GPS is accurate enough I think.  The absolute accuracy might be +/- 5 to 10m, but that's not hugely important - you don't much care exactly where Dobbin is on the face of the Earth, you care whether Dobbin is in front of behind Red Rum and by how far.  And most if not all of the contributors to the GPS error budget will be identical for a set of identical receivers in close physical proximity (and so using the same set of satellites), so relative displacements should be about right.

Ditto velocity figures should be right and relative velocities doubly so.

I had a look at the sample data set TPD published when they were first offering this (a flat race from Wolverhampton, as I recall) and it looked usable.

That's kind of my question about the US racing graphics. Occasionally, one is way off the back of the graphic nowhere near the rest of the accurate representation, or can oscillate about. My only theory is that they use GPS and the odd one is very inaccurate, rather than they all be wrong.

I have my own GPS watch and know how most of the time it is very accurate.

In theory, the idea will be excellent, but it's the odd one that goes wrong which can through a curve ball.
