Headgear a negative? Traditionally anyway but didn't stop McKelvey going close last term. I'm on BA at a big price anyway. Ground could be too lively though.

The ground is my major concern. He will want soft at least. I too have backed him at fancy odds and will fail to complete my exams the following Monday should he win the race. My sources tell me that Dessie Hughes is bullish about his chances.

Wouldn't worry about the headgear. What percentage of runners wear it each year?

Low enough I'd say.

I'd reckon alot of them were big prices too, horse who had it thrown on out of desperation after a string of poor runs.

Yeah but I'm wondering is it a bit like the "Master Minded can't win the CC because he's a five year old and they never win it" stat.

What percentage of runners try in headgear? What were their S.P.'s? etc.

what form has the horse shown to be fancied for the race off its current mark?

Sorry, can't help you with that George - Foinavon & L'Escargot the only other winners post-war. Understand your point though. With 40 runners & loose horses, it must be advantageous to have a clear view - which is a worry for one of my a/p bets Point Barrow

8/40 wore headgear last year.

Their S.P.'s were...

12/1, 80/1, 14/1, 33/1, 66/1, 16/1, 125/1, 100/1.

No wonder they don't have a great record if this is the norm.

A few of them were complete no hopers, and McKelvey nearly won it.

its only my opinion but i think for this type of race, you need a "genuine" horse that shows a willingness to go the extreme distance of this race...now there will be always horses who buck the trend ala comply or die in the eider. but i think in a race as tough as this, if a horse is even in the smallest bit ungenuine, it will come to the fore

You could argue about ungenuine horses wearing blinkers and not appreciating the gruelling nature of the race also, but I'd rather asses the horse on it's own merits and wouldn't let it put me off one.

Diamond Joe

If you are suggesting that black apalachi is in any way ungenuine, you know nothing about racing.

I think he's speaking generally TGM.

When: 24 Mar 08 22:08
i'm speaking generally TGM about headgear.

I don't think BA is ungenuine, i just don't think he is good enough
By:
black apalachi
When: 24 Mar 08 22:48
Irrespective of headgear trends, has anyone else noticed that "black apalachi" is an anagram of "a cab lack la hip." Seeing as most cabs do not actually have hips this could be an unconsidered angle but may be crucial at the finish.

He does not appear well h'capped, are you suggesting the trip is just what he requires?
By:
thegalwayman
When: 25 Mar 08 15:10
I am suggesting that the trip will bring out the best in him as he is an out and out stayer. Has been running with far more consistency and jumping much better since the stable switch.
By:

will he run?

giving the irish nat. a miss,i think we will see him line up here...along with cornish sett, these are my 2 huge price hopes.
By:

When: 25 Mar 08 17:49
def needs soft ground which is unlikely at this stage. on good ground or faster can see it being ran off its feet early on.
By:
The Sweaty Sock
When: 25 Mar 08 20:32
Think it will be on the soft side
By:

When: 25 Mar 08 21:17
Needs 9 to come out to get a run (assuming 40 is the max). Doumen is only 'hopeful' than Kelami will make the cut and he's rated a 1lb higher than BA.
By:
thegalwayman
When: 25 Mar 08 21:38
BA is definitely going for the race and will hopefully get in. He most definitely needs at least soft ground.

Doubtful stayer in my opinion, sorry cant have him,as thats a pre requisite.Sorry.
By:
thegalwayman
When: 26 Mar 08 23:30
He is not a doubtful stayer. He stays like the mother in law. He stays like an asylum seeker. I concur with Dessie Hughes in thinking that he will win the race.
