Dont know who you are wildman or why your so aggresive but i rarely have more than 15 % back on here.(dont know how those that have it all back make it pay.)at epsom i layed £1000 win £350 place the derby fav and £750 the odds on winner on here and had less than £300 in back bets.in the last 5 years i havent had one customer complaint and if theres a friendlier team than stan and chris i havent seen them.

I have read your posts here and to me you are the antithesis of what a bookmaker should be.
I am a long time racecourse punter now back in Ireland, the bookmakers I admired were the ones that took a chance backed up their views and accepted bad days, you seem to want risk free bookmaking which removes the need for bookmakers. The Irish rings are now sadly populated by gutless traders that won't take a bet and if they do insult you by trading the lot at profit. A vibrant betting ring is essential for racing but the bookmakers in these rings must be prepared to take risks if they don't what is the point of the betting ring. Not betting to standard each way terms is villainous and wrong and will turn some racecourse punters into betting shop punters. The nonsense of getting punters to bet with ye and then promptly exporting it to your deadliest rival is lost on Regit but factmachine seems to realise that this short term gain is killing racecourse betting. |
|
By:
it's at least two years too late but at long last a few racecourses [ with others hanging onto their coat tails ] are finally making a stand about racecourse bookmaker behaviour
as I have the priviledge of being sent [ no doubt in error ] some of the consultation reposts that some twenty or so individuals wailing about this decision have sent in .one has even had the brass neck to complain that if he cannot be allowed to .bet 1/6th each way in 20 runner handicaps and 1/5th each way in 15 runner handicaps it will cost him 35 grand a year |
|
By:
ADGE - I think that just about puts an end to the 'we're altering terms to give the customer choice' argument....don't you agree ?
|
|
By:
not quite , mug, they still have the possible choice to take the win only price but , of course , that will be available elsewhere too

some interesting points(dont see the need for nastiness).
yes i now try to bet over when i can. when i had a couple of betting shops i regularly stood horses for more than most books do now.once lost £26000 on 3 £50 dbles and a £50 treble and if last suspect hadnt got up to beat mr snugfit(i think) i would have had to go to the bank. get on well with factmachine but i have invested a lot of money and dont really see how i run my business has anything to do with anybody else and object to being told by the racecourses how to run my business.i bet proper ew terms probably more than most.frankels race at ascot and big bucks at aintree good examples. i dont really understand why it matters what happens to your bet once accepted as in the olden days it was probably traded with a back line bookmaker at a bigger price. i dont regard the exchanges as rivals as they allow me lay horses at smaller prices and back back at bigger. if im honest im glad i dont know u as i would be dissapointed if someone i knew had your thoughts. |
|
By:
adge im not going down the ew again but a bookmaker rang me with a fair point.if your allowed to offer better odds and not just the standard who decides if 1/3 123 is better or worse than 1/5 1234.
|
|
By:
It was always bad practise dressed up as offering the customer a choice to 'compete' with exchanges.....now fully exposed as exploiting the unwary with profit in mind.
|
|
By:
regit
I don't regard exchanges as rivals ? they are eating away at us every day, we pay fortunes in tax and other expenses whilst those on the exchanges pay nothing the ring has many punters looking at our boards then looking at the exchange price to see which is the best, now I don't blame them for that but I cant see how anybody racecourse bookmaker can come out with a statement like they are not our rivals. |

I also wondered if 1/5 123 in 7 runners was considered inferior or superior to 1/4 12. If your horse wins or is 2nd then 1/4 odds better but if its 3rd its not the case. Some do offer 1/5 123 in 7 runner races now. |
|
By:
My understanding is that the fraction must be at least the standard terms one but you can increase the number of places paid if you wish.

jimnast the exchanges are obviously rivals in the terms you describe but so are the offices.but there here and i would rather use them to help my profitability and thus my business than just blame them for everything.the exchanges allow me to take bets i couldnt have taken before,to go out with less staff and so keep my exes down.they also give me a better tissue so that when i commence betting im less likely to make a mistake pricing up.i use them if i cant get on with the offices when punting and def. when im arbing.i think there in a bit of trouble with bots keeping them running as layers go skint but im not going to be hypocritical about them.i could manage without them if i had to but would vote to keep them.
|
|
By:
im sure your right wassy and the associations will go along with the racecourses but id love to see a challenge and see how they would say 1.the law of the land is wrong 2.argue that 1/5 1234 is better than 1/3 123.the specialist witnesses would have degrees in oxford and cambridge and jockey would become famous.

