Statement from the BHA Board Meeting

The Board of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) today met with representatives of the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) and listened to their proposals for adjustments to the new Rules and guidelines on the use of the whip in horseracing.

The Authority’s Review of the use of the whip in horseracing was undertaken over ten months by an expert working group involving widespread consultation and evidence gathering from stakeholders across the sport and more widely including animal welfare organisations and the general public.

The Board has today reiterated its endorsement of the principles behind the review. The new Rules, adopted by the Authority, received widespread support from across the industry.

Any change to regulations must be carefully considered and subject to due process. This means that appropriate evidence needs to be reviewed and there will need to be engagement with other relevant parties. The Board has directed the Review Group to undertake this process and report back by no later than the end of the week.

Until any changes are made, the current rules will continue to apply.

The Board would like to thank the PJA for taking the time to attend this meeting and for their constructive engagement and commitment to work for the best outcome for British Racing. The Board and Review group will continue to liaise with the PJA in the coming days.

Notes to Editors:

Because of the regulatory nature of this issue and the need to ensure due process is fairly conducted the Board will make no further comment on this process until the Review Group has reported back.

The initial Review document - Responsible Regulation: a Review of the use of the whip in Horseracing - can be found at this link: http://www.britishhorseracing.com/whip-review/

Members of the BHA Board are:

•Paul Roy (Chairman)
•Justin Wadham
•John Bridgeman
•Morag Gray
•Ben Gunn
•Nicholas Jones
•Bill Farnsworth
•Mark Johnston

as expected, no change, spineless b*****ds.

The very minimum should have been immediate reversion to the previous rules pending this new review.

Did anyone expect these people to admit they made a mistake?

Who the hell is this board and what authority do they have - I've only heard of 2 of them and we know what their positions are.

the irony is, they are showing caution in trying to identify the issues and to ensure that any changes implemented will work through consultation with all stakeholders

that just begs the question .... why didn't they do that the first time before they made racing a joke?

Why did it take so long, to tell us that it's going to take a further week ??

'The Authority’s Review of the use of the whip in horseracing was undertaken over ten months by an expert working group involving widespread consultation and evidence gathering from stakeholders across the sport and more widely including animal welfare organisations and the general public'.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Getting their excuses in early ...

"widespread consultation." - Nobody or Group within Racing individually named.

BUT - "animal welfare organisations and the general public." -
get a specific namecheck.

Easy to see where their misguided PRIORITIES lie.

That statement is yet another example of the utter contempt the BHA have for the customer.  The 'public' were involved in the consultation process, my god they make my blood boil with their utter bull5h1t!

Totally predictable - the BHA are clearly not fit for purpose - more idiotic procrastination from small-minded men who can't admit they've made a mistake . British horse racing has no chance of dealing with the real issues with fools like this mob in charge

The research was done by a consultant. Dont consultants usually operate in an environment whereby the outcome is already known before they start???

Have any racing 'celebs' twitted yet. If so, what are they saying Confused

Perhaps it would be for the best if they just did away with the whip. I'm sure it won't affect betting turnover...

As a shareholder in a horse, would love these buffoons to come on a stable visit when they bring a 2yo out of the stables and say "There you are pal,get on that without a whip", dont they realise they are dealing with a highly syrung animal thats likely to do anything, sometimes they are so wound up you cant even go near them to give em a pat
