Nice winner, DG, good luck with the last one.

Dismal effort from Floats On Air.

Sun Festival didn't run too badly from the front, but it set up for those ridden more patiently and he dropped to fifth place late on, perhaps finding the trip just stretching him round Southwell.

Congresbury, 1pt win @ 11-2, 7.00 Kempton

Congresbury made an encouraging debut over C/D in August when finishing runner-up to a Johnston-trained filly, who was Listed-place on her next start. He hasn't necessarily progressed in two starts over a mile following a four-month break, but he didn't have the most efficient of trips on the latest of them at Lingfield, when there was also a suspicion that he had got racing soon enough in dispute of the lead before dropping to fourth place in the closing stages. He makes his handicap debut here and returns from a 6 week-break with the drop back to 7f looking worth a try based on that latest evidence.

Anisoptera, 1pt EW @ 5-1, 8.00 Kempton (4 PLACES)

Anisoptera had probably run better than the bare result suggested over two miles at this track in October, when never too far away in a race that set up for the closers, before fading to fifth inside the final furlong. Following a run over hurdles, she finished runner-up over 12f at Lingfield earlier this month, when making up a lot of ground from towards the rear of the field.

She's a three-time winner over two miles (including twice at this course), so the obvious concern, even based on that latest 12f form, is the drop back further in trip to 11f, but presumably they will try and keep her closer to the pace this time and, at a course she evidently goes well at, hopefully she won't be too far away at the business end.

Thank you formoftheace, and good luck to yourself.

The shortlist was pretty bare today and is why I'm bereft of any longshots to select.

Congresbury, who looked on the small side alongside his rivals, seemed to get a soft enough lead, if a little keen, but he folded tamely. His trainer is 1-22 since the turn of the year which includes a couple of unplaced favs within the last fortnight. Hard to say they're out of form as they've had a winner and a second in recent days, but that was a pretty dismal effort.

Anisoptera got a sensible ride from Harry Burns in that he didn't gun her to go forward in an attempt to compensate for the drop in trip, particularly as the race produced comparatively what was the best time on the night, but having had every chance up the straight, she failed to pick up.

is there a stop at loss limit GEORGE? I'm thinking you're a quarter way to infamy. And you'll be quoting Kenneth Williams from the abuse you'll be getting!

Hopefully your luck will change.

GEORGE, from what others say, I'm sure you'll turn it round, just make sure you get the stakes right when you hit a purple patch, they don't last.

"from what others say"?

Oh, you mean the evidence of my previous threads.

Well, as previously mentioned, they were predominantly summer Flat threads. I've not previously done one of these threads at this time of year - so failure on this occasion is a distinct possibility.

Chief's Will, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 1.00 Southwell (4 PLACES)

Chief's Will has been surprisingly weak in the betting so far this morning. He was a bit disappointing on his latest start over C/D even allowing for meeting with a bit of trouble, but he'd previously twice finished second over C/D in competitive handicaps, including when second to Zealot, who has won three times since (including the race Chief's Will ran in last time). He's still able to race off the same mark, so it will be surprising if he's not up to winning from this sort of rating at some point.

Aikido, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 6.30 Newcastle (4 PLACES)

I'm going to give another chance to Aikido, despite a concern about whether 5f is suitable for him. He left Ger Lyons rated 80, and it's been a fairly rapid descent down the ratings for his current yard, however, there were more encouraging signs two starts back over 6f at Wolverhampton, when he led to a furlong out before weakening into 5th place, having taken a grip.

I selected him last time at Southwell, when he was dropped into 0-57 company and tried at 5f in first-time cheekpieces, but having had no trouble lying up with the pace, again taking a keen hold, he seemed to get done for a bit of toe and his head went up in the air, but having looked as though he was going to drop away, he did keep on again.

He's clearly now a risky proposition, but a stiffer test at the trip may help and a first-time hood may help him to settle better.

Another Angel, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 7.00 Newcastle (4 PLACES)

Another Angel's seven career wins have all come over C/D, and the age of 9 now, being 20lb below his last winning mark probably just reflects the fact that age is catching up with him. However, of his two recent starts at this track, the penultimate one came over 6f when he made the running into a headwind, and last time over C/D he was running in a 0-72 grade, when although finishing only 6th of the 7 runners, he was only beaten just under three lengths.

He now drops back into a 0-57 grade and can race off a 12lb lower mark than when making the frame over C/D as recently as September, so while this looks quite competitive for the grade with three last-time-out winners in opposition and the two heading the weights also worthy of respect, this does look a more realistic opportunity for Another Angel.

Good luck George. Good write ups. I do follow and I am sure you will hit the board sometime but I never bet in races of this grade so I don't know the form. One point you raised about Aikido and putting his head in the air. I was told a while ago that sometimes, especially in sprints when they come under pressure, that they do this to fill up, then, as you say happened, they run on again. It doesn't always mean they are dodgepots.

Brigust1, thanks, and interesting thoughts regarding a potential reason his head carriage at Southwell.

I thought he ran better than the bare form suggested on his penultimate run for Lyons at Dundalk, which is why I've kept an eye on him, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then and it's now requiring a leap of faith to support him, but the hood and stiffer test at the trip may help.

Cheers all.

Virgin, yes, a couple of firms were still offering the four places.

stewarts, you are now officially the thread's lucky mascot! Wink

Aikido, who's due to drop 4lb, again carried his head a bit high, so as he's had a previous wind-op, maybe there's a bit of a breathing issue there, but he did run on to get the fourth place, albeit no match for the first three.

Another Angel gave it a good shot from the front but was a sitting duck for the heavily-backed fav under Billy Loughnane, and then he lost second inside the last 100 yards and dropped to 4th.
