Smooth performance from the widest of draws. Soumy tucked her in and brought her over to the rails running in 4th and then challenged 400m out and went away from them without being asked too much of a question.

Just watched the replay. The winner won comfortably and may well be able to confirm placings with Zellie if they meet again, but it was a slowly run race (about three seconds slower than the Prix Djebel, after they crawled early on) and Zellie seemed to hit a flat spot when Peslier first went after her and she finished her race off strongly, suggesting that a step back up to a mile in a more truly run contest will suit her very well. I definitely wouldn't rule out Zellie after that performance. Malavath showed last year that she has loads of speed - she won the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte over 6f in the autumn - and may have been better suited by today's crawl and sprint finish than the runner-up.
|
By:
Fair comments regards pace of race. Zellie looks like a dot of a thing and prefer the winner to confirm placings at HQ's if they re-oppose especially with better ground sure to suit.

Graffard: "Rien n'est encore acté concernant la suite de son programme mais nous pourrions aller "challenger" les Britanniques, à Newmarket, même si j'ai une réserve quant à sa capacité à tenir les 1.600 mètres." In other words, 'nothing's set in stone regards her programme, but we could challenge the 'Brits' at Newmarket, even though I have concerns about her getting the mile'.
|
By:
Her Breeders Cup run over the mile seemed to be within her scope and she was staying on stoutly at Del Mar so I would not be concerned about the trip for her and the better ground will also assist her imo. I think she has a great ew chance but fear Inspiral may be too good on the day.I hope both french fillies come over.
|
By:
Yes, her Breeders Cup run suggests the mile should be within scope: even though Del Mar is a tight turning track, she was badly drawn on the outside, started slowly and had to come from some way off the pace. The uncertainty about the trip is partly due to her being by the sprinter Mehmas, who has had quite a few speedy types in his relatively brief stallion career to date.

Cachet was a comfortable winner of the Nell Gwyn this afternoon, but there were no Group 1 class fillies in opposition and she didn't need to improve on her juvenile form to win as she did. If the fourth Perfect News (OR 100) ran more or less to her official mark, then Cachet (OR 109) was entitled to beat her by 4.5 lengths, and she'll need to improve by at least another few pounds to have a winning chance in the Guineas. Not without a chance, but others make more appeal at this stage. She's 20/1 for the Guineas after that Nell Gwyn success.
|
By:
Cachet may be an improver but would be a surprise winner for me in 1000GNS. Would be brilliant for her to make first four. Aidan's 100 rated Prettiest out early in Gowran. Be heading to the shredder if anything but a good winner today. Big drop down from Group 1 Moyglare.
|
By:
Prettiest once again disappointed at Gowran today. Despite her breeding and a very promising start to her career in the first half of last season, she simply hasn't progressed unfortunately.

Andre Fabre is reportedly still targeting the 1000 Guineas with Zellie. He was pleased with the filly's reappearance run in the Prix Imprudence (over 7f on holding ground) and is keen to step her back up to a mile: "I was quite pleased; she was quite winterish, but she has done well since then and an extra furlong will be quite good for her. So far, we think we’ll go to Newmarket, we’re just waiting to see what happens in the trials this week. I hope she will enjoy it, Newmarket is the best course in the world, it suits every horse."
Stablemate Raclette is reportedly still winterish and her participation in the Prix de la Grotte on Sunday (prep race for the French Guineas) will depend on how she works this week. Fabre also mentioned that Agave (winner of the Gr.3 Prix Penelope on her seasonal debut) is a possible for the Oaks. |
By:
'jamesp', Thank-you for keeping us informed on possible participants. Much appreciated by all.

The 1000G shaping up to be a really good classic with the French looking like they are going to send Zellie and Malavath. At least we now look likely to get a run for our money.
|
By:
This horse may be by Oasis Dream but stays the Mile.
Beaten every thing put in front of him so far, including the unbeaten Point Lonsdale 3 1/2L. Coroebus to me is the only danger.A very good animal, himself. |

sorry
wrong thread. |
By:
fabre's Raclette finished down the field today at Longchamp
|
By:
Yes Raclette, reportedly one of the best fillies Fabre has ever trained, was ridden confidently, held up at the rear, but never got into contention. A very puzzling and disappointing performance.
|
By:
Apparently still had winter coat and obviously still a bit behind schedule. I wouldn't write her off just yet.
|
By:
She's by Frankel out of Gr.1 10f winner Emollient (which makes her a full sister to Ger Lyons' 10f performer Licence), so chances are she will need further than a mile. Prix de Diane could be a more suitable classic target than the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.
|
By:
Juddmonte racing manager Barry Mahon said: "It was her first run and while of course we’re disappointed getting beat, it’s the start of a long season and we’ve a long way to go. I'm sure she’ll get ten furlongs but it was mainly about blowing away the cobwebs today. She hasn’t fully come in her coat and I’d say she’ll improve for today."

