How many points won this competition last time in 2013/14? Is it fair to expect the points required to win to be higher this time bearing in mind you are not limited to 1 star horse? Perhaps 400 plus will be required to win or maybe more. Any thoughts?

So here's what I'm thinking in terms of tactics - all thoughts gratefully received.
2 sets of lists - 1 focused on Dec, 1 overall. Wait until I see confirmed runners for Hennessy & Fighting 5th. Ignore bonus races like Betfair Hurdle,Bet bright Chase, Welsh National - as more than likely the winners of these aren't in the list. Focus Dec lists on runners with confirmed plans for the month, and winners of Hennessy, Xmas Hurdle, King George, and possibly Fighting 5th. Complete with horses with confirmed plans for Dec, and who have decent chance of winning at Cheltenham Focus Overall lists on runners for Xmas Hurdle, KG, and possible Fighting 5th, and then who will have a decent chance at winnin at Cheltenham and winning a couple of times beforehand. On both lists throw in a couple of dark horses who could win at a decent SP. Write off entry fees and hope for the best. |

Couldn't get that enthusiastic over this comp as it's a bit mickey mouse and I had to place my coupons sooner than I would like today (coupons are so 20th century) and I feel cursed already having read the racing headlines.
Anyhow, my good lady has an entry too and the free raceday tickets means we'll make a profit on the venture. If they sort themselves out for online entries into a competition with more depth I would be prepared to splash out on a large perm at £2 a go, but this does feel like money for old rope. Good luck folks... |

Talking to the cashier today apparently a fella put 300 entries in their shop a few days ago. He said there was nothing like this
sort of interest last year, definitely profiting from the demise of the ttf. |

I went into the Hills shop in Rugby this morning to put on my entries. The cashier was putting 400 entries through for somebody. He said he had done 200 for the same guy last night. His assistant then did mine on the other till much to the chagrin of a few customers who wanted to place bets and collect winnings.

started ok with irvine and many clouds, only trouble is irvine was the only one listed in the jumps list running in the fighting fifth.

Wonder how many people played this in the same manner as the TTF.The points scoring makes this comp less of a thinking mans lottery and more a Lateral thinking mans lottery. Under TTF scoring it was possible to turn up at the festival having amassed 50-60 or so points from the horses that win the more valuable races. This comp gives 10 points per race and 25 for a bonus race, that means making bankers of horses that will go off at odds shorter than 3/1 an inpracticle strategy, especially if the horses connections decide after one run to do a Well Chief. To play in this manner you will be looking at 35 points maximum from that particular choice.

Yes, the scoring is problematic. The horses who you can plot their season are likely to go off short prices in big races, but trying to land the big odds at say the festival is a real guessing game. Of course, the more difficult the game is to understand, the less appeal it has to the average betting shop punter. WH are just selling hope.

Willie Mullins always has multiple entries at the early declaration stages of big races, and he wouldnt be the first to use a powerful stable companion to scare off the opposition thus leaving a depleted field there for the taking. Throughout last season and still to this day Willie was slated by punters and pundits alike for not running Annie in the Champion hurdle. The same could be said of Un Du Sceux but there are many targets and many horses and only a fool would put all the eggs in the same basket. If I owned Annie I wouldnt have a problem using Annie's assumed pressence to frighten everything away when my own horse is the highest rated remaining runner. Especially if I have already made my mind up to run her in much the same manner as Quevega but adding the Aintree race to Chelts and Punchestown and with just a little white lie, no bigger than not intending to run her in the first place means I swerve all the flak and questions about intentions and targets, leaving a stress free run to do what I want not what others want...

We ended up doing 2000 entries, compared to 750 last year + 400 in the TTF.
Had to employ a couple of helpers on Friday to get the slips done though, but definitely helped us as we managed to get rid of pretty much all of the Annie Power and got rid of both Simonsig and Sprinter Sacre as well. We ended up leaving Un de Sceaux and Saphir de Rheu in, as I thought they had both jumped pretty well in the main. We had Many Clouds in 20% and Irving in 100% so we have a fair chunk with both in. We ended up doing half a Welsh National line, and filled the rest up with a few Novice Hurdlers. Had Jollyallan in that box, in the thought that he might show up in the BF Hurdle, but only did a 10%. |

Other main tactic was overly representing Irish horses, as we thought they'd be underrepresented in the main, given that it's an English contest.

You must have done more than 10% worth of Allez Colombieres then, considering he was Irish trained and he was favourite for the Supreme, 20%ish ?

Annie Power is being prepared for a Spring offensive; she will avoid the creeping bombardment of questions and summises from the Chapman and Harveys field guns, choosing instead to stay in her bunker (walking exercise daily). Once the noise settles, and the opposition has played its cards, she will appear, going forward to take the Mares race at Cheltenham. Fresh and better for her run she will arrive in Liverpool receiving all the allowances, take on the big boys where for the first time ever in battle you will see her tank. Then off to Punchestown, scare off all opposition and complete the less than trouble Somme offensive.
