But yes if not, then just needs internet access the once to download it to phone then never again

Does that mean you only have 30 secs to enter your code before it becomes obsolete as a new one is generated dave?

eric
think of the nuclear activation process that requires 2 keys turned at the same time
bf have a key and the authenticator has a key
its just they both change every 30s in tandem

You don't need to understand it ericster - just believe that every time you click on the authenticator on your phone, betfair has an identical and unique to you authenticator, synchronised and producing the same code.

I know eric, you already said, but given your continued interest, I obviously wrongly assumed that you wanted more info.

Thanks sparrow,i presume they send an authorisation code to your phone everytime you log in?
By:

no it doesn't get "sent" - it works on its own, see the above posts.

No no dave, sorry, some people just can't be helped. I'm interested because it may very happen to me. It's just one more thing to worry about I suppose.
Maybe I'm hoping that with all these comments BF might invest in making the site secure, is that actually possible nowadays?
Like I said, once it's gone, it's gone.
I shall miss it but I shall accept it.

howard the authenticator is synced with your account the moment you enter the code provided by betfair - it is like identical twins giving the same new code every thirty seconds - one with betfair and one on your phone.

Can't even make sense of that, I'm not joking, sorry.

yes there are phone problems, but anyone can get a cheap phone on payg if necessary. You can even just use the phone for 2FA and never give out the number other than for that purpose - that would be even more security.

oh right thanks james, I know my crappy phone, about 3 years old, is supposed to be "smart" but didn't have the app already installed even though it had google play on it.

I believe you can use Google Authenticor on your desktop if you also use the Chrome Browser
By:
dave1357

The thing is, don''t try and understand 2-step authentication. It's irrelevant how it works. Just do it.

How do I turn it on?
To turn on the two-step authentication feature simply login to your Betfair account and visit ‘My Account’. Under ‘My Security’ tab you will find the setup screen. Just follow the instructions to sign up and configure your options. It only takes a couple of minutes.

How do I use it?
Two-step authentication is very easy to use and you will quickly get accustomed to the process. You start by logging in as usual. You will be presented with an additional login screen if your credentials are correct. Open the Google Authenticator from your phone and type the verification code in your browser. If the code is correct, you will be logged into your profile. You can choose to do this for every login or only for new devices within 'My Security'.

in the 2fa section there is a subsection called "backup"

to be used when your phone is not available etc

but i guess the hardest part is scanning the barcode...wonder how these guys manage at tesco self checkout.

CHARLTON, AND OTHERS,

sorry I reacted to the thread-header, who wouldn't.
ITC is just too much for me.
You wouldn't believe some of the things the last computer-doc put right for me and yes, some of those things a five year probably could have dealt with.

TESCO-CHECKOUT? Or any other checkout, forget it, it isn't gonna happen.

The older forumites will know I'm not a wind-up merchant, I really am that thick.

I'm just a fly on the wall here, ignore.

I cant remember charlton its been years since I went through the process of setting it up
I recall you do get given a security back up number but suspect its at the point after authenticator is downloaded and synced with the account
