Why are they even giving assurances to these bodies in the first place?

Look at it in black and white terms; the problem is the Grand National. So be it...discontinue the Grand National.

But to go and tinker with mainstream racing and fundamentally change the way horses are ridden all in the interests of "leadership" in the animal welfare sphere...and when all is said and done, to be advocating a different approach to riding compared to Ireland, France, Canada, USA, Argentina, Spain then the BHA are seriously out of touch with commercial realities.

Between the BHA and the bookmakers acting the fools on the Levy, it is the beginning of the end for Racing in the UK.

The animal rights people are the only ones who are getting what they want.

carnage at cheltenham festival

jockeys punching horses
jockeys wacking horses at the start

are you getting the drift, are you keeping  up ,not mine but the publics perception and worrys about racing ,and you are screaming and shouting wether it should be 5,6 or 7 cracks

900 breaches from how many 100,000 rides? And how many are for excesive. Less than third. The rest are hitting in the wrong place and not allowing time to respond. Nothing like a bit of mis-information.

The UK will never be the first to ban the whip. Another major country will have to be first. And ffs they cant even make a decision about the current debacle.

nobody gave a feck about them cos in general no one was watching, 2 horses lie prone in the nations favourite (says a lot about us and our "love" for the animals imo) and theres an outrage, yet they blame the whip, not the size of the fences, the extreme distance or the 40 or so runners, ffs it the race that is cruel and unnecessary not the whip, people have been using whips since the first horse was tamed

lets face it the USA has to ban it and that looks a very dim and distant prospect.....

egner  if your opinion to the old whip rules are based on
animal aids vegetarian animal are people too   sandal wearing must get out in the real worlds views      you really should stop betting and watching horse racing .

i wouldnt mind a bit if a world wide ban came in but for us to do it in isolation would be calamitous to our game in the UK

Animal Aid are a propaganda group who quite clearly would love to see horse racing banned. They are NOT elected by anybody. They are a lobby group of cranks.

snoghtedog......

do you really think it is such a strange and outragous position to take to say in the year 2011 that it would be better all round if horseracing did without whips..!!!!

racing would still take place....a level playing field.....still competitve, perhaps more so...
By:

neither are the BHA elected salmon.......or the jockeys....or the owners.......

since when should the democracy or structure of an organistaion take precence over animal welfare...???

You don`t get it do you renge ? They want anything that IN THEIR OPINION exploits animals banned. The whip is a 1st step to getting rid of racing.

simple answer
yes ..  as for competitive have you watch racing in the last
week.

First Time Poster, it's easy to list a catalogue of unfortunate incidents but to get things in perspective how about doing a list of other sports eh?

For example

Racing driver killed
Footballers stretchered off field
Rugby Player breaks neck
Footballers fighting
Ninetyfive football fans die
Corruption in cricket
Ice Dance competitor has leg broken by fellow competitor
and on, and on and.....
By:

...i disagree salmon.........hundreds of thousands...millions..just in this country let alone the world like horseracing....

...on what possible reasonable basis could it ever be banned......the horses are not whipped and aside from the odd breakdown or accidents or fall over fences ( which could happen just as easily if they are in their paddocks) the welfare would be a non issue....
By:

we are talking about animal rights activists
some of there ilk in the past have dug up dead bodies
and set parts to the dead peoples relatives .
if they had there way animals would get the vote
.   that might not be a bad idea thinking of it

Because these people think that using animals for commercial purposes is exploiting them.
By:

When: 17 Oct 11 21:06
lucky......you miss the point totally......

your examples all involve humans....who have the intelligence and rationale to decide for themselves the extent to which they expose themselves to risk........

horses have no such choice....they are reliant for thier welfare upon the humans to which their welfare is entrusted.

renge, genuine question, given your concerns with racing why are you betting on it?
By:

egner, if I was a horse and you gave me the choice of a couple of cracks of the whip once a month in return for food, stabling, a clean bed, full veterinary care, daily grooming, nice breaks in a grassy field, a retirement at stud or the alternative being that I wasn't conceived in the first place because there was no need for a racehorse, then I know what I'd choose.
By:

we are also talking about people who fully believe animals
are more important than people.

LL - but given a choice of no cracks of the whip and all those nice things, or a couple of cracks of the whip and all those nice things which would you choose then?
By:
LuckyLucan
When: 17 Oct 11 21:13
egner, by the same token you are imposing your human views on what is best for a horse. Have you considered that they might be more than happy with their lives and if they could talk would probably tell you to "....off and mind your own business".

plus if the horses that are monkeys (saying it kindly )
keep on running as poor as some have done in the last
week there days are numbered and without the whip
wrong or right they will.
maybe you will be happy to care for them and prevent
there next career as a tin of dog food

....i have to admit....this subject has made me feel a little uncomfortable...

perhaps ...no i have....pushed the moral implications of whipping horse/fallers,etc to the back of my mind.....

i rarely watch a race as i am mostly a trader/maths guy and dont actively play in running, the screen is simply numbers going back and forth to me......

but of course behind the numbers are living creatures...both human and equine.....

it has..i admit...made me quite uncomfortable.

Surely the owners of these horses that are not very good will ensure that they have a long, happy and safe retirement. I mean we're constantly told about how much these 'racing' folk love their horses.....

pedrobob, it's all just part of our imagination. In reality, we are all just searching for a grassy field under a blue and sunny sky.

One day, we will all realise that in comparison with race horses we suffer far more in our quest for the truth and justice.

i don't agree with abuse of animals either renge, my issue isn't the rules so much as the people trying to manage the sport (badly)

if in this day and age they believe the right thing to do is change laws then ok i can accept that, but i'd expect that whatever they introduce is thought through, tested, sensible and workable

i don't believe these changes are any of those things, i'd hope that with the right process they will resolve the issue, but for me it shows how poor our governing body are
By:

This whole sorry episode highlights how shambolic and divided British 'racing' is; none of the prime movers and shakers - BHA, jockeys and trainers - emerge with any credit whatsoever.
By:

When: 17 Oct 11 21:35
i agree elise....i guess counting hits from the furlong pole...in the heat of battle is unworkable....

..but the the old rules were being flouted and in some cases simply ignored.......and the shambolic BHA didnt seem interested in enforcing them robustly anyway for whatever reason........

not sure what the answer is but am pretty sure they will not revert to the old rules unless the peanalties for breaking them are increased to draconian levels.

...on what possible reasonable basis could it ever be banned......

Because they believe horse racing itself is inherently wrong - read their mission statement ffs

They won't stop until they get what they want. I fully support looking after the welfare of horses, and other animals, but if you keep giving into these people, there'll be no sport left.

This could have been dealt with by now, even I am willing the BHA to say 6 hits and no more and you get 5 day ban no matter what race. Someone has to move on this debate. What you do is tell Animal Aid to f.. off. Why dont the whole lot trainers, owners, jockeys strike bring racing to a holt for an indefinite period, form a new board and deal with the racecourses themselves. Why are rich and powerful owners allowing this to be run by goons.
