Although I’d largely like to see the union stay in tact, there’s part of me that would like it if they just fckd off. I’ve lived and worked in Scotland for a couple of years in the past and they really don’t see how the whole ‘auld enemy’ stuff is their heads not ours and most English people barely give them a second thought.
The nationalists need to face the fact they won’t have the pound as England isn’t about to carry an independent Scotland as it would be political suicide for any party to agree to that. But snp plays to the plebs who watch Braveheart like it’s the History channel. Plus Edinburgh relies on the financial institutions there such as Standard Life and if the majority of their business is in England then that’s where they’ll go. Also Royal Bank Of Scotland will up sticks seen as it’s owned by the UK tax payer, probably all becoming Natwest. I’d like to see the true figures re the Barnett formula etc to see if union with Scotland is a net gain or loss for England. My bet would be on a loss. If they do go independent I reckon within a generation we’ll have another 1707 moment but instead of bankrupting themselves on failed colonies it will be due to failed socialism. The big big plus would be how much harder it would be for a labour government to gain power in Westminster, especially once the constituency boundaries are made fairer. But which ever way the vote goes they’ll be fighting among themselves for years, but if it’s a No, it will be fun to see just what sore losers the nationalists are ![]() |

Pawras, great post.
You need to be English in a room full of Scots watching England play football, (been there!) to see how much big a chip they have on their shoulders. |
By:
What I found interesting was hearing from a blike living in one of the islands saying he was voting for the union because SNP, while wanting devolution for Scotland were not keen on devolving power to a more local level.
By:
blike = bloke.
By:
England play football fcuk me that must have been decades ago.
By:
it will not be good for scottish racing if the vote goes yes

Pawras, great post.
It's not a great post it's p1sh. There will be a currency union as it will be completely impossible to deal with Scotland's share of debt including pension payments without one. Financial institutions can just open regulated subsidiaries in England, there is no need to physically relocate. I worked for a multinational financial PLC that wasn't regulated - it just has subsidiaries in various countries that were regulated by the appropriate body for the country. Whatever happens I can see Labour getting a hiding at the next election - their entire Scottish policy is to make as many people as possible reliant on the state for a living and listening to the house tory Alasdair Darling doing his master's bidding makes me want to puke. |
By:
Dave we'll have to agree to disagree, there won't be a currency union even if we end up taking Scotland's share of the debt. For political reasons if nothing else. Independence we'll mean they carry their own arses for the first time.
By:
If say 80% of Standard Life's customers are in England do you really see it staying in Edinburgh long term post independence?? Get real.
By:
if i was scottish i would vote yes as the UK has gone down the pan
they can then leave the eec.get there own currency and stop all the eastern european and third world immigration they can also then elect a tory government which has a completely scottish agenda |
By:
Standard life has been shipping jobs out to India for years. The only reason it still has jobs left in the uk is because it needs the skills.

H for T another example of the sh*te you spout.

YES vote isn't about alec salmond, its about Scotland,s future you will get what you deserve(sounds like a threat) |
By:
a divided nation if the polls are anything to go by
By:
I Voted Yes last week, if the media was not so biased in favour of the labour **** it would already be in the bag.
i have a feeling Yes is already in front as they mst recent poll is by an outfit who always underestimate SNP and/or Yes. they were out by 28 per cent at the last scottish elections. I will still love the english when we become a real country again. ![]() |
By:
atkins, Scotland is richer than England, we have been subsidising the likes of you
for the last 100 years.you will have to stand on your own 2 feet in a few weeks time. |

Willie's a NO man btw, he has a brain.
By:
i know Willie is a NO, and he does not have a brain, he is a bankrupt who has half the business community in
aberdeen chasing after him for money. great player though. |
By:
I dont know what Aberdonia is on, but I'd like some.
By:

By:
OP - 'under the control of a certain Alec Salmond'
Notwithstanding that he's done a pretty decent job as FM, there is absolutely no guarantee (in fact I would bet against it) that SNP in it's current form and with current policies would win a Scottish General Election and I'm speaking as an ardent YES voter who's voted for SNP in every election (general, local, European) since I turned 18 many moons ago |
By:
just take my word for it loper, although the facts are out there.
i may show you later when i come back from my game of 5s. one thing to note, You will lose a 3rd of your land mass and have the GDP of Italy when we phuck off. ![]() Nigel Farage will be pm in 10 years and there will be race riots all over England, that is what my crystal ball is telling me. |
By:
dr atkins - your knowledge of the border policies of EU member states needs a bit of brushing up...and for students, OAPs, supporters of the EU and many other groups within society I believe the clamour to cross the 'border' will be in the other direction
By:
dream on atkins you'd be better building your wall around various parts of the midlands
By:
Most of the comment on this forum by English contributors seems to be gained from reading that instrument of knowledge THE DAILY MAIL.This rag last made a truthful statement about Scotland when the " old king was on the throne".
It is a lying deceitful excuse for a newspaper and its only use is a substitute for Andrex in emergences. Why anyone in Scotland buys this rag is a mystery. |
By:
atkins, you have not got a clue, we will leave it at that.
By:
so will you have the euro ? you cant have the pound horse racing bhb wont have no control over horse racing in scotland
By:
we have had the debate over the pound for 18 months in scotland, i want our own currency but it would have scared potential yes voters.
Osborne will be begging us to be part of the £, infact he will try and tie us into a deal for at least 10 years. you will find out soon enough as when Yes wins, all the bluffs will mean nowt. |
By:
Aberdonia,
My 1k of pounds sterling guaranteed by the Bank of England is here ready and waiting to be matched by your 1k of pounds Scottish guaranteed by The Bank of Scotland, obviously. |
By:
At least we'd then be able to put our clocks forward an hour if the Scots vote yes.
By:
how much have you got on the Yes vote aberdonia?
