Must've gone to the same place as the ones relating to a certain newspaper. If you make a living putting people away, you're well protected on here.

so lets have another go , a little softer

on sunday salisbury held their annual family race day with lots of families taking their children for an enjoyable day at the races.
as is normal they would place their £2 each way bets [ well it is salisbury ]for themselves and ask the children to pick a number and see if they can be lucky and get a winner.
well having picked their horses they look at the line of bookmakers. they see that most are 5/1 but one is showing 6/1 and can see a sign saying " each way bets a pleasure "  and has a long queue of families placing similiar bets. they join the line of happy punters and get their £2 each way bet on at 6/1

you can imagine their excitement when their horse runs well and gets third place.
they excitedly tell the children how well they've done and return to collect where they are puzzled to see people in front of them shouting and swearing with the bookmaker. being a bit put off by this behavior but still having won they eventually get to the front and the bookmaker takes their ticket and gives them their winnings of £3 [ three pounds ]

yes £3 ...when they look blank at the bookmaker , he points , triumphantly , to a small barely readable sign that says "1/12th odds each way "

they have just met jack wilson.

news of it was all round the ring at pontefract today.can you imagine how many occassional race goers he upset yesterday and how many would believe you were just the same
and when will racecourses realize that his short term greed will cost them thousands with the public not returning in the future

1/12th should be an offence imo.  He's very lucky no-one has attacked him yet.  Imagine if he had done that in the Royal Ascot Silver ring with the gang of thugs there.  Doubt many fellow books would have jumped to his defence.

the ring manager , mark ryan , had a long discussion with him after the last race , cashless.
went on for a good fifteen minutes. they went through a number of races on his computer.
probably caused because of the large number of complaints the racecourses are receiving.

anyone wanting to see him in action, he will be at stratford tonight

I've had a good long chat with him at Towcester Cashy.  I fully understand the mathematics of him beating the SP win and place on occassions even at 1/7th odds or whatever.  That is not the point.  It is the perception amongst punters that they are being conned, even if it is not the reality.  That is what will turn them away from betting with the on-course bookmakers.

We have no power to change the rules, only the Gambling Commission do.  As for inciting violence, don't be ridiculous.  I'm amazed no-one has hit him but I've never suggested anyone does for heaven's sake!

following his 1/12th odds each way to the casual racegoers and families at salisbury on sunday he can soon bask in his infamy.

the racing post are featuring his business practises. they telephoned him this morning to ask him to put his side of things and got a firm no comment.although when they read out to him the theme of the article he gave some replies.
amusingly , when the photographers , turned up at stratford tonight he hid behind the next door joint. unfortunately for him , his wife who was loving the attention , took a bet and he had to press the buttons and the photographers then took advantage.

look out for the article later this week. i just hope the piece is well balanced.
oh , and the first race at stratford , a 14 runner hurdle , he was 1/6th odds

WasNot.....You agree that with his extended prices he offers better WIN value and sometimes with his PLACE terms , even at 1/12th [ see tuesdays Racing Post article ], he offers BETTER returns just on the PLACE part, yet you say its all about "perception" of the Racegoers.
I don't understand that.....so to "protect" racegoers ...you want them to have a WORSE deal....how does that work?

SELHURST,ARE U HAVIN A LAUGH.WELL ADGE LETS HOPE THE RACING POST MOVE ON TO BIGGER AND MORE IMPORTANT THINGS LIKE WHY U CANT GET A BET ON ANYMORE,OR WHY AN ONCOURSE BOOKMAKER BETTING OUT OF PICK NUMBER 80 AT ROYAL ASCOT NEXT YEAR WILL HAVE TO PAY THE SAME TO STAND AS PICK NUMBER ONE.AS U SAY I HOPE ITS BALANCED,I WONDER IF THEY WILL INCLUDE THE OTHER FRONT LINE BOOKMAKERS(IN TOP TEN PITCHES)THAT BET TO A SIXTH ON A REGULAR BASIS AND DONT JUST SINGLE OUT JOCKY.....

what is it they say?"any publicity is good publicity".adge and wasnot see a lot more of him than me but for once i tend to agree with the truth that he doesn't really affect other bookmaker's business as he is pretty smalltime really but must say it's a load of bollox him hiding behind the bigger price on outsiders as the majority of money he takes on the place will still be on the more popular horses that most books will be offering more favourable terms at the same prices plus there will be books going win only offering bigger than him on the rags.
if you want to see books really taking advantage and making it hard to work next to,try working near a well known northern layer topping the whole ring going 1/6 in the 16 runner + handicaps.

if you believe that he offered better PLACE prices at 1/12th the odds each way or at 1/8th in other races than those who bet 1/5th odds each way there is really no hope for you

you have to start somewhere but i'm in full agreement with you regarding any 1/6th odds merchants when the win percentage is above 100%. those that do so on first four races in particular.
did you buy the royal ascot silver pick 80 ?..someone has got a real bargain.

Ribero's point about others taking advantage is spot on. First race at Newcastle on Plate day, a prominent Rails layer was 1/6 123, despite it being 11/4 the field in a 9 runner race.

Simply no need to do this but on a day where many punters are there for the day out, he couldn't resist the opportunity to take advantage

As I stand next to Mr Wilson at a couple of tracks, I can tell you that he has rows every meeting with disgruntled customers who feel that they have been conned.  How is this good for customer retention and the image of the ring?  The racecourses are struggling to get punters through the gate (not concert goers) and it can only do the racecourses harm by their customers feeling poorly treated by the on-course bookmakers - and yes, we will all get tarred with the same brush.

Wassy, I admire you for trying to think Long-Term Customer Retention e.t.c, too many not interested in the slightest and trying to extract as much as they can in the shortest time period possible, in whatever way they can  not interested in the Long-Term at all,

WasNot and Factmachine....

I was working off the Racing Post article.

A maiden stakes at Salisbury where I suspect bookmakers were no better than 1/5 th odds a place and he was 1/12 th the odds

At 50/1 "conventional" bookmakers were offering 10/1 a place, whilst he was offering 1/12th of 125/1 = 10.5/1

At 66/1 they offered 13/1..... he offered 1/12th of 250/1 = 21/1

At 100/1 they offered 20/1 ... he offered 1/12th of 250/1 = 21/1

all rounded up or down

This assumes all conventional bookmakers offered 1/5 th a place in a maiden stakes.[ some may have been worse ]

Its not perception that the public requires..its maths lessons.

No wonder the real punters don't go to the tracks any more, I only bet Saturdays and at big mid week meetings. Bet off course using oddschecker to get the best price, some times best odds guaranteed and at least if I am betting E/W I will get full standard  place terms. COME RACING. NO THANK'S.

selhurst, if you compare one man's odds against the SP you are not comparing like with like.  The SP is a rounded down average of the prices in a small sample of bookmakers in the very best positions.  If you were to compare Wilson's prices to the best odds available at 1/5th odds it would be more meaningful.  Also, comparisons on all the horses, especially the ones the public is likely to want to bet (ie not 250/1 chances) would reveal a very different result and he knows it, which is why he only quoted the rags.
