the sp reporters are bookmakers pals - take victors man he was at windsor today - now correct me if im wrong wasnt he an Sp reporter prior to Victor taking him on to walk about lashing out ** to tv interviewers,
The whole Sp returns require a shake up - if betfair sps were used alongside chosen course layers that would be fair. I go to Kempton a fair bit as its near my home - some evenings there are 5 bookmakers there Hills Ladbrokes and Co plus John White x 2 as he has 2 joints there. And if it rains there are no punters - how the hell can they return SPs fairly? |

since the very second the horse passed the post there has been over 20+ threads id say about this topic will well over probably 250+ disagreeing with the situation..Do u really think the BHA give a hoot about these threads..yer only way..and i mean this in no disrespect to ne1 who started any thread about this topic is to combine together and at least write umpteen letters.the 5 mins it takes ppl to read as far as the 4th page and comment cud have been spend writting a letter..i know a letter is unlikely to stir any reaction but if ye write a large amount of letters...have proof on the letters and get a journalist regardless of how small to show that these letters have been wrote without any reaction by the bha...
p.s this post probably makes no sense |

The bigger the overround, the bigger the levy.
We should all be happy that there is more money going into racing. |
By:
that is very nearly the nail on the head steak
By:
i do like the "chaos in ring" angle - suggesting the Aintree bookies are useless idiots and winding them up - GW will be looking forward to next years GN.
By:
Not read the whole thread and don't know a lot about this but:
Why can't GC/BHA/Trading Standards set as maximum overround per race? - does n't have to be the same, could vary by type of race/no. of runners etc. Why can't overround % be displayed on bookies boards on course, in shops, on websites? (think it is in some of these cases). Why can't technology be set up so that if bookies try and lengthen prices over and above overround limit, they're unable to do so without shortening other runner(s) and staying within overround limit - technology could display options for price changes to stay within limit. There could be a tolerance of 2-3% to work within Sure I'm open to accusations of naivity but surely these issues would n't arise if regulated properly. In this day and age, 'not having time' to lengthen horses is a lamentably poor excuse. |
By:
good idea. and for that matter let's cap BP and Harrods and mercedes benz huh?
By:
you think they're not regulated? Not too long ago BA were heavily fined for price fixing.
By:
Every other business is prosecuted for price fixing or manipulating the market at the expense of the public.Bookmakers who are licenced, have been getting away with it for years.Any other busnesses are wary of doing this because a vigilant press usually finds them out.Looking after the racing media has turned out to be a worthwhile investment for them.
By:
press one thing, EU competition law another - wonder if activities of bookmaking industry have ever been brought to the attention of Brussels?
By:
Two observations:
Bookmakers can price-up whatever prices they like - it's called a free market. Punters have a choice as to whether they take the price and strike a bet - or not. Whatever I think of free market philosophy, they are the facts of life. One question: How many punters will have been put-off racing by the National over-round ? |
By:
That' true FT.. but the issue here is NOT the prices put on the board. It's the SP return. The SP return is manipulated purely for the benefit of the Big off course firms who will have saved hundreds of thousands by returning totally unrepresentative prices to the poor old once a year punter in tne shops.
It's not right and in my opinion is bordering on the criminal. And I'm a bookmaker!i |
By:
I'll answer my own question: nil to zero.

Still not relevant..

It's not right and in my opinion is bordering on the criminal. Agreed, surely at very least warrants an investigation on the basis of potential price fixing. |

That is an on-going problem Paddy, ever since Lonny Donoghue delivered the cream to his paymasters, and was eventually persuaded to fall onto his silver spoon.
We see it every day, I just wonder why all the surprise over the GN returns. |
By:
Freemarkets are controlled by legal legislation and you are not allowed to collude with your competitors to the disadvantage of customers. All other bunnesses receive massive fines for doing this.
By:
Can anyone tell me the last time the on-course market wasn't controlled by the off-course corporations ?
This is just a more modern, refined version, whereby we on-course reps. aren't needed anymore. Purely maximum profits with minimum costs, whilst in reality punters and the public are, and have been for over thirty years, screewed over. |
By:
Thats right Freeta bookmakers have for years acted together to effectively manipulate the oncourse market to the disadvantage of the public. They have always got away with it but maybe on Saturday they got too greedy and one of the trained monkeys of the racing media will be brave enough to rattle the bars of his cage and say something.
As i said before most oncourse bookmakers are honest and just trying to make a living in a difficult market.Cant blame them for taking offcourse money to shorten SPs. |
