Sure we will be back to smoking in cinemas and in hair dressers.

It's a filthy habit and banning it was the best thing to happen to pubs. Get outside.

As this thread proves, smokers are an increasingly ostracized and disliked minority.

I wonder how many ex smokers have hijacked this thread, they're even worse than the normal anti smoking drama queens.

Lets have a petition to ban smoking in PUB DOORWAYS

I agree. and as far as smoking ban goes, i gave up a 40 a day habit when they announced the smoking ban. best thing they ever did. they should go as far as the states and canada and ban it from all public places.

I'm a lifelong smoker(addict)and anything that helps stop smoking has got to be to everyones benefit.Legal or not, it's still an addictive drug that hopefully will eventually lose it's attraction.

I cant believe how many absolute idiots there are on this forum.

I am an ex pub landlord and i watched how the trade has been murdered by the authorities, the smoking ban was the final nail in the coffin.

Landlords/ Landladies should have been given the choice to be either smoking or non smoking, customers dont have to go into the smoking pubs.

I remember when DRINKING pubs were busy, atmospheric and a focal part of local communities.

Pubs now are full of the boring middle classes who never use to go out and have one lime and soda and a burger in a ciabatta.

Destroying peoples businesses and taking away our power to make our own choices is/was a joke.

I still go to the pub every day and always will, but am a dieing breed, i dread to think of what public houses will be in years to come.

Sad times IMO.

Quite right Humanjinx. All those non-smokers who were going to flock back to the pubs when the vile smoking habit was banned seem to have forgotten when it was.
As I said earlier I am an ex-smoker so it no longer affects me one way or the other but I hate those who have given up who become all self-righteous about it. It`s like old men preaching celibacy to all after their own debauched youth.

Well put SS,the antis who got their way destroyed many hundreds of businesses.Hypocritical toerags who think destroying livers is ok and fail to mention THAT cost to the NHS.

Btw Drinkers and smokers contribute much more in taxes than the tee total, non smoking brigade.Much more than the cost to the NHS.

I have another opinion as to why pubs are not so busy.
The price of booze in supermarkets.
I can remember when beer spirits in off licences was not that much cheaper than in the pub. therefore you may as well go to the pub than stay at home. but now the dif is so dramatic that people wont pay 350/4notes for a beer when they can buy the same for 50p in the supermarket.
Gov should raise the duty on beer in supermakets/offlicences in line with pubs. they would soon be busier and the smoking ban would be forgotten.

That was more or less true about beer, but not spirits or wine, until about 1980 robinlace but not really after that. I daresay it is a factor as is the depression but older people left pubs in droves after July 2007.

...and a petition to ban PUBS also....

....anywhere that encourages utter bores to congregate and mill around talking sh*t for hours on end should be banned.

LaughLaughLaughLaugh[;)]

....i might also add that most pubs are so dour and depressing...and filled with parochial, petty and provincial and people slurring their narrow views....

that one should never step foot in a pub without being p*ssed to start with ......

..and even then...NEVER enter unless their is a thick haze of ciggy smoke to mask your entrance and exit.....and of course so you dont have to see "regulars"....who mostly look like Adams Family tribute acts.

i find that the non-smokers who goes to the pubs now are very boring people. Its just not the custom of the smokers the pubs have lost but also their non-smoking friends who used to go there with them who liked a few pints and not like the ones that go there just for one glass at around 10pm which lasts them til closing time.

You go out to interact and meet people Robin(life does not start and end on here) i agree about non smoking pubs as well, surely in a true market place that would stand up, unless its not really about that and its really about people wanting to force their opinions on others.

Drink can be a harmful thing to bystanders, ive never heard of a person going on a rampage after 20 Bensons[)

No one forces me to go into a pub or eaterie where there are numerous brats running round out of control either, i just take my custom elsewhere

I know in Ireland the divorce rate went up after the smoking ban was introduced. Apparently it was down to smokers going outside and meeting other smokers who were much more interesting than their boring non-smoking partners who had stayed inside.

Not sure about the exact wording in the UK re-the ban. Here some bars have exploited the wording of the legislation by putting up signs banning children and pregnant women.

...you mean his daily ritual as below rsc.......

..as we speak Charnier/Cash Machine is playing out his nightly ritual....

...wearing pink satin dressing gown with pink fur piping and matching slippers...

...cigarette holder with a Gitane slowly burning in one hand...

....and in the other a Martini or Appletini....

and sashaying around his damp one bed flat to this....

....well..my initially thought is that it would empty the last few reamining regulars from the pubs.....

then again...depending on the type of pub ...it may actually increase attendance!!!!

TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson has launched an e-petition calling on the Government to review the smoking ban.

Worrall Thompson runs the Greyhound pub at Rotherfield Peppard near Henley-on-Thames and is a patron of smokers' group Forest, which is supporting the e-petition.

The text of the petition is: "We petition the Government to review the impact of the smoking ban on pubs and clubs and consider an amendment that would give licensees the option of separate well-ventilated smoking rooms."

"Since the introduction of the smoking ban there has been a dramatic increase in pub closures. The ban has damaged local communities with thousands of people deciding to stay at home instead of going out."

Commenting on the move, Worrall Thompson said: "Let's be fair. Tobacco is a legal product. In Britain 10 million adult smokers contribute £10 billion a year in tobacco taxation alone. It's only right that they should be accommodated in some public places.

"If the government doesn't want adults to smoke at home in front of the children or litter the streets, they should be allowed to smoke in some licensed premises."

Simon Clark, director of Forest and the Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign, said: "Give landlords and customers a choice. We want the smoking ban amended so licensees can choose to provide a separate, well-ventilated smoking room for adults who wish to smoke.

"Let common sense prevail. A modest change in the law is all we ask

They will come after the drinkers nextLaugh just think in a few years time the alcohol limit will be zero, you will be tested at work and probably given a booze credit limit of three pints per week.

Added to the fact that Horse racing will be outlawed in 20 years time and you'll all be bored shitlessLaugh, you'll live longer and it will damn well feel like itSilly

if an owner of a pub wants his pub to be a smoking pub he should be allowed too. He should have a choice like everyone else. If a non-smoker decides he dont want to go there because of the smoking he dont have to thats his choice.(but at least the non-smoker has a choice)which a smoker dont have in this country.  The uk are the only EU mugs to enforce this EU legislation.
