Cecil's Hot Snap
taken out of Oaks

BY JAMES BURN 12:05PM 13 MAY 2013

HOT SNAP, as short as 10-1 for the Investec Oaks, will not bid to give trainer Sir Henry Cecil a ninth win in the Epsom Classic after connections took her out of the race.

Owned by Khalid Abdullah, Hot Snap disappointed when 5-2 favourite for the 1,000 Guineas in which she finished ninth of 15.

Her sister, the six-time top-level winner Midday, finished second to Sariska in the 2009 Oaks, but Epsom is off the agenda for her sibling.
Teddy Grimthorpe, Abdullah's racing manager, said on Monday: "Hot Snap's been taken out of the Oaks. We will give her a bit of time and try to get her back to speed. We will get her back working and see how she is before making any plans."

The daughter of Pivotal bolted up on her seasonal reappearance in the Nell Gwyn, but could not build on that in the Guineas with Cecil saying she found the good to firm ground against her.

She is entered in the Ribblesdale and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Hughie Morrison, trainer of Banoffee, has confirmed the plan is to supplement the Cheshire Oaks winner for the Oaks subject to discussion with owners Michael Kerr-Dineen and Lord Hambleden.

The unbeaten Hurricane Run filly is a general 12-1 chance.

I'm very interested to ee Woodland Aria is listed to turn up on Wednesday, considering Gosden's fine recent record too...

Has anyone read any news of plans for Just The Judge. If she is likely to run in the Oaks, she would be my choice.

Just The Judge appears likely to stick at a mile for the foreseeable future following a fantastic run in defeat in Sunday's Qipco 1000 Guineas.

The daughter of Lawman looked likely to give fledgling trainer Charlie Hills his first taste of Classic glory when taking up the running two furlongs from home, but was mowed down late in the day by Sky Lantern.

Hills will wait to see how his stable star recovers, but the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh or the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot appear more likely targets than the Investec Oaks over a mile and a half at Epsom at the end of the month.

The Lambourn handler said: "She's very good this morning. She lost little weight, she ate up and seems well and bright in herself.

"She ran a massive race. She did all the hard work, she was always up there and has just got caught very late.

"The winner has come the other side of her and she didn't have time to respond, but we were delighted with her performance and she showed she is well capable of competing at the highest level.

"It's only the start of the year for her, there are lots of big races to go for and hopefully she'll win at least one, if not more, of them.

"We'll see how she is in the next week or 10 days. If she's absolutely bouncing, bucking and kicking, then we'll consider going to Ireland with her.

"If we feel she wants a bit more time, we can wait for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot."

Asked if that meant the Oaks was ruled out, Hills said: "We're open-minded. We'll see how she is and have a chat with the owners and take it from there.

"She showed a good cruising speed in the Guineas, travelled very strongly and saw out the mile well. All options are open at the moment."

Liber Nauticus looks a big old lump to handle Epsom, could end up a Leger sort if progressing

big or not i thought she did it quite well the oaks can be a rough race and her size might be as much an asset as a hinderence

When: 15 May 13 15:02
One has to allow for the fact that it was a muddling race, but the bare form of Liber Nauticus' win at York today is nowhere good enough to win an Oaks.  The runner-up had won a Musselburgh handicap last time off a mark of just 77 and the third, whilst promising, had only won a lowly Wolverhampton maiden.  A very promising filly, to be sure, but I'm not convinced she has the pace or acceleration to win an Oaks.  Looks more like an Irish Oaks or Yorkshire Oaks type.  I'm confident about Secret Gesture at Epsom, with Moth the obvious danger.

Agree James. I wouldn't be totally surprised if they skipped Epsom tbh because she might prefer and easier track. But regardless of the course, and the fact she is 2/2 and still open to improvement, she just didn't impress me at all. Western Aria looked like a non-staying the way she travelled into the race and found nothing and Gosden is saying they will drop her back in trip. I am not certain of her sire Azamour either. Most of his best horses do well in listed/G2 company and have a better strike rate on Good to Soft than Good to Firm. I think Secret Gesture is very much the one to beat!! still 7/2.

Have to agree LN was a bit disappointing. At first I was inclined to put it down to them going slow early, but the ground was slowing after the first race and on viewing the video again I wouldn't say they were crawling and the pace quickened from some way out. The first 3 finished in the order I had them prior to the race and ran almost to the pound, so I'm not convinced she could be excused because of the early pace. It looks like she's not improved since her debut. Of course she might well come on a few pounds for the run, but I couldn't back her on that hope. I think she may need a bit more time to fulfil her potential. For me, Moth has definitely shown the best form so far, but it looks like being a mediocre Oaks.

You can see her being all at sea at epsom and the ribblesdale could see her running out of track before she fully gets going, the yorkshire oaks looks more like her cup of tea.

Imo she needs time and distance ,Leger could be ideal for her,as for the oaks, think they'll be going too quick for her and it will be over before she gets going.

On the clock, it was a poor performance with no redeeming feature. Other than that she has substance, the jockey was positive, she looked better the further she went. Not an Oaks bet for me, however.

She is going to improve for a trip,I like her attitude, still a baby but she has class.I think she will be ok at Epsom, she travels well and she handled Goodwood.Secret Gesture,Moth apart from that, its not a vintage Oaks field and she is trained by a master who will have her spot on at Epsom.

I would not back anything until I know for sure where Just The Judge runs next. The yard clearly know best whether she will stay but if they have not ruled the Oaks out, she is still the one I would back.

My concern about Moth is what kind of race she has in the Irish 1000. When O'Brien ran Shahtoush there after the Guineas she never ran her race, for one reason or another, so she was still relatively fresh for the Oaks. Imagine only really came to peak form there before winning the Oaks the following weekend. If Moth has a hard race it will be some achievement if she can keep her form for the Oaks after running so well in 3 races in such a short space of time.

Mind playing tricks, just had a check and it was 12 days gap for both Imagine and Shahtoush, would only be 5 days this year. I thought Moth was intended for the Curragh but seems unlikely they'd try to take in both races.
By:
sintonian
When: 19 May 13 13:59
With just 5 days between races i'd be amazed if they ran in both. Is there a chance she may not run at Epsom given the Irish Guineas does not look particularly strong? The Curragh will suit her better than Newmarket!

Magical Dream was taken out of the Oaks at the forfeit stage, sint.  In any case, she was a bit disappointing on that comeback start behind Alive Alive Oh and is not a guaranteed stayer (imo).
Liber Nauticus is very weak on here (just matched at 10, with no money queuing to back her).  Maybe Stoute is thinking of swerving Epsom in favour of a crack at the Ribblesdale and/or Irish Oaks?

The 11/4 about Secret Gesture is drying up, generally now 5/2.  Just matched on here at 3.70.  With slight doubts about the participation of both Moth and Liber Nauticus, there is scope for the price to shorten up further.  6/1 straight after the Lingfield Oaks Trial was a steal! Cool