REGIT - THAT'S A CHANGE IN POSITION...LAST WEEK YOU 'NEEDED' THE EXCHANGES...NOW YOU COULD 'MANAGE' WITHOUT THEM.....HOPEFULLY NEXT WEEK YOU'LL WANT TO GET RID.
![]() JIMNAST- GOOD POST...AGREE 100% WASNOT - I'M NOT SURE WHETHER 1/6 1.2 IS BIGGER THAN 1/4 1.2...SURELY THE SIX IS BIGGER/BETTER THAN THE FOUR ?.....THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM |

GENTLEMAN,PLEASE FORGIVE MY OLD PAL REGIT FOR STILL BELIEVING THE EXCHANGES ARE GOOD FOR ONCOURSE BOOKMAKING,STOCKHOLM SYNDROME IS A COMMON CONDITION WHEN COMMISSION AGENTS LEAVE THE ILLUMINATI AND REGIT MUST BE GIVEN TIME TO MAKE A FULL RECOVERY

a secret ballot wether to keep or get rid of exchanges oncourse would i.m.o. not come out with the result youd want fact and mug.if that happened obviously the majority would be wrong.

the offices are of little or no threat to us,just like the tote, now betfred is a different matter once he gets going.what is your view on a bookmaker having the entire bet back in the exchanges even before the punters ticket has popped out ,if the full amount wasn't matched the punter couldn't have the bet ?this is the circus it has become. |

exactly Jimnast and those sort of operators speed up the demise of the ring everytime they set foot on the racecourse..... they can't see it, just want to arb the next £........ |
|
By:
Regit,of course a ballot (why secret?) would result in keeping the exchanges as unfortunately the ring is now full of clueless sychophants who can't see further than the end of their nose, but please don't tell me its a good thing,i don't blame punters for using them one bit but they are the worst thing ever to happen to the on course market.
The amusing thing is that even some of the early "pioneers" who couldn't wait to get an advantage realise that now everyone's on them that they quite what they were cracked up to be,lol. |

Im off out today and i dont really want to get into an argument but my opinion of the exchanges hasnt changed that much over the years.would the ring be stronger if they hadnt happened?yes without a doubt.BUT i do think all they have done is speed up the decline.
before buying and selling there were only a few strong books.the offices and the larger punters bet with them, some kept the money some earned off it.when buying and selling started there allready wasnt enough money to go round on the quiet days.betting in general was in decline.before i got out of betting shops there were already a lack of young people coming in and those that did played the bandits and bet on football. when the exchanges first arrived i was lucky(thanks to rlyl)to be one of the first to get going and like him(older and not so ambitious)used the money to buy up and improve my positions.over the years i have continued to use them but less and less.rlyl once told me you usually get 6 months at something then everyone catches up.it took slightly longer and ribero is right were all paying alot with no edge(electronic boards another example)but i believe the exchanges have had their day, especially on the horses.the reasons i.m.o. are 1.the exchanges are like a giant roulette wheel and after every spin someone pays and money leaves the market. 2.its boring,i still arb but only when i have an interest in the actual event. 3.the offices have fought back brilliantly.i still keep a couple of accounts arb free just for the amazing value.money back if the derby fav wins for example. i dont know whether the ring will ever recover midweek but i genuinely believe if you stopped the ring using the exchanges it wouldnt be as competitive and the punters that are coming back would know this.i repeat that from my point of view regarding my pitches(mid range for people who dont know me)i am very optimistic and as long as the sun shines and the fields hold up people will continue to come. just to answer a couple of points.jimnast i dont know anyone who has it all back.i cant see how they make it pay.i dont have a problem with the principle of it ,its their business but not laying the bet till its matched is disgracefull and surely must impact on their business.ribero your excellent pitches mean that your playing a different game to most of us(i dont mean this negatively, there bought and paid for)but the exchanges have definately made it easier for everyone to compete. finally while the exchanges might rightly have their critics 10 bookmakers will turn up today at thirsk(might be enough business for 10).unfortunately they will run 20 pitches under different names.if you look hard you might find a bookmaker WITH ONE PITCH THAT HE OWNS BETTING IN HIS OWN NAME.one things for certain it wont be me im off to the dales to walk. ![]() |
