Early EW double, Sungrazer and Persian Knight. Thinking the value is now but probably wrong!
By:
Haha... Sungrazer 5/2 fav now for the Cup!

Pakistan Star is 14-1 in the Uk, at his best he’d win the Vase (or go very close) and Buick is a plus for me, I don’t think he’ll be 14-1 on the day in HK so that could be some value.

Mr D - next week Wetherby or Doncaster
By:
Either of those tracks should be spot on for him HK... hopefully a change of luck away from Aintree!
Pakistan Star does offer some value but that last run was very off putting. Buick might be the jock to switch him back on... he's done it before on the enigmatic rogue. The Vase looks a pretty good race now, I'm leaning towards Latrobe and Lys Gracieux at the moment. |

Mr D - it’s looking like we’ve got Brian back on too

That's great news HK.

Magic Man booked for the ride on Lys Gracieux, won previous G1 on her at Kyoto over 11f. Extra furlong in the HK Vase is my only concern with her. She has put in some quick final 3f times this year.
Capri is a no go for HK Vase and will not be rocking up. Tokyo's granite firm surface not to his liking. Latrobe has arrived in HK and looks in good shape... interesting back over 12f. Sungrazer's Tenno Sho (Autumn) form franked in the Japan Cup, Kiseki ran a mega race from the front and only got mowed down in last 2000 meters by a superstar filly. Suave Richard third also ran in the Tenno Sho (Autumn). Happy with the odds I got on him now for the HK Cup... Deidre the danger IMO. Is Riko going to run at Doncaster Friday HK? |
By:
Oops, extra 0 on 200... that would be a marathon distance!

By:
I managed to get some 33s on Latrobe just after his run in Australia - such an open race though
Taking the fav out the mile - anything else take your eye , Dinos? playing for places really. |
By:
I'm taking on Beauty Gen, I think he over did it in his last race. I might be completely wrong but that wasn't an ideal prep for a bigger race IMO. Hung badly left and closer to the stands side rail at the finish. He's a tough nut though!
I've backed Persian Knight in the mile Roz, he's more at home on a right handed track and Sha Tin looks spot on for him. Mozu Ascot sweated up badly before the Mile Championship at Kyoto and didn't look good. He's better than where he finished that day and he's got a good turn of foot. Vivlos is too big a price at 20-1 as well, 9f is her perfect trip but dropping back to 8f should be fine. She is a tempting EW bet alongside Persian Knight... a strong pace would suit both. With the international raiders it's best to wait and see how they have travelled to HK before getting heavily involved betting wise. |

I see that Andrew Balding has flown Beat The Bank over which was part of the late owners plans- it would be great for the late owners family if they were to pull it off . Bit below this class though i suspect and would have to step up massively to win this as he looks a bit too slow.
By:
He’s running tomorrow at Donny, if he jumps as he normally does then I’d expect him to go very close.
By:
I forgot to add - think this is a more suitable distance for him too.
By:
Riko on the drift HK... I'm going to bide my time and see if I can get a double figure EW price. I just hope one of them doesn't get withdrawn... only 8 bloody runners.
By:
Think he’ll be around 10 or 12’s I’m just hoping he jumps better this time. He schooled well after his bad landing last run so hopefully he’ll run much better. Could back him in running and wait to see how he jumps the first fence

Only 7 runners Mr D
By:
10-1 at the moment HK!
After reading Ryan Moore is booked to ride and watching the barrier trial this morning I've backed Beat The Clock for the HK Sprint... took the 10/1 EW. Pace meltdown would help and he's consistent. Pakistan Star looked better in the same barrier trial as well! ![]() |
By:
FFS... missed your post!
By:
Taken him out because of the ground
By:
It will be a two runner race before you know it!
![]() Next time HK! ![]() |
By:
Better to have a next time than to have him run on unsuitable ground.
By:
I’m interested in DB Pin Mr D but I’m waiting until the draw. He’ll be suited by a fast pace too.
By:
I like DB Pin as well HK and he ran nice barrier trial. The 14-1 with SPBet is a tempting EW bet... DB Pin should come on for his first run back which looked to be nothing more than cruise around Sha Tin. The booking of Ryan Moore on BTC made my mind but still not sure whether that was the right move!
Buick booked for the rides on Vivlos (Mile) and Staphanos (Cup). |

Just a note, the long range forecast for next Sunday is rain and cold. You can keep an eye on it via the hko
https://www.hko.gov.hk/m/home.htm |
By:
Werther would be a massive player in the Cup if there is a lot of rain around. This could screw things up for me but the track does drain very well.

