That's been my mistake. Backing a horse last year hoping to lay off and here we are 3 weeks away and no real idea of a market. I cannot remember it being this bad.
By:
If I'd already backed Cracksman I'd be letting my bet ride, but if I was intending to lay off I'd do it just before the Dante, while people are still hoping to see an impressive trial winner and shortening the price of the ones with potential.

whats your view on the dante figgis? looks a very competitive race. seems like a bit of a headscratcher to me, not only have you got to work out if cracksman will confirm form with Permian, there's also the stoute angle with crystal ocean, plus some godolphin horses in there as well
what did you think of cracksmans closing sectionals at Epsom? did they mark him out as being top class? |
By:
I've absolutely no idea LR
, it's a race I'll just watch. Cracksman is a horse with obvious potential but at this stage I wouldn't be interested in backing him even for the Dante as his price is still about potential rather than substance. Same goes for Crystal Ocean but he's got even more to prove. I suspect the money for that one is just because of the trainer and the fact that people want to see an impressive trial winner and he's one of the few still to run that hasn't had chance to blot his copybook yet. I doubt he's been showing anything seriously impressive at home. My guess is the race will be won unimpressively by one of the more exposed runners. |

Interesting type just gone in for Johnny G at windsor there,Crowned Eagle, very well bred.Presumably not as good as Cracksman???

Needs about 30lb more improvement but still a nice horse.

Cracksman
If I had a good position on Cracksman right now after reading this I would green-out ASAP. "The opposition in the Dante looks as though it's going to be very strong with a bigger field than you might normally expect," said Oppenheimer. "Godolphin are planning to send a big team to the race and I believe Sir Evelyn de Rothschild's horse has a very good chance. "I wouldn't be surprised if we don't win at York but instead finish in the first three and then decide not to run in the Derby." "Cracksman isn't like Golden Horn at all, in that he's been very laid-back, although he's now much better. I walked away from the Epsom trial only hoping he might be able to come back for the Derby. "I don't feel at this stage the same as I felt about Golden Horn. Going into the Dante I didn't think Golden Horn would stay a mile and a half in the Derby. "This year my worry is whether we're good enough to be running in the Derby. I'd like to see him win the Dante before I start thinking seriously about Epsom." Gosden said: "The Dante is closer to the Derby than usual, owing to a late Easter. "We’ve lost a week, which isn't helpful. On the other hand Cracksman needs the experience to race if we're even to consider Epsom. He's had only two runs in his life. "It’s the smartest trial, but I still see it as a trial. He came out of his last race well and he learned a lot." |

The owner of Cracksman is playing down his prospect of winning the Dante and running in the Derby. Oppenheimer: "I wouldn't be surprised if we don't win at York but instead finish in the 1st 3 and then decide not to run in the Derby."

I used to be a parrot but I'm alright now. I used to be a parrot buy I'm alright now. |

whenever they play something down that comes out of that stable I think "watch out"
didn't Gosden say he was just looking for some black type with Daban before the nell gwyn? Putting the public away while they have it off is their usual modus operandi. |

Looking at few weather forecasts there appears to be plenty of rain coming to York before Thursday.

think I might back crystal ocean for the derby due to a theory I have.
that theory is that sea the stars had an edge in the derby due to his tactical speed and has passed that edge to his progeny. He had a very good record with fancied runners at Epsom. Taghrooda won the oaks and Harzand the Derby. If we cast our mind back to STS derby he had more tactical speed than the more stoutly bred O'Brien runners. He was better than them anyway, but that tactical speed helped him to take a prominent position and easily beat the staying on fame or glory. Same with Harzand who held off Us Army Ranger. That tactical speed is ideal at Epsom because that way you stay out of the scrimmaging in behind and perhaps more importantly can get first run in the straight. it's just a theory anyway. |

Brig .. Mr Oppenheimer doesn't fill you with confidence in the RP does he. Looks like bollies off and one for next years Triumph.