Malavath coming for our Guineas. Superb and the 1000G shaping up to be a better race than the 2000G

not a very encouraging update on Inspiral today
https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/qipco-1000-guineas-inspiral-on-target/200202 |
By:
Yes, it sounds like it's not been an ideal preparation. When a filly is going straight to the Guineas without a prep race or racecourse gallop, you need to be confident that she's 100% fit and ready on the big day. I'd be a little bit worried that the Gosdens will have left a little to work on, i.e. the Guineas will bring her on, it's the start of a long season etc. She only has 2-4 pounds in hand of some of her rivals on official ratings based on last season's form, and some of those (e.g. Zellie) have had a prep run. My other slight concern about Inspiral is that quick ground would make it much more of a speed test and will suit specialist milers with a preference for fast ground (such as Discoveries) rather than fillies like Inspiral that might appreciate 10f later on. But I might have underestimated the filly - she showed good tactical speed in the Fillies' Mile at the end of last season and has probably progressed physically.
|
By:
Inspiral is not exactly exuding confidence for potential backers. I think she may not be fav come next week or on day of the race; drifted out to 11/4, and weak.
|
By:
Tenebrism already favourite with some firms.
|
By:
Yes. Will she make the race? She's virtually friendless since the beginning of this week; 7/2 from 9/4.
|
By:
I don't see tenebrism getting the trip
|
By:
A_T, why not?
|
By:
I share some of those doubts about Tenebrism getting the trip, largely due to Aidan's comments after the Cheveley Park Stakes last autumn: "I'd say there's a lot [more to come]. She was barely ready but there is only one Cheveley Park and she has such blistering speed it would be unfair to not let her take her chance. I'd imagine she'd get seven furlongs but speed is her thing. If she was to go again she could go to America for the Breeders' Cup but we'll see what the lads want to do. You'd never be surprised [on going to the Guineas] when they have that much class. That helps them get a mile but she wouldn't get much further than that. She can be ridden so patiently and has such a turn of toe that anything is possible." On the other hand, her recent work after racing at the Curragh will have encouraged hopes that she will get the mile: "She went very well. They went a strong seven and she came home very well under Ryan. She quickened past them on the outside and she'll go straight to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas." Her dam was a dual Gr.1 winning miler, so there's plenty of encouragement on that side of the pedigree. If she's straight enough for her seasonal reappearance and gets the mile, she'll probably win the Guineas.
|
By:
Jamesp, stamina wise he also sounded hopeful, at least, as early as her debut win.

By:
Caravaggio is a sire they want to do well - so as with all Aidan's comments needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. By a sprinter out of a miler - I don't see this filly being a miler.
|
By:
I don't know if she'll stay. When a 2yo isn't asked to go beyond sprint trips then, more often than not, it's likely they're not going to get a mile. With Tenebrism it's less clear as she had an interrupted campaign. If she'd had more racing we don't know if O'Brien would've stepped her up at some stage, he did enter her over 7f. I know it's been said her stride pattern isn't in keeping with a usual miler.
For me, she's easily the best filly in the field. On ability she'd comfortably win an average Guineas, in my view, whereas Inspiral would only be good enough to place. So my thinking may be clouded by wanting the better filly to stay. However, what gives me hope is the way she won the Cheveley Park. Not necessarily the way she finished the race strongly, as I'm well aware that's no guarantee of staying further. It was more about the way she travelled for much of the race. I know she's very fast because of the winning figure I have for her. Normally when one is that fast and running over its optimum trip then it travels comfortably early on against lesser opposition. That wasn't what I saw with Tenebrism. |
By:
inspiral nonner ,gosden not happy with her!
|
By:
Not the least surprise. The vibe has been not encouraging. Oh well, another winter fav bites the dust just a week before the gig.
Let's hope we do not get a field less than 7 runners. |
By:
A clear run for Tenebrism if she stays the distance; Ten Sovereigns did not when fav, stable other runner Magna Grecia won that day, and easily.
I think one of those that ran behind Inspiral could nick this, if Tenebrism does not stay. Is Hello You an intended runner? She beat Cachet and Jumbly fairly easily in one of runs last season; got stuffed 1st run this season. |
By:
I go for Zellie and Mise en Scene. I've heard good reports about this one just lately..
|
By:
I think Malawath has a decent chance if Soumillon is onbaord. She definitely stays.
|
By:
Dermot Weld now saying Homeless Songs now only 50/50 to take her place - doesn't say there's a problem with the filly. Altogether not terribly helpful.
|
By:
Weld: "Homeless Songs will be left in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, but the French Guineas is under strong consideration and I would like to make punters aware of that. I would say it is 50-50 where she will go. She's in very good form and has come out of her Leopardstown race very well. I'll make a final decision on Wednesday, or Thursday at the latest."
If she's in very good form and has come out of her trial very well, why wouldn't Weld run her at Newmarket in the race he is so keen to win? I guess he thinks that the extra two weeks will help his filly, but I feel sorry for punters who assumed that she would run at Newmarket. |
By:
I think with the French big guns coming over the French version would be easier to win. But, no consolation for punters backing her here.
