No. It's called patriotism. You get behind your fellow countrymen and women in their exploits, be it fighting wars or playing sports. Just look at the patriotism shown in the States. They put us to shame and sadly it's people like you that have led to it.

if she does does a drake gods plan video where she hands out 1 million quid to under priviledged families I will genuinely start praising her but upto now all I know of her she is a great tennis player potentially the best in the world moving forwards.

I was shouting as hard as the next bloke last night. It's not her fault that I'd barely heard of her till 48 hours ago. What are meant to do, sit on our hands and shake our heads in cynical disregard? She was up there doing something special - I cheered, it's not being on a bandwagon, it's a natural response. The pschophancy will come later - that's the time to switch off.

mrspock, if you look at a map you may discover Montreal in Canada is bit nearer to New York than Kent, it's quite likely she had a fair few more supporters there. As for neutrals they pick their side and often change to get a better/longer match. It's what creates an atmosphere at sporting events and Raducanu more than rose to the occasion.

Correct Swifty , it's nothing personal against any player but the crowd quite naturally start siding with the underdog or which ever player is behind in the match , they've been doing that in ALL the grand slams since Adam was a lad.
More than subtle differences on the odd occasion when a local player is on court , then again naturally they cheer them whether winning or losing. Nothing to do with nationalities , it's just human nature. |

I thought she showed a lot of class both on and off the court, especially given the ignorance of the crowd. I thought Fernandez (maybe influenced by the crowd) behaved more like an obnoxious Yank and lacked the kind of class that one would expect from most Canadians - she should not that:
1) If your opponent is bleeding on the playing service the rules dictate a medical time-out. It's not a choice, it's mandatory. 2) After you've been played off the court, leave the long speeches to the victor. Your speech should be short and focus largely on how well your opponent played. 3) After that you're supposed to slope of quietly and let the winner enjoy their well earned moment. |

@ swifty- its true Montreal is nearer to NY- but I don't think you can call supporting one player against the other "a neutral".During the medical break,there was an atmosphere of jeering Raducanu;again during the presentation the loser got more applause than when the winner came up to speak.
The Management is right-Fernandez showed no class after she lost. On the other hand Raducanu showed humility and respect. |

Brilliant achievement for the young Canadian Emma, her opponents group were very aggressive throughout the game and not very sporting especially her younger sister imho .

TM I think they were both winners. Fernandez beat three top flight players during 12hrs on court before the final while Raducanu beat miss nobody in 7 hrs. They both performed brilliantly and are a credit to the sport. I did find it odd that the only time she fell was when she was in trouble and she did manage to graze her knee. I don't know how many times that happens? May have been nothing but these things seldom are.

Anyhoo.... that lovely, talented, British 18 year old was as cool as they come ...... I'm completely stunned by that level of maturity and focus in one so young. More power to her. I wish I had one hundredth of that cool when having a punt. :)

Good to see the conversation carrying on whilst finding BAA couldn't find an f'in ARRIVAL ramp for my plane at T5.

I was outlining why the other girl was so upset. If this was normal she wouldn't have been so upset. And I was responding to TM's point AT. I think both played brilliantly and spoke well afterwards. I do also think the loser had a harder passage to the final. You can read into that what you want. |

there is something about eastern European countries and tennis. As it is an individual and not a team sport, nationality is much less important but when you look at the top 100 women players, -ova, -anu and -ic appears at the end of the surnames of many of them regardless of which country they represent. I am just delighted that Emma Raducanu's parents decided to bring her here at age 2. As a geneticist by training, I am pleased to see that the theory of hybrid vigour is being proved every year in sporting achievement.

MARTINA hall of fame stuff,20 plus grand slams etc,surely going OTT ,looking at her path to victory 12th in world was the best player she beat, maybe it was just a week when stars aligned ,draw worked for her etc etc.
23rd in world now so she,ll get some winnable games avoid top seeds till later in in tournaments which should help her progress |

It was not just her though. I watch most grand slam tournaments (although sadly, without Amazon, I only saw the final of this one) and it was the best quality women's match since Serena and Sharapova at their peak. Most teenage stars hit good shots but a few shockers as well but these two don't miss many easy shots. It was also refreshing to watch a match without endless delays from disputed line calls. What ever system Flushing Meadows uses needs to be rolled out everywhere.

sagefrom, I agree. It was high quality stuff. But when they showed their Wimbledon girls clash from 3 years ago you can see why. Both fantsastic ball strikers.

ImSoLucky, they must have a laser system. There were no lines judges so the calls of out must be computer generated. Nobody questioned any calls, even the umpire.
