Kris Kin for me as i had £ 50 ew at 12/1 on the morning of the race - big bet for me in my teenage years

performance wise ....i like Sea Bird in 1965 , a horse which showed himself to be freak he looked in the derby when following up in devastating fashion in the arc

the master of Epsom at his best.

No other jockey of that era would have won on him.

Looking at the decs for Saturday, none of the names make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, like most of those mentioned above do, who knows though, maybe in 20 years time one of them might...!

I remember reading something that Tony Morris wrote, which in essence said that it wasn't really important what a horse had achieved prior to the race, but that Epsom was the start of his career and that he would be judged on everything he achieved subsequently. I've probably paraphrased that quite badly but maybe you know what I mean, that great horses announce themselves at Epsom. Is there one this year? Not sure there is, but on the assumption that horses with 'bad' pedigrees don't win the Derby, Giovanni Canaletto fits this profile very well although I've missed the fancy prices and will let him win unbacked at 8s.

In his day Lester was so much part of the Derby story so it has to be one of his.
Nijinsky for me,the best horse I've ever seen.

Financially - Shaamit.  Got word in the morning that William Haggas was quietly confident it would win.  My old man got the word from his boss who is was an owner of a few horses at the time.  Most of the family and friends were on it.  Nothing major in terms of the amount staked but it was a good day to see it win at 14/1 in the morning.  A shame the horse didn't really go on from that win for the rest of its 3yo career.

Emotionally - Lammtarra.  One word... WOOOOOSH !!

Life Lucky.

I backed High Rise too but in somewhat different circumstances than you.

I was staying in a B&B in Penzance during a long walk on the SW Coast trail.

At my table at breakfast was a retired bookie and his wife.(It was his birthday as it turned out).

I listed all the reasons why to play High Rise.He listened attentively then looked at me for what seemed a long time

as if he could read my mind and said in his broad cockney accent words to the effect that my reasoning was sound but

that there was one thing needed that was far more important.'What ya gotta 'ave is bottle' he said.

It was as if he'd seen right through me and knew I only had a fiver on.So that morning I put another fiver on,that was

the extent of my 'bottle' in those days! The rest is history.

I was still a School Cardiff but saw him win the Leger at Donny.
I was indeed Foxy, obviously its hard to compare so no point arguing as we all have our favourities.
Re Nijinsky I remember Lester being quoted as saying "he could win the nunthorpe" and he always puts Sir Ivor at the top of his pile but I think that's blinkered due to him making such a Horlicks of the Arc on Nijinsky.

Success Days reminded me of Silver Patriach and was a good price. Nobody thought it would stay but Jeremy was a great jumps sire which had produced Cheltenham(undlulating track) winners including Our Conor(rip). The great damsire was Fairy King who had produced a list of Derby winners as long as my toenails. The form was great too, it had beaten a fair yardstick by 10l.

It was Wednesday and bookies were slashing the price to 16/1, maybe because it was grey and they knew. I had to hunt around for a free bet offer on the interweb, there wasn't much time. The rest was history.

1990 must have been a shocking year if roger Charlton could win both the derby and the French derby.

Thanks Foxy. I thought as it's Derby week it might be nice to reminisce a little. Biggest surprise is that we've had 100 posts and all of them have been good, it hasn't been hijacked by the usual suspects. Still time of course.....!

the biggest hard luck story I ever had in the derby was in 2006

some of you may remember atavus from the forum well atavus was a good judge of top class racing and we would speak often on the phone about it,well back in 2006 he never shut up about dragon dancer and how he would win the derby prices around 200 were available on betfair so in the weeks leading up to derby day we would nibble away win only as he thought defeat was out of the question, come derby day you could have 100 with a couple of firms so I topped it up each way just in case he had got it wrongWinkwell he did get it wrong the horse was beaten a short head.

does anybody still have contact with atavus last time we spoke he was going to Africa to help the less well of as far as I know he is still out there.

The Charlton wins were interesting but were perhaps due to the fact that Jeremy Tree got the best of the Juddmonte yearlings until he retired and Charlton inherited the 2 Derby winners from him. These days Fabre and Stoute seem to be getting the best ones although Gosden got Frankel. 5 years ago it would have been Sir Henry Cecil. I don't subscribe to the view that they were sub standard winners in 1990. Juddmone had Sanglamore, Quest For Fame and Deploy at the same time.

Excellent thread, Chaps.  Sorry not to have contributed anything so here goes.

My first Derby I remember very vaguely was Crepello (aged 5!!)- I was apparently at the previous year too but remember nothing of it. My favourite Derby winner was Santa Claus as it was the first one I backed on "form" and told everyone at School it would win.  It also carried my favourite colours of Black and Green - I backed everything wearing Black and Green in those days - apparently one of my uncle's books (Cope's?) said that these two colours were the unluckiest colours - I was an early "contrarian"Wink.  Things got even better for my colours the following year when form and colours collided again.

It has been downhill ever since, although I did back Generous as I couldn't remember seeing a single plain colour set of colours that didn't belong to a Lord and his being all Green.  That was the start of a lifelong infatuation with plain coloursCrazy but that's another story.

nb - I am all over Diamonds and Rubies for the OaksWink

Great thread everyone.
In 1982 I was young, free & singleish. I went to my first Derby.
I backed Golden Fleece at 7/2, I remember he was negative as he
was such a big horse & the going was firm.
The second was Touching Wood, who subsequently won the St Leger,
who I backed at 7/1. (It was so much easier then!!)
My mate who was a Willie Carson fan was shouting  " where's Jalmood"
I said "just coming round Tattenham Corner!!"
I was arrogant in those days when I backed a winner.

My fav Derby was 1988 because that was when I first started going to the bookies and placing bets. I got an ante-post tip for
Luca Cumani's Kahyasi to win the Derby just before he ran at Lingfield. I got 25/1 and I also backed him to win at Lingfield (he was fav, won at 5/6).

But despite winning cosily he wasn't really fancied come Derby day. There were a few others considered bigger players that year including impressive Dante winner Red Glow, runaway Chester winner Unfuwain (the mighty Nashwan's brother), Minster Son (who went on to win the Leger), and the Guineas winner Doyoun.  So Kayhasi was an easy to back 11/1 but ran a tremendous race coming with a strong run on the outside to get past a battling Glacial Storm, with Doyoun finishing 3rd.

Great memories. Ray Cochrane was my hero that day !

This thread is absolute gold.  My first Derby was the 'John Batten' Derby in 1997.  Me and my dad stony broke having a picnic on the hill.  My dad won enough on Ya Malak in the dash to get us our grandstand ticket in.  Benny the Dip won.  What a race I just remember a flash of white and the grey Silver Patriarch with Pat chasing him down. Fell in love with racing then and now I'm a lifer.  Didn't back Benny though, had Romanov each way and I still remember the following Monday being summoned to the staff room at school forgetting I'd tipped my p.e teacher Romanov each way.  He opened the door, gave me a cheeky wink and said 'Well done you've got me out of the doghouse this month' still no idea what he'd done but obviously the Romanov dosh made amends.  I love the Derby.
