Given your criteria it has to be Authorized because I won several shedloads of money.

Should have been Authorised as that was a 6-month AP job but i was at a wedding that day, so only saw it next morning and obv not quite same impact, so will go with Slip Anchor, which was a stunning performance to me at an impressionable age (as opposed to old and hard-to-impress these days!)...those peach colours just seemed to stand out desp the overcast day.
|
|
By:
prob apricot rather than peach
|
|
By:
because the papers print the colours anymore duncan we don't get an accurate description but I am pretty sure lord howards colours were officially apricot.kris in the same colours was one of the first horses I was impressed with.

Fruterie - like a complete mug I backed Tenby that year!
|
|
By:
tenoso my one and only derby so fitting the pigg battered it home, england beat scotland at wembley that night, i backed florida son [j hanson] in the mile and a quarter handicap at 25,s
,must row in with slip anchor though and for all the wrong reasons for most ,id have thought sharastani,s would get a mention probably the most talked about derby of all time |
|
By:
fruiterie
I also backed commander in chief for the derby after he won the museum stakes at the craven meeting but I have to be honest after his run at York I wasn't anywhere near as keen, thankfully back then a bet was a bet it was very hard to get out of one. |
|
By:
I'm certain someone on here will have a list of each Derby winner's official rating, but those who must be amongst the poorest must include High Rise and that utterly dreadful Shaamit.

Reference Point.
Cauthen at his finest. |

I have the Sporting Life Derby Day newspaper when Tenby was 4/5 favourite.
Every year I take it out an re-read it. It helps me oppose the current favourite. All except one tipster tipped Tenby. Group Think shortens the favourite's odds. Sea-Bird was the best. I was 14 at the time, saw it on black and white TV, ran out to the kitchen to tell my parents I had seen the best horse ever. |

Poor Derby winners equal big odds.

Financially, Lammtarra.
Loved Seat the Stars also. |
|
By:
gosden cant have had a runner that year or didnt fancy it to beat tenby if he did, always remember him been interviewed on ch 4 and saying tenby will come down the hill like a ball going around a barrell and pish up,

For sheer "wow" factor still seen nothing like Slip Anchor in 1985, to make the running is one thing but to be so far clear rounding Tattenham Corner was jaw-dropping, completely galloped them into the ground, I had been "all over" Shadeed but remember clapping Slip Anchor down the straight.
For profit reasons Commander In Chief one of the very few real results I've had in the race over the years. |
|
By:
kris kin would be one of the worst.
|
|

There are probably an equal number of poor winners as there are exceptional winners...I never really rated Blakeney,Moreston,Snow Knight,Kahyasi,Dr Devious to name but a few.

High Rise. Was with a lady at the time who lived on the tenth floor, we were happy and had to back it. Came into the race unbeaten and won at 20/1. She bought a cd to celebrate, it was John Barry's first non-soundtrack album, 'The Beyondness of Things', still love that album. Happy Days.

Nashwan
1989 was one of my favourite years watching the horses, plus I was only 20 and life was good. I had £50 on him in the 2000G's at 3-1. I then backed him A/P for the Derby £100 at 5/4 I'm sure he was bigger during the run up to the race. In those days I was earning about £120per week. Loved the horse loved those days. |
|
By:
LOL,
,sat here thinking about the likes of nashwan troy shergar reference point slip anchor and was wondering how even todays jocks could get these beat no doubt they,d give it a good go, ![]() ![]() |

True story
I thought Slip Anchor was a certainty for the Derby, but I was living in Amsterdam at the time, so obviously it was difficult to get a bet on, no bookies, phone account or internet etc, so in the words of Balldrick, I had a cunning plan ![]() I took a flight to Heathrow in the morning, placed £400 at 9/4 in Ladbr*kes, Baker Street, had a decent lunch, then a return flight in the afternoon. The fun part of the story is my wife (now an ex) didn't know anything, I simply went to work as usual and got back a little late (overtime . A couple of my mates were in on it just in case she called me at work, but she didn't. If she had found out, I would have been gelded ....... twice ! ...... once for not telling her and the next for putting £400 on a horse. I didn't even know the result until I got home and listened to the sports report on the radio. |
|
By:
It won easy Andrew. Just in case you've never seen it.
|
|
By:
Andrew that's one of the best stories i've ever read on the forum...did she ever get to find out ??
|
|
By:
Shirley Heights, backed it.Only time ive been to Epsom.

|
By:
erhaab saw him win the dante having 200 quid on him and rolled it all up on the derby (bit to much drink and bravado at york races)

Steamship - yes, many times
![]() Posy, i'm fairly sure she never did, she would have let me know if she had ![]() Some on here may think it was deceitful, and up to a point they would be correct, but perhaps punters would understand my predicament, specially considering it was a certainty (aren't they all). My ex knew I gambled, but thought it was the odd 10 or 20 and many times it was in those days, so can you imagine me waking up and telling her I was going to take a day off work, fly to London, put £400 on a horse, have lunch and fly back several hours later .... oh and have a nice day ![]() |
|
By:
When i was 19 my mother found a bookmakers ticket in my golf bag, you know what mothers are like, turned your bedroom upside down looking for things
![]() anyway she found the said ticket which was a grand on rattle along, my man cauthen on board at 6/1, won at 13/2. watched race which i think was at sandown at perth races. told her the boss at my work was a heavy gambler and that i put all his bets on for him and collected the winnings. ![]() When i collected my winnings the hills manager drove me to the bank, collected the money and handed it over to me. |

By:
Sea the Stars for me, never seen a horse pull for it's head for the whole race and still gallop away and win races. Won the Derby then went on to win the Arc even ridden by Mick Kinane who was an old bloke compared to a lot of the jockey he was riding against. Gone on to be a top sire.

By:
I know this won't be popular, but Shahrastani for me - they all started from the same place, pointed in the same direction, and when they reached the post, he was in front.
The fact that one of the best horses ever always gets overlooked because an over rated flat track bully couldn't get past him is as unfair as it is ridiculous, imho... |

ascot sandown and the Rowley mile flat tracks ?

The Minstrel, the first one I can remember & an awesome finish fought out between Lester & Carson, concreted my lifelong fixation with the (flawed) genius & supreme win at all costs mentality of Lester Piggott!!
|

Of those I have seen live on the day..
1) Shergar 2) Slip Anchor 3) Troy |
|
By:
I had my biggest bet on Golden Fleece - what wasn't said by the OP was that it was stone last coming round the corner ...but then it started to pick up...
I also remember seeing Teenoso win a 1m 2f race at Haydock, desperate day, teeming rain, slogged through the mud.... and i remember saying to the future wife coming out at the end of the day...."we can forget about that for the derby"... |
|
By:
Too early in the season, some say !! but I just see the Derby as a wonderful race which forms great memories. Most of us can visualize many Derby finishes but other Group 1 races don't stick so well. Sea Bird, Troy, The Minstrel, Galileo, list goes on. Can't wait for another big show.
