By:
Just found the Sandown race that Pipedreamer won on Sept 1st.
Carried top-weight of 10st - and beat Celestial Gem 7st 11lb, comfortably, by 3 lengths, under a strong late run. Trained by Henry Candy - ridden by Phillip Waldron. 'Probably the most improved horse in training - also successful in the Bunbury Cup, by 2 lengths from Soul Singer - - and earlier came with a similar strong late run to beat Greenhill God in the Royal Hunt Cup. Previous season has won as a Sprinter at York Sandown and Wolverhampton (Turf in those days0 Loved Firm ground - to aid his trademark fast finish. |

About eight years ago, there was a thread on here with the title 'Piggot Stories'. It started off with posts solely on the exploits and 'one-liners' that Lester was reputed to have been associated with, but it later developed into a thread about the nature/ structure of horse racing as it was many years ago and some of the characters involved. The thread received acclamation both in the racing press and a national daily for the quality of the input and enthusiasm shown by the posters. This thread bears many resemblances.

Regarding Sam Hall, Sally was his neice of that i am pretty sure, her long time partner is Colin Platts who used to ride his own horses trained by Charlie Hall at Towton, nr Tadcaster. Colin was a fairly succesful amateur, he rode a bit for Ryan Jarvis in amateur races,Colin used to have a Taxi firm and other buisness interests in Batley.
David Greaves was the jock on Clear Cut, the first time he ran as a novice chaser i think he was ridden by an irish claimer P.J.Vaughan(?) who claimed 3lb. He rode a few winners on northern tracks for charlie Hall, one i do remember is a mare called Chancer. Charlie Hall used a lot of good jocks N>H. His main jock was Paddy Farrell who was badly hurt in the national, also Pat McCarron, Pat Gulwell, Colin Dukes,Jack Berry, H>J>East, Stan Hayhurst. |

By:
Paulbu, can you remember Gary Gosney, he transferred as an apprentice from Harry Wragg to Charlie Hall?
By:
Yes - I remember G Gosney riding for Wragg
G Gosney listed as with Maurice Camacho - at 8st 0lbs - in Horses In Training 1979. |
By:
^ That must have been his last season as an Apprentice.
Gosney listed as a Full Jockey, with Maurice, in 1980 - he had lost 2 pounds in weight, too. ![]() |
By:
G Gosney rode 22 winners, as an Apprentice - from 1975 to 1979.
By:
Think Steve Holland rode my fav nh horse for J.Hardy. The one and only Glanford Brigg.
By:
holland a real journeyman jockey who gave his all when getting his chance , what ever happened to him i wonder....
By:
Yes, I remember Gary Gosney, he was originally with Harry Wragg (as Onlooker says) but came north to ride in late 70s after a stint with Gavin Hunter.
Charlie Hall had retired by this time and Gosney joined Maurice Camacho (as Onlooker says)who had taken over at Towton. He had a couple of not too bad seasons with Camacho but as soon as his claim went, he fell out of favour because there was no trainer around with a bigger liking to take off a few pounds with a capable apprentice than M.C.Camacho. Gosney struggled on to the mid to late 80s on a couple of winners a year but the game was up with Camacho who was using the likes of Arthur Nesbitt and Nicky Connorton. |
