Oh you poor chap. A little reading and some historical perspective, context and understanding can readily be achieved. A really useful way to spend a Sunday morning in fact. Education is invaluable.

You like Nazi germany?

Anyone with even a miniscule understanding of what life was like for the German people under Hitler would not type this question. In addition, this person does not understand basic English. And this is what we are dealing with. Completely uninformed, unintelligent, random opinions being expressed by people when we are in crisis and need empathy, intellect, clarity and understanding.

A MORI poll taken recently showed that 70% of British people feel that the restrictions do not currently go far enough. Things will have to go further soon and it is the irresponsible 30% who will be directly to blame.

A quarter of the country in lockdown

Yes, Johnson doing everything he can to avoid another national lockdown and the dire consequences this would have on the economy, people's health and civil liberties, by having local lockdowns everywhere. WAC.

tyred, in the late 60s when 80,000 people died of Hong Kong 'flu, what did the government do then?

a) cause panic among the masses, introduce emergency laws and allow themselves rule by decree that gave them powers which included placing people under house arrest and muzzling them outdoors, destroy the economy and cause mass unemployment?
Measures which may or may not have saved a single, but will almost certainly cost plenty (late cancer diagnoses, suicides, etc).

OR

b) nothing?

and btw tyred, what evidence do you have of a potential "free for all"

has this happened in Sweden where the population hasn't been subjected to such an outrageous and disgusting attack on civil liberties?

the world and communication was a different place 50 years ago.

you cannot get away with doing nothing like back then.

they got away with doing nothing because things were different back then.

today is a different world.

By:

When: 27 Sep 20 12:02
In 1968 they didn't "get away" with anything, the actions of this government in 2020 have shown that in 1968 the government of the day did entirely the right thing, just as other governments have done in years of excess deaths.

I do wish people would stop mentioning Sweden on these threads.

It really is an unfair comparison.

Sweden is twice the size of the UK yet their population is 6 times smaller.

Try comparing Sweden with Taiwan. Sweden is far bigger than Taiwan yet Taiwan's population is more than 2 times bigger.

Sweden took minimal Covid precautions whereas Taiwan went into lockdown at the first mention of Covid (They had suffered and learned fron SARS in 2003)

Sweden have over 90 thousand Covid cases and over 5 thousand deaths. Taiwan have 500 cases and 7, yes seven deaths. Taiwan came out of lockdown in May.

Each country had their own ideas about the threat and the options, and each individual will have their own opinion. But for those that want to hold Sweden up as an example perhaps they should think again.

Not one bit, tyred

Population of Stockholm around 976,000

Number of deaths: 2,400

that's 0.002% of the population in Stockholm

and of those 2,400, how many had serious co-morbidities?

So, REDROB, I think Stockholm, in particular, is actually a very good example of what happens in a large population when you don't put people under house arrest and threaten them with big fines if they refuse to wear a face nappy.

PS tyred will be fuming

London pop's around 9 mill and about 7,000 deaths. Using your Stockholm stats Londons death rate would be 20,000.

So stockholm with a population of about a million has 2400 deaths, The whole of Taiwan with a population of 24 mill has 7 deaths.

Why use Sweden , why not The USA that also had no national lockdown.

So you stick with Sweden George, I'll side with the Taiwan model thanks.

And of those 7,000, how many died with rather of c-19, and how many had serious co-morbidities with limited life expectancy whatever?
By:

According to Cancer Research UK, two million people have had there diagnosis and / or treatment delayed because of covid-19 and the lockdown.

How many of these people will die prematurely because of the delays?

Just because some prefer to obey guidelines does not mean they are scared. But if precautions become more severe would it be wrong to place the blame on the dissenters.

And apparently, saddo, presentations with coronary conditions well down too.

There may well be excess deaths, REDROB, but that has happened before, the only difference being the governments of the day didn't think it necessary to scare the sh*t out of people, destroy jobs and businesses, and decimate civil liberties.

I was due my annual echo cardiogram (previously had aortic valve replacement )this month but it was changed to a telephone appointment instead with a possibility of one in six months. I asked if they were seeing many patients and was told that they have a waiting list of 2,500.
My cardiology appointment has now also become a telephone appointment next week and an arthritis appointment has been cancelled.

You either care about people dying or you do not, no matter what they die of and at what age.

If you do not approve of mask-wearing and the restrictions you do not care about your fellow man.

I am team Sweden.  By letting it spread in a reasonably controlled manner, they do seem to be over the worst of it.  Countries with strict lock downs like New Zealand have problems ahead.  Very broadly speaking, the virus will claim the same amount of lives in a particular country, lock down or not. All lock downs do is kick the can further down the road, but they create lots of non-Covid horrors in the process.  The reason that everyone has treated this in a different way to 1968/69 is these flawed models from the likes of Ferguson.  One report that has surfaced recently from SAGE stated that the UK could have up to 1.5 million deaths without any interventions.  Bloody hell, that is 1.5 times the current death total for the entire planet!  Faced with those sorts of forecasts from the so called experts, it is little wonder that world leaders (including Boris) basically sh*t themselves and imposed these draconian measures.  When this is all over and the story is written, the likes of Ferguson will have a lot to answer for.
