It depends on the horse. He was ready to commit on SL as it prefers to come with a late run, it was also oc stepping up in distance.
|
|
By:
he could have sent her on 2.5 F from home but didnt.......that was his mistake........maybe he was holding it for one blast
this horse looks a miler to me and they should have stuck to that |
|
By:
It was a poor ride. The crux of the matter is that he shouldn't have let Buick come round him and hold him in. He had plenty of horse under him to prevent this but didn't.That indecision led to him having nowhere to go.
Having said that she wouldn't have won anyway. To my eyes she didn't stay. |
|
By:
He deliberately stayed in though, taking the risk. He didn't bank on Buick being so ruthless.
|
|
By:
Hughes had the choice to keep it simple by staying wide,to get the best chance of a clear run.Or coming inside and hoping for a gap to come.It was asking for trouble to come inside when there was no need to.I can't see how that isnt obvious to anyone.
|
|
By:
He decided his best chance of winning was to take the risk and wait.
|
|
By:
It's not really a question of being ruthless,Cider. At Goodwood most horses hang towards the far rail. It's a fact of life.
Something the "King of Goodwood" is presumably aware of. |
|
By:
He was wrong then ,Cider.

ffs toronto you could say that about every runner, every rider could have been coming wide.
How many of the riders came wide? oh go on give the that ponk of him being on the best horse so she should have been ridden on the outside away from the pack. How many horses win by bursting through the pack??? phucking thousands. How many horses run taper out by being pulled wide???phucking thousands. Does your brain only operate with two levers?? |
|
By:
imv Buick knew what he was doing, he rode his race to beat Hughes. The other horse coming out created the sandwich effect, but Buick tried to ride Hughes out of the race, and succeeded.
|

By:
Hughes is a top jockey imo. Gave Wentworth a peach of a ride yesterday !
|
|
By:
An excusable mistake but still a mistake, not a well thought out tactical risk or unlucky.
|
|
By:
You think Buick thought if he "took out" the fav he'd win this Group 1 ?
Interestting concept. ![]() |

He did give Wentworth a "peach" yesterday,Facts.
Pity he didn't on his previous 3 outings. ![]() |

Those wouldn't really be the ideal tactics for a horse with the speed to win the 1000gns but trying 10f for the first time against others that have proved they could stay it and/or older horses. |

You're far too shrood for this place,Facts.

dettori thinks to much is made of jockeyship and in 9 out of 10 cases a horse would win whoever rode it , mind you he never said a word when he was top jock for 15 years,

Did you watch the race AG....he wasnt WIDE on the outside,he was sitting just on the outside of the pack. Then he had a choice stay clear of trouble and in touch or go inside and hope for a gap to open.Yes and 10 times more races are lost by going to where trouble is likely.Gabriel it dosnt make you one of the insiders or in the know to be on here constantly licking everyone in racings backside. It just makes you a gullible sad attention seeker

Nothing to do with Wentworth struggling on firmer ground then?? lets blame Hughes because the horse is a tad more tentative with firmer ground? |

"SO CONFIDENT ABOUT lANTERN - SHE'LL LOVE THE EXTRA TWO FURLONGS" "I am riding a wonderful filly who I think is going to love tackling the stiffest test of her career" "I HAVE ALWAYS SAID SKY LANTERN NEEDS A MILE AND A QUARTER" "I'M CONVINCED SHE'LL RELISH AN EXTRA TWO FURLONGS" Do these quotes (all from his column in the Post today) suggest he was worried about her stamina ? |

Jesus Tonto, this loss has effected you badly, perhaps you need a break. Who`s backside am i licking? You just expect to pick the horse with best form and hold your phucking hand out. Hughes was delaying his run, he does this 90% of the time!! have you ever seen him at work before this race?? ![]() |

Are you seriously suggesting the ground wasn't fast yesterday ? ![]() |

Good ground FB - showers in the morning. You know the difference, or are you saying good ground is actually good/firm in disguise??

