sparrow,
I think you are right about it being S Nesbitt not S Norton for Ubedizzy. My mistake. Onlooker It was Brian Taylor on Jellaby but I remember Peter O'Sullevan saying "Ernie" Taylor had been unshipped. Was that a nickname for him? |
|
By:
Just googled 'Brian Ernie Taylor jockey' and found the Jellaby race on youtube!
It's the last clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWkL2gcXNuY It would have definitely been a 1.01 on here and I can see why I was so sick about it at the time! |

Someone mentioned Approval earlier, I didn't even realise it was trained by H Cecil! I seem to remember it getting beat on the line by a fast finishing Great Heron. No idea if I'm right or not, can anyone confirm? Something tells me it was (what was) the Observer Gold Cup (now Racing Post Trophy) but if someone tells me different...
Raffingora and My Swanee, I remember those and also Mummy's Pet - trouble is I'm just recalling names and can't remember who trained them, what distances they ran over etc. Le Garcon D'or was an old trouper as well. Them were t'days... |

Was an old fav. |

armpits - Approval won that race (Duncan Keith rode), so you must be thinking of another. I don't remember ever seeing him race, just the card in the paper, and I think he began his career 21.
Mummys Pet was trained by John Sutcliffe, I think. I saw him come up against Cawstons Pride as a 2yo in the Cornwallis. She ran away from him in the final furlong. He became champion sprinter at 3, I think. Raffingora and My Swanee both made their name with Bill Marshall. I think Raffingora had been with Doug Smith before that (when less successful). L Garcon D'Or - Jack Ormston - speedway rider, like Ron Mason (Petite Path, Track Spare, etc) |

Raffingora and My Swanee trained by Bill Marshall at Littleton near Winchester Hants, ridden usually by one L Piggott!

armpits - Great Heron was 2nd to Approval. Must have not finished quite fast enough! He was by Sea-Bird. (trained in Ireland?)
|

"Sir Humphrey de Trafford's two-year-old colt Approval, trained by Henry Cecil and ridden by Duncan Keith comes from last to first to beat hot favourite Great Heron, trained by Vincent O'Brien for John Galbreath and the mount of Lester Piggott, in the Observer Gold Cup (now the Racing Post Trophy) at Doncaster.
This run put Approval into second behind Nijinsky in the Free Handicap, just 2lb adrift. But while Nijinsky's second season was one of glittering success, Approval did not scale such heights, despite winning the Dante. He was a well-beaten seventh to Nijinsky in the Derby and was eventually sold to stand at stud in Australia." |

By:
ok thanks lads, the old memory ain't what it used to be! Right, so if Great Heron was 2nd am I right in thinking he was hot favourite for the race and Approval was something of a long shot? I know this is asking a lot, we're talking about a race from 40 odd years ago. Another favourite of mine from a few years later (maybe late 70s) was Greenland Park. A sprinter, I think, who raced against (and usually lost to) Devon Ditty. Or have I got this wrong as well?

sorry ged, obviously i posted the above just after you...
|
|
By:
armpits - you've got that right with those 2yo fillies. They butted heads in most of the top 2yo fillies races. Devon Ditty had the best of it.

Devon Ditty - Greville Starkey
Greenland Park - Harry White |

I loved Devon Ditty, ged
trained by Harry Thomson Jones. |

cheers again Ged! Ok another one; a sprint handicapper called Shuffling who, apparently, saved his best form for the autumn. Apparently, cos when I backed the thing every Sept/Oct etc, it did nowt. I think it was still running as an eight/nine year old. Does this ring any bells with anyone?
|
|
By:
yep armpits. usually won in Sep/Oct, 6/7f, soft ground. Geoff Huffer? Brian Lunness?
Then went to Willie Hastings Bass, and won first time out at 20/1 over 5f on firm in July. Different training habits! (Timeform boasted about the 20/1 winner for years!) |
|
By:
...they had it top-rated, though the 'discerning punter' wouldn't have touched it with a bargepole (unless you put your faith in WH-B, as he was a bit of a first-time out merchant)

I loved Shuffling, too.

