ALL THE BEST EVERYONELove

REVE DE NUIT  9/2  Southwell  2-30   4pts

Hasn't ran the best part of a year but has won this corresponding event for the last two years in succession. 4 lb higher now and decent draw, sure to be primed for the hat-trick bid..

Jockey thought he had it, turning around looking for dangers when going well. William Haigh who is also suited to further got a second wind and spoiled the party..

1 William Haigh 5/2F
2 Reve De Nuit 7/2
3 Call To Reason 14/1

Billy, I haven't been on this forum for a year or two and this thread is definitely one of the more interesting contributions. However I fail to see the logic here in these rigid rules,

Handicaps  Must be at least 4/1
Non H/cps  Must be between 6/4- 11/4

Surely the price acceptable about any prospective bet is related to how many of the oppostion if running to their best are capable of beating the selection. In a 20 runner handicap, this could run into double figures and 4-1 would not be value. In a small field handicap where there are only say one two deemed capable of beating the selection then 7-2 could be value. Also I can't get my head around the unwillingness  a bet in a non handicap because a horse is a bigger price than 11-4 (I think that is what you are saying). Don't get me wrong, this is not a criticism because you appear to have done far better over the past year than 99% of other punters, I am simply interested to know the logic behind these two stipulations.

Thanks paul for your interest, you are right in what you are saying but... A few weeks ago I sat down and looked at all my results and in STAGE ONE my best results came when the prices were between 4/1 and 10/1, if you knocked off all those selections under and over I would of made even more. I had to draw the line somewhere and I set a rule that is working for me since I started it.
In STAGE TWO I started to back more non handicaps and again those selections above 11/4 always seem to find one too good.
This is just something that seems to work for me, there are many different methods and again thanks for the input.

I studied this race to death and couldn't see another winner, but with my new rule I wouldn't back it at 3/1. You are spot on with what you say Paul, I got away with it this time and won even more but on reflection I will be using 3/1 as my starting point on my venture of looking for winners..

Southwell 12.15  Full Result

1st  7 Argentine (IRE)  5-1
2nd  6 Fear Nothing  11-4 F
3rd  8 Gorgeous Goblin (IRE)  5-1

Billy, going back many years, a friend of mine who only ever bet in all aged handicaps (with some success)had a rule whereby he used to divide the number of runners by 3 and if his prospective bet(s) in any race were this price or above then he was on. So in the case of Argentine above, 12/3, he would have wanted 4-1 or more. It was a lazy man's way I suppose and is not for me but it saved him a lot of time preparing a 'tissue' for each race.

FLUCTUATION is still a maiden after 13 attempts but if he is ever going to lose his maiden it will surely be here at Southwell.
Drawn high again today just like four days ago when just pipped into 2nd when worse off at the weights with most of his rivals in a 6f classified event.
The return to 7f could do the trick and give him more time to stick his handsome bay head in front on the stands rail make it fourteen times lucky..

Not many winners in this field and my fancy FIERY OSCAR only betters most of them by one with a win over this distance at clonmel in 2009 in a handicap hurdle off 84, now down to a winable mark of 87 and has been quietly fancied of late.
Decent jockey on today and good run could be on the cards after finding 2m6f too far last time..