Winners Way at 25/33’s wouldn’t be the worst you could back ew in the sprint if it got a bit soft. He’s only 2l behind the main players as it is anyway and he’s had some form on softer going.

Just watched Sungrazer work on the track, Dinos - looked really impressive under some fast work- was the most impressive in all the track work imo.
Is it free to go and watch the races over there Accie ? and if not how much do they charge to get into the track. |
By:
Yep, he looks in cracking form Roz, I just hope they go a good pace in the Cup.
Vivlos was an eye catcher as well, she put in some slick work... I think she is one of those horses that really likes getting on a plane. Took the 20-1 EW as back up in the Mile. |
By:
The majority of weather forecasts reckon no rain for the weekend now... just overcast!?
By:
Werther out of HK Cup... shame!
By:
It’s HK$ 10 for general entry to both racecourses (about £1 on current exchange rates).
The weather forecast is improving, it will be quite cold (15 degrees) but with a few rain patches so I expect the going to be no worse than good; as you mentioned before the tracks drain well and it’s only if there’s continual rain will it affect the going. |

What is the consensus on Waldgeist? He’s the best horse on ratings by a fair amount but Arc horses don’t (haven’t) followed up well in the Vase and he’s had a long season, is this race an afterthought? I am very interested in Mirage Dancer, he looked in good form on the trackwork this morning.

The Vase is looking more difficult every time i look at it - I've decided not to add to my antepost bet on Latbrobe, and tbh im not really that confident on Latrobe either, i definitely wouldn't back him at 10/1.
Maybe the market will begin to open up in the next few days. I've been umming and ahing about the two horses coming from the Arc , Waldgeist & Salouen. Salouen trainer Kirk is saying today that ground is too firm to train on and Waldgeist is far too short at 4/1 imo. This Salouen only just got pegged by a head by Cracksman on one of the worlds toughest 1m4f trips on reported soft ground , Cracksman rated 130 that day and is currently the worlds joint highest rated racehorse - So i'd be kicking myself If he were to win on Sunday. If i was confident that he didn't need soft ground then id definitely be betting him with the good draw he got today - he has had a decent break but i dont get any vibes from the trainer's interview today so it knocks any optimism i had. |
By:
For me the Vase is the hardest race HK, question marks about all of them... a real head scratcher. Mirage Dancer looks well and I like his pedigree but is he good enough for a G1 race?
I backed Waldgeist in the Arc antepost and was a bit disappointed with his run, jock didn't make it easy for him though. If he hadn't of gone to the Breeders Cup he would interest me more but a no bet for me. Persian Knight got a stinker of a draw (14) in the Mile but he's a hold up horse so might not be that bad. Beauty Gen (12) didn't fair that well either. DB Pin got a nice slot in 2... happy enough with BTC in 8. Hot King Prawn in 11 not ideal but will go forward no matter what draw. |
By:
I agree Roz, Salouen is an interesting one in the Vase... one thing I've noticed over the years, soft ground horses seem to go pretty well on the Sha Tin turf. Especially if it's rated Good.
By:
Yes Dinos, I have noticed that there is a trend for soft ground horses ...or horses that stay further than 1m4f doing well in the Vase. That run at Epsom is a tough trip so maybe the vase was always going to be the race for Salouen when it comes to a G1 as it tends to be run at a fast pace.
But, i just cant bet him , there is always excuses being made for the horse. Also, I dont mean any disrespect to Kirk but he's not known for conditioning horses to win international races or Group 1 winners , never mind International Group 1 races . I would love it for him to get a G1 winner and it wouldn't surprise me if Oisin Murphy manages to get him up , but he wont be carrying any of my cash. |