Bill Marshall trained Raffingora and My Swanee at Ogbourne Maisey (Benita Stables) He was there in 1966, and still in 1970 - By 1973 he had moved to Majors Farm, Whitsbury, Fordingbridge. You appear to have got mixed up with LES HALL - at Littleton, Winchester. Now there's a name to conjour with. ![]() |

By:
Did he (LH) train Littleton Lad then? I remember him running in low-grade sprint handicaps in the south against the likes of Ron and Tzigeuna.

Littleton Lad, Littleton Lass.
He got 'Warned Off' for the Lad. |

"Bill Marshall trained Raffingora and My Swanee at Ogbourne Maisey (Benita Stables)"
Years after that, remember when Bill Marshall trained at Lester Piggott's yard in Newmarket - a horse got loose in the yard one day and bolted........and ended up in Lester's swimming pool ! |

Anyone remember a horse called Buzzards Bay being tailed off in a handicap and then suddenly springing to life and nearly winning the race, I think the actual winner was Lafontaine. I was amazed and declared that horse will win a group race one day and it duly obliged at 50-1, I think it was bit later than the 70's but not sure.
|
|
By:
I still remember my first ever winner when I was a nipper, Ulster Prince. I think DD's sire Song was a pretty good sprinter and sire in his day.
|
|
By:
Buzzards Bay won the Hunt Cup, Magnet Cup (his last run in a hcap - he set a weight-carrying record), and QE2 in 1982. Lafontaine won the Cumberland Lodge at the same Ascot meeting as that QE2, so you may be getting a little mixed on that bit
|
|
By:
Song won the Kings Stand in 1969 - trained by Henry Candy's father.
|

I don't think I am getting mixed up, if I am not mistaken BB won a string of races as 3YO and then started to play up. The race I am thinking of was before he won all those big races as a 4yo I think. I will never forget it, BB must have been 50 lengths off the lead and well tailed off (although rose tinted memory may have exagerated a bit), then suddenly he appeared from nowhere and nearly caught the leader (I am sure it was Lafontaine), a sign of things to come. I found a little article on SL, although it doesn't mention that race. BTW I did back it at 50-1. Anyone remeber that race?

you'll need onlooker for that one probably. He's got the old form books.

Any chance Onlooker?

From memory Buzzards Bay was trained by H Collingridge (but my memory's failing)

H.Collingridge was the trainer of Buzzards Bay, Lee

Anyone remember North Stoke , probably trained by John Dunlop as it's a place in Arundel as far as I can remember , it ran up a sequence as a 3yo but wasn't entered or supplemented for the Epsom Derby against general opinion , wondered how high his rating reached and whether there's any evidence he may have given the Epsom winner any sort of race.

Some great names and memories here, from the era in which I was starting to get an interest in the sport.
Well done all. |
|
By:
Hayden - I think North Stoke won at Haydock when I was there. Short price (11/8?) in a valuable 3yo hcap. I think Jimmy Bleasdale might have ridden it. It was Dunlop trained, looked as if he might be going along similar lines to Moon Madness, though I guess he didn't in the end.
|
|
By:
Can anyone remember who trained Dred Scot? I think Kipper Lynch rode it several times - the horse won its fair share too!
What about sprinters ( I think) called Cry No More and Come Play With Me? All these from mid/late 70's. |
|

Some great fillies in those days like, Park Top and across the channel, Dahlia, Alez France,

By:
alfie t allez france much better than dahlia in france .dahlia first king geo win was the best 3yo filly run iv ever seen .piggot never moves to beat top horses .i think the faster pace the better for her. in the u s a she would have been a superstar

North Stoke won the Bass club H'cap at Haydock in the then powerful Nelson Bunker Hunt colours. Was there that day too. Went upwards through the ranks until being beaten in the Champion Stakes.
