as long as there is an amendment that those who develop lung cancer pay for their treatment directly .....in order that the NHS resources can be directed to those who do not willingly and knowingly damage their health (and others).

The feckers who supported the ban in the first place are the ones that never enter pubs.

The ban has killed thousands of pubs and communities and destroyed thousands of jobs.

I suppose in the current climate we can afford this.

More goes in from cigarette duty than it cost the NHS to treat smoking related illness. Far more. Whether it "costs" the overall economy is another matter, but the NHS argument is wrong.

Smokers die younger on average aswell, "saving" the NHS in future years from treating other non-smoking related illness that would have occured had the smoker not killed themselves.

I am not a smoker myself but the last time I looked it up it was legal to smoke in this country so why do we treat smokers like lepers ?????????????

They pay enough in duty to be treated like kings.

correct mr g. i feel sorry for the old folk that have smoked all their lives only to be told now that they have to smoke out in the rain and cold
By:

Why? They have been killing others for years.

I was a heavy ( ish ) smoker for 40 years but haven`t had a cig for about 50 weeks so would just about call myself an ex-smoker. However I will certainly sign the petition. This stuff about smokers costing the NHS is nonsense. As somebody has said elsewhere everybody dies of something and not many suddenly without warning. So non-smokers cost the NHS as well. And as for the pension situation. If it wasn`t for smokers dying 10 years earlier or whatever on average, pensions really would become non-viable.

The government should be giving out free electronic cigarettes instead of other useless nicotine replacement therapies. The reason they don't is they want to pay lip service to smoking cessation but don't really want them to give up as they'll lose the smoking taxes they pay and they'll live longer (= extra pension costs).

What gives a smoker the right to force others to share in his foul habit?. Have you ever noticed how they hold the burning end of the cigarette away from their faces? Even they can't stand breathing in the un-filtered smoke. Why should I have to put up with it? Oh,and please don't come up with the smokers' standard reply: 'No one forces you to go to the pub'. Have you any idea of the effects of breathing in cigarette smoke? I know a top vascular surgeon who has horror stories to tell regarding patients losing a limb to vascular problems caused by smoking, being told if they don't stop, they could well lose the other foot, and a couple of years having the other amputated, having not quit. If you want to do that,or any of the many other things smoking does to every bodily system, that's your business, but don't subject others to your habit whether they like it or not. Also why should people who work in pubs have to breath it in? After all, they work there 40-50 hours a week. Would you have them quit their jobs so that you can indulge your lung-tarring
habit?

I think we can all agree that smokers do not deserve our support or respect in any shape or form.
By:

When: 11 Oct 11 19:56
Well you could obviously have smoking and non-smoking pubs. Should the workers breathing in secondary smoke apply to your butlers and maids as well if you happen to smoke ?

if you read the petition its for a smoking room in the pub/club. so you non smokers wont be affected by the smoke so you can wear the same clothes out again all week[;)]