By:
Loto I have never really been confident of anything as far as Cracksman is concerned. I think he is just being pragmatic. He wants him to win but wouldn't be surprised if he was beaten. He says he isn't as confident as he was about Golden Horn and if you look at Golden Horn's Dante where the main danger was his stable companion that is blindingly obvious. On the other hand he wasn't confident enough to supplement GH at the same stage as he supplemented Cracksman so what does that tell you?
I think he has every reason to be worried because the Dante looks a stronger race this year and when you have a laid back horse who doesn't show what he can do at home you are more in the dark. Personally, just like his owner, I wouldn't be surprised if he was beaten but finished close up. I hope whatever happens they run him in the Derby because there is only one Derby and he has paid the supplementary fee. That doesn't mean he cannot win today and win easily because there is no form to say otherwise. In fact some of the form points to a win. |
By:
It's not the same for me because I have only backed him but I feel the same. I bet he gets beaten and doesn't even run in the Derby. As a punter have you ever felt like that?
The facts are that the Stoute horse could be anything or nothing. It's not like he has been lined up for this for weeks. I guess this movement is based more upon lack of opposition than it is on known ability. I know Workforce won the Derby after being beaten in the Dante but his racing profile was miles different. He won his maiden by 6 lengths beaten a 90+ rated horse. In the Dante he was really short behind a Godolphin horse who had been narrowly beaten in a Gr1, had been 2000 Guineas favourite on the day and had just won a Gr3. The winner of the Dante was unbeaten and had won a Gr2 and a Gr3. I suggest this Dante is a lot different and so is the Stoute horse. Of course so is the opposition. Godolphin are running four because they don't know the pecking order, JOB is running one who his stable has never fancied in a race and AOB may be having a last dart at something. I hope Frankie remembers Epsom, gets him prominent or leading and makes all. They keep saying the horse is laid back so won't over do himself in front. What I don't want is to look back and say 'why did he do that ffs?'. |

*I meant, win the Dante, not win toady.

The only positive of Cracksman over Golden Horn is his ability to stay the Derby distance better, but he is no Golden Horn in terms of ability and form achieved up to the present moment.
The form of Crystal Ocean is no better than Mirage Dancer so why the price discrepancy; the support for him is solely on the reputation of his trainer, and the lack of any outstanding horse so far. These two horses have achieved far less than Midterm. Rekindling was a former inmate of Wachman who'd retired. Rekindling, to me, ran probably the best trial both here and Ireland eg beating Yucatan/Capri - horses with good Group form - given the performances and domination of the other AOB's inmates at Chester; he certainly deserves to be running in the Dante. I think the Dante could be his trip as he did not pull away from Yucatan despite having 1st run over the latter. Of Godolphin, apart from Best Solution, only Benbatl is unexposed and would have the credential to progress further on his form behind Eminent - the rest could be discounted, in my opinion. Cracksman needs to win, and win well otherwise his position at the head of the market will be no longer, and possibly scratched from this race, I fear, given the proximity of the Dante and Derby this year. |
By:
Just saw the decs for the Dante: Swiss Storm is running; he was a promising juvenile out of Frankel. I hope runs very well for David Elsworth (a forgotten trainer) who was famous for Desert Orchid and In the groove, and makes the Derby.

"Of Godolphin, apart from Best Solution, only Benbatl is unexposed and would have the credential to progress further on his form behind Eminent - the rest could be discounted, in my opinion"
I'm not sure that's right, Imp. Not sure that's right at all, old boy. |
By:
I'm not sure Cracksman needs to either win or win well to win the Derby. This looks like the best trial apart from the Guineas and apparently Cracksman is improving so although I agree he has to go close I'm not convinced he has to win. I was hoping he would be a 6/4 shot but that is not going to be the case and the comments coming out of connections is not helping with his Derby price.
There is a lot of rain around so being out of a Pivotal mare who won on heavy ground the going shouldn't be a disadvantage. |
By:
Looks like there will be very heavy rain on Wednesday so whatever happens the Dante form may becoming a bit misleadiing unless it's also soft on Derby Day. There may also of course be a flurry of non-runners.
Given all that I've backed Wolf Country @ 14/1 who should lap it up. ![]() |
By:
The front two in the Dante market are there purely because of what they might do rather than what they have done. Nevertheless Rekindling still looks too short to me as personally I think the Ballysax was crap. For me, the horse with form in the book clearly ahead of these is Benbatl and if he comes out of the Craven okay and gets the trip he's going to go very close.
By:
As for whether Cracksman needs to win or not it all depends on the pace of the race. If they go slow and he finishes strongly then allowances can be made, but if it's a well run race there should be no excuse really.
By:
^ That is true but we don't know how or if he is improving. I know there isn't a long time before the Derby but 10.5f on very soft ground is not 12f of good ground. I think he would prefer soft ground but that is only based upon his knee action I don't know for sure.
I agree Benbatl will be hard to beat. I see him as a stronger opponent than Stoute's horse. Sin Bin has spoken highly of him in his stable tour and he has Best Solution in the yard. I think Eminent will beat him if they meet again so I have backed him to win the Derby a few days ago. |

wasatch range - win handicap 19th may go on to derby - similar to jack hobbs 2 years ago

