to Zivaniya, who has won again since, and whom she meets here on 5lb better terms for 1.5L. The selection doesn't face an easy task in trying to reverse Kempton form with Legacy Power, who is actually a pound better off when Callum Hutchinson's 3lb claim is factored in, but hopefully the return to this C/D can suit. |

Great winner yesterday George! Quite fancy Natacata as well today. Like Watchya and Intervention at prices in the Kemp race. GL

Another good effort from Intervention, Cobs.
Back to normality for me with a couple of losers. The Baker-Callan combo had landed the big handicap on the card, but never looked like following up with Watchya, who was caught wide and raced with the choke out. No apparent excuse for Natacata, who disputed the lead with the eventual second but couldn't hang on for a place, dropping to fifth inside the final furlong. 2024 Running P/L: +77.95 pts |

Whisky McGonagall, 1pt EW @ 11-2, 3.20 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Whisky McGonagall was unfortunate to bump into the progressive The Caltonian when finishing runner-up over C/D on his penultimate start in a 0-75, an effort which had come on the back of a pipe-opener following a 7-month break, and perhaps the run was again needed following a further 64-day break when not seeing his race out at Southwell on his latest start. He only made it to the track three times last year so maybe he hasn't been the easiest to train, but hopefully fitness won't be an issue this time and that penultimate form would look quite solid back here now dropped in grade to a 0-66. He is drawn on the wing in one, so it remains to be seen how that pans out, but he may still be open to some improvement having only had the seven starts. |

Thanks Cobs. Good luck today.
A couple of riskier ones today with one thing and another, not least the conditions. Sounds Of Spring, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 3.15 Thirsk (4 PLACES) It takes a leap of faith to support Sounds Of Spring on what he has shown in three starts on the all-weather since joining John Butler, but we know his best form in Ireland when trained by Ken Condon came on soft / heavy ground, and he can race off a mark 13lb lower than when finishing a close-up 3rd of 14 at Naas (6f, heavy) on his turf reappearance last season. He is a seven-year-old now and he only managed a further three starts for his previous yard last year with breaks between the latter two, so it could be he's just on the decline now, but given his reduced mark and the opportunity to race on a more suitable surface again, he looks worth chancing at the prices, while hoping his low draw doesn't prove to be a negative. Tasaver, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 5.45 Thirsk (4 PLACES) Tasaver is still a maiden after twelve starts but his narrow miss in a mile 0-82 Pontefract handicap (g-s) last October off a pound higher mark, when he didn't have the easiest of trips, suggested there are races to be won with him. He disappointed in two further starts last season, including one on heavy when well backed, which would have to be a concern today, but suppose it's possible he might have had enough for the season by then. His yard's runners tend to need a run or two to advance their fitness, but did have one win on its reappearance last week at Catterick, and Tasaver did run well on his reappearance last season at Beverley (5f, soft) when sent off 7-2 favourite and finishing second; that said, Tim Easterby has two making their seasonal return in this but David Allan rides a shorter-priced runner for an outside yard, though Duran Fentiman was aboard the selection for that good Pontefract effort. For one who stayed on so well over a mile at Pontefract, whether 7f round Thirsk is ideal, even on testing ground, is a concern, as might be his lowish-draw by the time we get to the last race, but a chance is taken at the odds on this drop into class 6 company. |

Cheers 'ace, unfortunately not one of my better days.
Sounds Of Spring might have had his ground, but couldn't be given away in the betting being sent off a Betfair SP of 92, and he offered nothing. I took a chance on the fitness of Tasever, but he was sending out distress signals at the top of the straight and ultimately dropped out the back of the telly. 2024 Running P/L: +80.55 pts |

Lady Nagin, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 6.30 Chelmsford
I'm going to take a chance on Lady Nagin at the odds. She wasn't disgraced on her final two runs for Sean Woods last October, particularly the former effort at Wolverhampton (6f, 0-65) when she didn't have the easiest of trips from a tricky draw but disputed the lead until dropping to 4th place inside the final half-furlong; and it was a 0-70 in which she finished 4th of 8 over 6f at this course on her final start of 2023. Her debut for Adam West came in a 0-65 at Kempton (6f) fifteen days ago when she was plenty keen enough on the front-end and weakened out of it from under 2f out. She's by Kodiac, isn't the biggest and her new yard have had horses run well on their reappearances, so whether she's going to go on as a 4YO remains to be seen, but hopefully that comeback run has taken the fizz out of her, the hood which clearly didn't help is removed, and this is a drop in grade to a 0-57. Her two career wins have come over 6f at Southwell, the last one off a 10lb higher mark, but she shapes as though she's worth another try at 5f. |
|
By:
Lady Nagin had the early pace to dispute the lead on this drop back to 5f but didn't see her race out, fading out of it inside the final furlong.

The Cola Brasil, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 6.10 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
The Cola Brasil tends to run his race more often than not round here as evidenced by 5 places from nine attempts, and although it's perhaps disappointing he hasn't managed to put his head in front at this course, not sure he's always had things go his way. He's been in fair form this year since returning to his old yard following a spell with Henry Spiller, twice finishing close-up, and although he could finish only 5th of 14 on his latest start off an increased mark, he was drawn one in a race where the first four came from stalls 15, 16, 7 and 9. The selection meets the winner of that race, Ferrybank, on 6lb better terms for 3L. Tynamite, who finished third, also runs here, as does Allo Arry (9th, didn't get a clear run). The latter has run since and again didn't get the best of luck with Keithen Kennedy on board for the first time, who claimed 4lb in that apprentice handicap but now claims his full 7lb. The Cola Brasil again has a lowish draw in five, but according to the Racing Post's draw analysis, low numbers tend to have a slight advantage over 7f, so hopefully he's not hindered by track position. Franco Gasso, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 7.00 Southwell It's easy enough to forgive Franco Gasso's poor effort last time at Doncaster when finishing a well beaten last of 12, as the soft ground was probably against him and he wasn't helped by stumbling badly and being hampered at the start, on what was his first run for 76 days. His two wins have come over 11.5f at Yarmouth on good / g-f ground, but he hasn't run too badly in two starts over this C/D when probably shaping better than the bare form on each occasion. It's a concern that his yard haven't been in the best of form having gone 69 runners and 76 days without a winner, with trainer Kevin Frost at the top of today's RP cold list, but the yard have had a few run well in the past fornight. Franco Gasso is down the weights, this is a slight drop in grade, blinkers are given another try (one place from four runs when wearing them), and Rossa Ryan rides for the first time. |
|
By:
On a night when it looked an advantage to be on the pace and come stands' side in the home straight, The Cola Brasil was soon poorly positioned towards the rear and on the inside. Not for the first time he caught the eye finishing his race off well but didn't quite get there for 4th place.
Franco Gasso's yard have been struggling for winners, though they've had a few run well of late, but this one didn't see his race out, even allowing for having sat closer to the pace than might have been ideal. 2024 Running P/L: +74.55 pts |

You can always rely on the betfair forum to get an out-of-form trainer a winner. I pointed out how Keven Frost hadn't had a winner for a while, at the top of the RP's cold list...Very next runner bolts up
