Aiui there was no point in challenging line calls because they only had Hawkeye which would simply confirm its own decision. There were no human line judges or alternative computer systems, so no-one to overrule Hawkeye.

not sure how fancied,seeded she was but emma was drawn to play last years semi finalist in 1st round proper who withdrew with injury so emma beat an alternate and so picked up the beatable opponents a beaten semi finalist would expect to beat/draw in early rounds |

I did find it odd that the only time she fell was when she was in trouble and she did manage to graze her knee...May have been nothing but these things seldom are.

So she fell over and risked a more serious injury in order to get 2 minutes medical time out! She said in her interview (which I believe) that she really wanted to carry on in case it stiffened up but was not allowed to by the umpire. I have no idea what Fernandez was complaining about.

Fernandez has apparently apologised now saying she didn’t realise it was a blood injury.in terms of how the trainer/ injury situation is abused & used as a tactic by many players these days that particular incident was absolutely blameless.

Those crabbing that Emma hasn't beaten any top seeds, then given she was 150 before the start obviously shows seeding isn't the be all & end all.
Very rarely in women's tennis will the no1 face the no2 in a slam final. Only players on form go deep in slams, seeding is irrelevant. |

it gives you a pathway to final avoiding the next best player and half the best players in the field, anyone beating a seed /top seed inherits that pathway, its a gambling forum ,with people over reacting to her performances with her avoiding the top dozen players you may get an inflated price for players ranked above her when they meet, |

Have to agree with Wesdag to an extent - what she achieved (without even dropping a set) is truly amazing - but the ladies game (even at the highest level) is full of flakes, bottlers and the mentally fragile.

I expect most people on this thread will be highly delighted if she never wins another final. I think all players should have their family history checked before being allowed to play so as to satisfy the purists.

Agreed Sparrow,but I think she does have something to enable her to go on and win more tournaments.
Each to their own but if I was born in a country be it Canada, Algeria,Spain Italy blah blah surely you would show some small allegiance to them and play for them on the world stage.I do not know her full history and do not want to but to me I cannot fathom it.......... |

The first thing is to stay injury-free and she seems to have had at least her fair share of injuries as a junior. In her own words she had no pressure, no expectations and nothing to lose these past 3 weeks - and that will never ever be the case again, she has got a lot of hype and expectation to live up to now.
Whoever took the 3.60 for Wimbledon 2022 is an optimist imo!  |

I along with most other people cannot remember anything before I was 2 years of age so this girl who has only known this country as home should not have all this nonsense thrown at her. It shames this country that people can behave in such a manner towards a young person in this way.

Her mum and dad went to Canada though and they welcomed them with open arms I would guess, but with most world citizens they end up in the UK for some to me unknown reason.(The UK is finished in my eyes)
Perhaps you could shed some light on this and by the way I think she is a smashing player and a winner,I'm not knocking her for what she has achieved... |

She understands and can identify the significance of "Sweet Caroline", not Rule Britannia. With the grounding and upbringing by her parents **** from Romania (depraved) and China (starved) hardwork and respect of others have been drummed into her; nothing comes easy, hard work is a necessity.
Unlike some of our locals whose parents were once immigrants, but still have yet to cotton onto these two qualities that differentiate between ethnic minorities. |

@WESDAG re how come ER won off 150 (btw am I the last person to notice her initials are ER as in the Queen -- that's how British she is!! Except she is the Queen in Canada as well. Skip that.)
Anyway, remember she'd not be off 150 if she'd not had to drop out of Wimbledon with breathing difficulties. At the time it was put down to anxiety but imo at the US Open at times she seemed to be breathing rather heavily. Hope I'm wrong! Anyway, ER really is good with a tennis bat, and lucky to be playing at a time after the Williams sisters' hegemony, and when Naomi Osaka, probably the most talented player around, has her own issues, so Emma really could go on to be the best in the world, although now she is a known quantity so all the other players and the coaches will be studying the videos to work out how best to play against her. |

The majority of anti-Brexit on this forum are probably non-British or UK domicile. Also, an "immigration" abuse by new EU membership citizen is certainly non-conducive for the development and enhancement of UK economy eg lesser and not highly uneducated/qualified EU citizens doing menial tasks or skivvy jobs. A more selective and targeted approach/policies eg those employed in Australia and New Zealand will not only enhance their economies in the future it will most likely ensure a more harmonious and coherent society too. |

Only a small minority of British people oppose migration per se. It is the relative numbers coming here compared to the resources they need that is causing friction. If we opened our borders to all, how many would come? 10 million, 100 million? We might ask how her parents came here but surely Emma herself should be welcomed as a breath of fresh air. A lot of nonsense will be written of course. For a start, how much of the £1.8 million will she actually get? After taxes, salaries for her help team etc. she will be lucky to get the million. Still not bad for an 18yo fresh out of school. She is not qualified for the end of season top 8 tournament so may not play a top ten player before Australia in January.