Buick said in his post race interview he wanted to track Hughes in the race. So he is following the short priced fav, the best horse going into the race. He sees him tuck back in, what's he going to do? Thinks to himself this is my chance, he won't be getting out now!

At least the racing insider apologists are getting a nice reward for turning a blind eye and praising everyone whatever they do.Poor old Gabrial does it because he thinks it makes him sound smart.....just like Jimbo!!

How many times has Sky Lantern run at 10f before today flyingbolt?
If Hughes was so certain she would stay then on a course where runners often find trouble when coming from behind, why didn't he bounce her out of the stalls and make all then? My guess is that he hoped and felt she would stay but still knew he had to ride her in the best possible way to try to ensure that she did. |
|
By:
FB you know the official ground was good(gf in places)-
Every other race was run SLOWER than the standard. Are you saying it was good/firm ground yesterday? Remember it was good(good/soft) on Thursday and they were running close to the standard.Every rider was saying there was no jarring in the ground yesterday yet you beg to differ. |

Err,never. ![]() Your next comment is so far beneath your usual solid arguments I'm astounded you have typed that. ![]() Obviously he's not going to make the running on a hold up horse. I've brought to your attention his comments. They don't sound as though he had any doubts imo. He was wrong. |

By:
I stopped listening to what jockeys say in 1974.
The official going report is of no interest to me. The 4th race was run faster than standard. It was good to firm. |
|
By:
Flyingbolt i stopped listening to you at 18:05
It was not good/firm because if it was Wentworth would not have won. ![]() |

Hughes is pathetic , he is not even man enough to accept the **** ride he gave Sky Lantern - the bloke is a jerk. If he accepted he made a bad ride I would have a bit more respect for him but he is to proud of himself to admit it. Reminds me of **** Tom Q when he nearly lost Frankel his unbeaten record by riding two finishes at Royal Ascot in 2011. He panicked when the pacemaker went clear but yet again he was not man enough to accept he balls it up. It was only Frankel's supreme brilliance that won him the race.

By:
So obviously if he's on a hold up horse trying 10f for the first time flyingbolt he's still going to ride it the best way he feels to ensure she got 10f which was my exact point.
Just because he felt she would get the trip doesn't mean she would, so my point was in response to the person saying Hughes could have sent her on 2 and a half furlongs out when that was always going to be very unlikely considering she's a hold up horse running farther than she ever has before. She wasn't even hitting the front from that far out in her mile races let alone a 10f one. You pointed out what Hughes had said in his column and that's fair enough but he still didn't know for sure if she would stay and so rode her accordingly, which didn't include kicking for home from a long way out. |
|
By:
IMA
I don't think anyone is suggesting he should "kicked for home a long way out".I'm saying he should have held his position if he was so confident the filly would stay. AG Yes obviously Wentworth wouldn't act on good to firm. Funny that he's previously won on it,they have never run him on anything softer than good,he's by a fast ground sire a nd his dam is by a fast ground sire. Over to you. |
|
By:
I think I can see what the problem is now flyingbolt.
When you say you don't think anyone is suggesting he should "kicked for home a long way out" you mean you didn't say that and that's fair enough but you would be wrong in saying you don't think anyone is saying that because that's exactly what I was responding to where someone did actually say that and even mentioned 2.5 furlongs as where he could have kicked on from. If you scroll up to my post at 17:27 I've actually quoted it being said and then responded to it but appreciate it's not always realistic to read everything in a thread. |
|
By:
So does that mean you agree that he should have held his position when Buick ranged up on his outside given that he was so confident of her stamina........or not ?
![]() |
|
By:
I have only seen the race once so wouldn't like to comment for sure but it looked to me on a one time watch as the only reason he wasn't able to hold his position was because of Buick knocking him back inside, unless you mean at an earlier point in the race but again I can't really comment until I see it again.
Holding your position and being able to hold your position are two different things. |
|
By:
It's all about opinions.
imo he had plenty of horse under him to hold his position without stretching her and didn't. Nice talking to you. |
