fairtrader, in a 10 year cycle tracks even out, good years bad years.
if you are going to buy back row numbers, dont lay front row bookies. if you fall a price, dont try to bet out of it laying the rest, stand your ground and pray. GOOD LUCK |

Thanks Gents, you've been a great help. I think ill have to start back row at a few courses for now while building up. How many days would you all suggest are needed to make it pay full time, at the moment I work for a firm every other week and the pay isn't bad. My original thoughts were to keep my job for now and build up.

My thoughts exactly barry.
Ribero1, certainly not too proud. I have around £15k, but this would need to include everything including start up costs, float, any hedging accounts, fees and cost of picthes. What can I expect for this? This is my long term plan and I know it will be hard but surely worth it. Cheers |

There is an old saying that you can get out of on course bookmaking with a million providing you start with 2 millions.This has never been truer than today.

fairtrader,you need to start very slowly then,if you buy a secon hand board it will leave with about 10k,you will need half of that for a float so i would buy one pitch which has plenty of summer saturdays,york would be ideal but its the other end of the country but it would still be my choice,thats your only option,see how it goes and be patient,if you make any money the first year then you can buy a second pitch and so on.

All the places I bet at in the south are hopeless btw fairtrader. North much better. Been to Towcester today. Used to be one of my best places, hopeless now. Similarly the Rowley Mile, used to be very profitable. Most days laughable now, only 2000 guineas day even workable.

Level of business awful today. Couple of bad EW races where I bet to the proper terms and got hammered. Figures bad as always. Still got nicely in front after 4, gave most of it back on last 3. Seems to happen a lot at Towcester.

I have no flag (yet) but dont believe in 1/6th as it antaganises the public and is very bad PR. One bookie I could see was betting 1/6th odds but his only sign was a tiny strip of paper at the bottom of his board which you couldnt read unless you were a foot away. I find this unacceptable but the Gambling Commission werent interested in my idea of a minimum size of signage. He was taking 2 bets to every one I took. Very frustrating.
I was a bit unlucky with favs being run out of the places in the last 200 yards etc. |

Sounds like sensible advice nineiron - though I would not know ! As for earlier comment I suspect one or two Royal Ascots might be up for sale - be interesting to see when the 'window' opens.

Warwick tatts? F'in ell. I no longer bet in tatts for the flat but still have a pitch in that region for the NH and it is truely awful.
Also, it is part of the Jockey Club racecourses group so they will want something stupid in fees from 2012. Get yourself to York, Chester and Haydock. |

Be careful re: Chester/York very often fixtures clash. I'm sure that wouldn't worry the 'pitch renters' but as someone new to the game something you need to be aware of otherwise if you play with a straight bat you'll need a rep. and two sets of kit.

2 final tips from me. Do NOT buy any all weather. Do NOT buy any cheap looking pitch with the name CHEPSTOW at the beginning of it. May as well burn your money.

Where ever you buy. Do not trade every day you are entitled to. Ask around, being selective with save you plenty.
e.g.Aintree. Just because you have a number does not mean you trade every day. You would just stand on Fri and Sat of National meeting. Not suggesting you buy Aintree as too expensive for your budget and its location but the principle applies to most places. |

Demo. I do not have the wealth of experience of many and trading is very difficult. However, there are tracks in the South where money can be made. Sandown, Fakenham, July, Nottingham, Yarmouth. On certain days even off bad numbers.
I am not suggesting fortunes but a reasonable profit can be lifted. Yesteryear i remember bookies had margins on their side, the current ones standing should remember that. There is no point moaning about no margins and always losing. Remember you do not have to bet to a very low margin and if the bookies realised it they are only shooting themselves in the foot by trying to compete continually with the Exchanges. Be patient and you do not have to take ever bet. |
