Have the pitches at Cheltenham increased in value ,after the better results. I have not read of many bookmakers complaining on hear. Perhaps the £1500 pitch fee turned out to be good value.

Pal of mine worked 3 days in tatts, didnt bother working the Friday, thats who good it is!
By:
attending cheltenham is an ego trip, bin there dun that, I know of 5 tatts bookmakers getting out, no value.
By:
there were nine empty pitches in tatts on gold cup day and between twelve and seventeen missing on the other days.
that possibly answers the question regarding tatts. |
By:
barry, the trouble with many newly fangled bookies is they think that because they
spend a bit of cash on buying pitches all they have to is then turn up, bit of chalk in hand put a line down the board and punters will queue to part with their hard earned, you and I know it does not work like, that never has, if one has not got one of the premier positions to trade from bookmaking has never ever been the bed of roses punters seem to think it is. Good luck. |

The staff at cheltenham are issued with pogo sticks to try and keep there exes down a tad.

So did the the take at Cheltenham hold up enough for the majority of books to go back next year? im assuming that he did apart from in the back lines from the comments on here.
By:
my take was 3.5k down on day 1 [ only 6 races ] , 1.5k up on day 2 ,
3k up on day 3 [ extra race ] and the same on day 4. so all being equal it held up well |
By:
Davy, unless you were betting off a good pick the expenses would have killed you. Quite understandably, you won't get anybody coming on here and saying that, as it will depress the value of said picks to less than zero.
Look at the AGT website... and the number of Aintree picks for sale. It amounts to 11% of those that are in the numbers. ![]() |
By:
Why have all these aintree picks , number 80-120 suddenly come up for sale, my understanding was that the line on the saturday was relatively equal after about number 30.
By:
Adge - thanks, would be interesting to know how the poorer picks held up over there.

It is a statement of the obvous that better picks take more money than the inferior ones and some a great deal more - and that's the way it should be. This recent agreement between bookmakers and racecourses highlights even more a point I have previously made here that the fee for the betting badge should/must be graduated to put in place a fairer system. I quote once again the example of pitches 1 and 100 at Royal Ascot paying the same amount each day - an absolutely absurd, ridiculous and unjustifiable situation. In anticipation of any responses that point out the superior pitch might cost £80,000 and the inferior pitch £200 - that fact has absolutely no relevance whatsoever !!!!
By:
I'm sorry demo but I completely disagree about the cost of pitches being irrelevant. If the badge was graduated as you suggest then the purchaser would not have paid 80k for his pitch and the lesser pick would have paid much more than £200. You cannot change the goalposts after people have invested significant sums without good reason. The time to change any commercial arrangements was when contracts were being negotiated, not now.
By:
wasnot
just a quick question, if you owned a greasy spoon 500 yards from the savoy would you expect to pay the same rates as he savoy. |
By:
You will not be surprised to hear I also total disagree with you wassy !! I have missed these debates with you. Please dont preach to me about 'moving goalposts' - I remind you of boards on rails and even Exchanges being allowed oncourse. These two issues are perfect examples of nothing being forever which is what you seem to be implying to the commercial arrangements. You have in a weaker moment accepted that the agreement/contract put in place is in some respects flawed. The "I'm alright Jack' impression given by anyone with a vested interest including the negotiators is somewhat tainted. I make my point with no incentive to be better off, because I doubt that I would, should the warranted changes be made. If I am allowed to use an analogy - wherever you live superior houses attract the highest cost when bought and sold. When it comes to pying Council Tax do all properties pay the same amount ? Of course they dont !!
By:
That would be reflected in the purchase price Ronnie.
By:
democrat If I have PICK NO1 at ascot can I bet in PITCH No100 for £200
By:
Boards on Rails and Exchanges being allowed on course were due to changes in the law (Competition Act). We are talking about commercial arrangements. Can you point out to me at which of the numerous open meetings you raised the subject of sliding scale badge fees and what the response was from the negotiating team?

If I am Tesco, Do I allow my competitor Sainsbury's to negotiate my commercial terms for me?...... however we have come to such an arrangement that exists is farcical, each individual should be free to negotiate their own terms with a Racecourse rather than the crazy arrangement we currently have.
By:
Strange question Barry but similar to your previous response some time ago. You seem to be suggesting the very best pick might consider betting in the worst position - strange notion indeed. As for open meetings wassy and consultation wassy dont go down that road. The point has been many may times in any other profession where similar negotiations were in progress any proposals would be put before those affected before the agrement became final. Your blind loyalty wassy should not blind you from the need to be open minded, objective and receptive of constructive comments.
By:
If the situation had arisen that the racecourses had decided to give everyone their pitch purchase money back and start again with auctioning off all the pitches but with a new arrangement of sliding scales then I would accept your argument demo. Everyone then would be free to make their own valuations and invest accordingly. To suggest that it should be revisited now, after everyone has made purchases based on fixed fees, makes no sense to me at all. It is all academic anyway, as we have legally binding 40 year contracts, signed by both parties, agreeing to pay the fixed fees. It certainly could be looked at again in 40 years time though.

How some people are so easily led by others never ceases and take every word they say as gospel never ceases to amaze me... Stick with us John and we will make sure you are ok
![]() |
By:
So wassy the iniquitous charges that are applied on some days which are felt most by those with 'lesser' picks is ok by you ? Contracts have been proved not to be worth the paper they are written on so your belief that this one is different if not naive is let's say 'interesting'. Are you a susbscriber wassy to the view regarding your fellow layers in in inferior picks 'If you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen' - if so I'll reserve judgement if not then for once you and I are in the same camp. Shame I wont see you at Aintree this year - it would be an opportunity for you to buy me a drink to show there are no hard feelings !

And of Course the owners of the houses would have purchased them many years previous when the Council Tax Regime replaced the poll tax because that was identified as an unfair system.......
