Yes he was one of Cecil's favourite horses, and came 2nd to stablemate Le Moss in the latter's first Ascot Gold Cup. Cecil was in tears, watching the old warrior limp back into the 2nd's spot in the unsaddling ring.

Can anyone recall ex-Cecil inmates over jumps?
Wellbeing was a notable one...any more? Ged - you'll kick yourself with that O'Brien horse...I'm surprised you can't recall it, but someone will get it soon, so I'll let them have the glory. |
|
By:
Correct Sam, was ridden by Paul Colquhoun that day and indeed on most of its runs, also had places at Newmarket/Newcastle/Haydock amongst others.
|
|
By:
Correct ribero1, removed from Walwyn because he refused to let Wildenstein pick a jockey of his own choice for Buckskin after Eddery had ridden it at Ascot
|
|
By:
Buckskin trained by Angel Penna in France.

- In answer to your question. NO - There is nowhere OnLine that contains these old detailed Results - You need to have all the Old Form BOOKs - as I have - - and then type them onto the Forum, manually. ------------- Re: Ian Walker. He was from the Walker family - whose business was originally Walker's Tannery, near Rose Hill footbridge. Ian Walker had a brother called Carlton - who was in charge of them developing the Last Drop Hotel - later to become Last Drop Village complex - which was later sold to one of the major Hotel/Leisure Groups. Ian Walker also trained - Go Go Gunner, and other horses, for footballer Alan Ball. |

Onlooker - did you get Mystificateur from memory?
Your books could only CONFIRM your thoughts. |
|
By:
Cheers onlooker - Cajolery was another decent one Walker trained - think Lend An Ear might still have been winning as a 13-y-o
Sam |
|
By:
No - Not the name from memory. Foetus.
I remembered the event - and I did think it was Carson - as I remembered his, not unexpectedly, 'high-pitched' interview afterwards - so I ploughed through the 78,79, and 80 books until I found it. |
|
By:
SHALL WE DANCE - and other show business horses - were trained buy Ian Walker -
for Wilfred Hyde-Whyte and Robert Morley. Great days - especially for them. ![]() |
|
By:
Foetus - Atlaal won a Lanzarote hurdle for John Jenkins, having been decent with Cecil as a 3yo.
He had Wonder Man behind him that day, and beat the same horse in a 4-runner novice chase at Ascot 3 years later. (Wonder Man started 1/4). |
|
By:
That must have taken you an eternity...I bet you were well pleased

|
By:
If Onlooker was a horse he'd definately be a stayer!
![]() |
|
By:
Thanks Ged - that was the main one I'd forgotten.
I think Jenkins may well have acquired a few of Henry's cast-offs, though probably not as successful as Atlaal. |

I was covering that meeting and remember hearing that graham rock snitched to the editor, tom kelly, about me travelling north-west and doing 'inside staff' out of work.
'the sneaky one' only had to mention it to me but he eventually 'got outside' and I went back to midlands and south before being replaced, by rock, who died a few years later, sometime after the 'chron' went bust. it was never any good after I'd gone; he and kelly brought down a great publication...! |

ged - I sent you a PM (Personal Message) - a couple of days ago.
via the 'New Community' Message thingy. Have you seen it - re: Browsers and racingppost. |

By:
And Moose Moran more recently.
|
|
By:
onlooker - no I hadn't seen it. I'll look now.
Foetus - Great Marquess was half-decent as a staying hurdler with NT-D. Sartorius won a bunch of 2 mile hcap chases at Towcester for Tim T-Jones, having won a maiden with Henry. |
|
By:
Good stuff with the ex-Henry jumpers...I totally forgot about Great Marquess, who was very disappointing over jumps considering his ability on the level.

While a good thread has the attention of so many experts...A friend of mine has a 14-y-o gelding by Local Suitor (out of an unraced mare) she bought for fun. I wanted to tell her about the blue blood in its pedigree, but wasn´t sure about what races Blushing Groom and the dam sire Vagueley Noble won - or even for that matter Local Suitor...
I know that Local Suitor won a Mill Reef stakes at two...but nothing much else - am I right? Vaguely Noble won an Arc? Blushing Groom was a champion 2-y-o in France, and fav for The Minstrel´s Derby in 1977, but finished 3rd. |
|
By:
TTO - everything right so far but I couldn't elaborate any further on what you've posted.
|
|
By:
^ TiptheOdds -
I have answered you on your 'German Thread' You appear to have possibly got your LOCAL SUITOR's mixed up.... at least the GERMAN part. |
|
By:
Local Suitor was run out of it by Kala Dancer and Law Society in that years Dewhurst when second fav, i remember he was taken apart by Shadeed in the Craven and cant remember him racing again
|
|
By:
I think Blushing Groom did the French 2yo grand slam - Morny, Papin, Salamandre, Grand Criterium. If he did, he was only the 2nd horse to do it (after My Swallow). He went off 9/4 fav for The Minstrel's Derby, but was well beaten in 3rd. Probably didn't have the stamina.
|
|
By:
Do you guys want the problematic Vincent O'Brien horse that Henry acquired yet?
I thought it was easy and I'm really surprised nobody's got it. |
|
By:
Blushing Groom also won the French "2000gns"
|
|
By:
hi onlooker think belmont bay a good horse trained by walker went to cecil after think won the queen anne at royal ascot???

Critique

By:
Anyone recall the owner?
I can't remember seeing the colours on anything else. |
|
By:
Sorry Foetus if I remember anything from those days it would be the bread and butter stuff.
Still think the first race Belmont Bay won for Cecil was the Newbury Spring Cup then maybe the Lockinge. Another question for anyone old enough to remember - did Peter Poston ever win the Lanark Silver Bell? Sam |
|
By:
Critique's owner = J Mulcahy - when with Vincent.
Is that whom you mean? |
|
By:
Enjoyable thread - will add my two bobs worth.
Lord Howard De Walden's Arden was another Cecil horse that went jumping, just after Brooks took over from Fred Winter. Ian Walker had a 7f specialist called Smackover, seem to remember seeing him winning the City of York . Saw Gunner B win the Cecil Frail at Haydock when Geoff Toft trained him. Next time I saw him in the flesh was when Haawain Sound beat in the B&H, when with Cecil and ridden by Mercer. Piggott was on the winner and everyone assumed that Shoemaker had been jocked off though it transpires that he simply wanted to ride at the big Saratoga meeting where he already had obligations. |
|
By:
I think Peter Poston DID win the Lanark Silver Bell - as unlikely as that may seem.
Probably with HOMEFIELD. |
|
By:
Sam - Critique was a solid group two horse in his pomp, and well worth his place in the top company.
I'm pretty sure he ran in an Arc for Henry. |