I can see why Eminent would appeal, his Craven win would give him a good chance in the Derby if he can stay that far. My doubt with him is to my eyes he looked to have a hard race in the Craven even though he won convincingly in the end, as I said before the Guineas, and his Guineas run was below his Craven win in my view. I know excuses were made and it's true that he'd be better off a faster pace than he got there but he still ran a bit flat to me. He may just have needed a bit more time than he got between the Craven and Guineas so he could be back on song next time. At the back of my mind though I just wonder if the hard Craven win in a good time might've set such an inexperienced horse back for a while.
By:
I have no problem with Eminent in this regard. He has only run 3 times, twice this year so not over raced. He was running right away from Benbatl in the Craven, who had already run, and the Guineas wasn't run to suit him.
I mentioned Benbatl being highly rated by Sin Bin but I am sure Cracksman would have held the same position with Gosden had he done a stable tour. Will thy all run if the ground is very soft? I have to say I was worried that a fast York would not have suited Cracksman so I have no complaints in that regard. I just wish, like everyone else, the connections had kept their collective mouths shut. They may be right but by pushing out the price for both races makes my life difficult for no reason. |
By:
By stating 'like everyone else' I mean the other runners connections. They seem to be talking up their horses while Cracksman's seem to be talking him down.
By:
Surely you want connections to say what they think truthfully, if AO doesn't believe that Cracksman is as good as Golden horn then that's something I am interested in as a punter as he is much better placed to know having been privy to information that I am not. It would be terrible if trainers / owners always referred to their stock as the 2nd coming regardless of whether they thought that or not.
By:
Who was the last person who openly talked down their horse's chances? I don't need AO to tell me Golden Horn looks better than Cracksman and in fact he probably hasn't a clue. Trainers and jockeys often don't know one horse from another. How can he know Golden Horn is better than Cracksman? If he won the Derby then met Jack Hobbs in the Eclipse would that prove anything? The whole race seems to be muddled so why talk down one horse? What can possibly be gained? Other than others not fearing taking him on. Makes no sense to me.
By:
he's been very laid-back, although he's now much better
From Oppenheimer's comments it sounds like Cracksman doesn't really show a lot at home so they probably don't really know what they've got, they're more hoping. |
By:
Various opinions have been aired about horses at the top of the betting market either because of their price contractions on account of their trainers but one that seems to have been overlooked is Eminent. Eminent ran a good race in the 2000 Guineas and is going straight to this race, I believe; he is also most likely to stay too; at 14/1 is a proper betting proposition, surely?
By:
That's absolutely right imo. In his first race Frankie rode something else and last time out JG said he thought he wouldn't win. Well if the race had been properly run and he hadn't met trouble he would, I believe, have won a lot easier than he did. So they have been wrong so far. From a potential laying point of view though the last thing you want is the connections talking him down.
I feel the same about Eminent and took 17s and 18s the other day because I am trying to look at the race without Cracksman. |
By:
I wouldn't believe a word of it Brig - JG knows his horses and he has clearly always had this one pencilled in as his best Derby prospect. Of course he might not be as good as Golden Horn but he almost certainly won't need to be.

By:
Unless Churchill turns up and/or Eminent upholds the Guineas form this year's Derby renewal is very ordinary, and unlikely to trouble the judge against their elders in the Autumn big races eg Eclipse or the Arc.
By:
I honestly don't know how anyone can think that bearing in mind there are so many unexposed horses coming into the race. 5 or 6 of them run tomorrow. 2 or 3 run on Saturday (hopefully). The race isn't resting on Churchill or Eminent's shoulders, Imp. Not yet anyway.
By:
Agreed Headmaster, total garbage. It might not look strong at the moment but we could get a 6 lengths winner, nobody knows how strong the form will be before the race. This obsession with Churchill, as though he's already a superstar, has become very tedious.
By:
Could you plz name the unexposed horses entered for this race that had previous form that could do justice? Apart from Swiss Storm and the two I mentioned earlier those that could run on thursday and this weekend - too close to the Derby to be taken seriously - I'd like to be enlightened.
By:
Can you tell me what Wolf Country, Call To Mind, Forest Ranger and Valcartier will be rated at the end of the season, Imp? Tempted to throw in Contrapposto too, who despite already having 5 runs looks like he's aching for a trip so I would class as unexposed. He reminds me a little of Libertarian.
By:
completely agree with the headmaster. Perhaps Swiss storm and wolf country won't achieve much but you could hardly make sweeping statements about their potential at this stage. Anything is possible for them.
Another sweeping and difficult to understand statement he comes out with is: The form of Crystal Ocean is no better than Mirage Dancer so why the price discrepancy; the support for him is solely on the reputation of his trainer, and the lack of any outstanding horse so far. These two horses have achieved far less than Midterm. His breeding is better than Mirage Dancer. You can't just put the two together; every horse stands in isolation. Plus perhaps you should check Stoute's record In the Dante stakes and his record in the Derby in general before you start writing this horse off before he's even been given a chance. Perhaps it's hard to understand, but the money for him over the last few days for the Dante and Derby is underpinned by more knowledge than some random bloke who makes sweeping statements on an internet forum. ![]() |
