Have the bookies just pulled off the most brazen scalping of punters we've ever seen with their returned SPs.

With margins around the 130% mark fifteen or 20 minutes before the off time, prices were consistently clipped with an eventual over round of 155% being returned. This is the worst return for National punters I have seen.

Here are the stats for this decade:
2000 - 138%
2001 - 142%
2002 - 143%
2003 - 143%
2004 - 133%
2005 - 139%
2006 - 147%
2007 - 152%
2008 - 146%
2009 - 146%
2010 - 155%

And the reps have the audacity to claim what a desperate race it was for their firms.

Dreadful the way that a number of horses really shortened up before the off and nothing pushed out, Dream Alliance and Hello Bud halved in price.

Very predictably, all the big prices collapsed in the final 15 minutes - but, of course, without the front ones being lengthened.

At least Monkerhostin wasn't running for them this year. ;)

and too add, what do you intend on doing because of this appaling return (btw I agree this is poor but i doubt it reflected the majority of boards as everyone chases the machine price regardless).

Its laughable the way ppl write this stuff on here with absolutely no intention of doin anythin about it.

Some things will never change though and it takes a lot to convert someone , certainly something a bit more subtle and easy to understand than this ....

SEPTEMBER 2001

Joe Punter: Twenty tenners please.

Betfair Bob: You would be better off putting that on Betfair rather than this betting shop, It could be as much as 40 on there, less 5% comm, gives you over 37/1.

Joe Punter: Really? I will have a look at that.

SEPTEMBER 2008

Joe Punter: Twenty tenners please.

Betfair Bob: You would be better off putting that on Betfair, it could be as much as 40 on there, less your commission, which is your net winnings multiplied by the Market Base Rate, after your Discount Rate is converted from your Betfair Points Total, and applied to the Market Base Rate, unless of course, you have taken a Betfair Holiday, when your Betfair Points will not be credited, so your Discount Rate will remain the same, but you won't be subject to a 15% decay in your Points Total at the end of the week.

However, if you win you may qualify for the Premium Charge of up to 22.5% which is dependant on your forthcoming weekly profit in relation to the commission payable for that week or on a rolling 60 week average, which is when your commission and implied commission is calculated and divided by two, which is ok because it can be offset against the 1000 Premium Charge allowance, and at the end of the week you find out what price you got.

Joe Punter: Twenty tenners please.

Corbiewood,** me off if it makes you feel better but I am doing something about it.

I will be liaisng with colleagues to ensure we point out to anyone who wants to listen that punters are being offered poor value prices by High Street bookmakers compared to the 104.8% SP over round on Betfair.

We've already highlighted this on Facebook and Twitter and elswhere online and will do what we can to make sure as many people as possible get to hear about this National Disgrace.

bookmakers are not efficient at pushing out the prices of long-shots, particularly in big fields, this is why tote (and exchanges)consistently pay higher odds for long-shot winners.

large over-round at the off-time is not unusual for grand national.

Pythia. You're not comparing like with like. Most of the bookies are offering quarter odds for FIVE places AND best odds Guaranteed.

Betfair has a win market and a place market. In the latter the value on here is POOR compared to the high street bookies.

The 2 things that really annoy me are:

The BBC don't have a vested interest or cabal with the bookies so why don't THEY highlight it, instead of having clowns telling us that everything is being backed!!! What next, 1000% overrounds?

The bare-faced cheek of the books to come out and say they have lost - this simply cannot be the truth.

Corbiewood is irritating in that he trots out the same tripe every time but does make the very fair point - what is being done about it?
By:

corbiewood.
The point is not the prices that were available 30 mins before the off, which probably were reasonable. It is the obvious manipulation of the SP which is clearly designed to rip-off the once a year punter who doesn`t realise you can take a price that is a disgrace.

The Grimster

Bookies don't apply a 'premium' charge to Grand National winners either! Get your own house in order before you atart on about so called 'rip-offs' :)

Grimster, Corbie has a point though?

Seriously what punter would have had their GN bet on bf, unless they were betting win only + were getting well over the odds?

5 places, enhanced prices, money back fallers etc etc - betfair cant compete here + they know it.

ps I agree that the final SP show was horrid, but seriously anyone who will know the difference will have taken a price....and as for posting it on facebook and twitter pffffttt

Anyone referring to the bookie place terms should compare the SP place returns to the Betfair SP place returns:

Don't Push It - 3.5 Bookie SP vs 5.13 BSP
Big Fella Thanks - 4.5 Bookie SP vs 4.48 BSP
State Of Play - 5.0 Bookie SP vs 6.17 BSP
Big Fella Thanks - 3.5 Bookie SP vs 3.97 BSP
Hello Bud - 6.0 Bookie SP vs 8.95 BSP

Hmmm....
By:
corbiewood
When: 10 Apr 10 18:23
salmon,

I totally agree with that - the sp system is not representative of what prices are actually being displayed.

the 150% was a shafting, a compleet shafting - however ppl with such entrenched views (myself inc) only see the bad and ignore the good and vice versa.

This forum isnt exactly the place for reasoned debate - esp when you ve got nutters like that info character that would in all likelyhood attempt a stabbing of me if he saw me, all because he cant arb in serious volume.
