I considered him to be overated before. He was being talked up as a horse on the level of the best we have seen, worth a rating of near 140, and he was priced as such.
I didn't know what to make of his form beforehand, he had beaten the Aussie middle diatance horses easily , but, as far as i know , only the Aussie sprinters are competitive with the world's best , so that meant nothing much to me . He had shown himself to be 20 lb superior to horses in Ireland that i would rate sub 110, so i tentatively rated him @127, which means he is a Group 1 horse, better than most Group 1 horses , but well below the superstar Frankel/STS level . After the race i would still have him at 127, but there are reasons to think he could be somewhat better than that: The way he buried Twice Over and Planteur so long before the end, pulled clear with seemingly little effort, and really looked like a spectacular winner. Rewilding, who i considered Group 2 class before the race, made an immense effort , the sort you think might not be repeatable, and i would make So You Think Fav if they meet again. I would not make him fav vs Workforce, but would against any of the other current middle distance horses, though not vs some of those that might step up from a mile. I doubt you will get a good price though as the 'he wasn't fit' excuse (Coolmore always insisting their horse is better than he showed ) will be taken as gospel by the people who lumped on at 4/11, as they will not like to admit to themselves that they got it wrong in backing him so short this time. |

All it takes is smarter tactics and he wins easily. By setting up a false pace(no horse could go as fast as Jan vermeer and win) it set it up for the stronger stayer in Rewilding. Cant go along with the better horse winning as Rewilding needed pacemakers to win. Put them in a 2 horse match race and SYT wins evry time.

to say that only aussie sprinters are competitive with the worlds best is a lttle presumptious. we send our sprinters to the northern hemisphere to inflate their stud value. or in joe's case with takeover target, to escape life in a caravan.the prizemoney in australia and hong kong is so superior to the northern hemisphere [excluding dubai] makes it pointless to send our classic horses north.frankel would be extremely competitive in our cox plate and 2 million pounds is a lot of reasons for him to come down, and workforce is obviously a world class champion but so you think is a gross stallion who's had a wind operation and needs racing to get fit so he will improve enormously on that run and when he does he wont be beaten again.

The race was an absolute shambles the the pacemaker knocking So Ya Think over [smiley:crazy]
As for Australia only having top sprinters - I just laugh at those pommies. Many of the Aussie champions of the past have never traveled to the UK. They don't have to as the prizemoney is weak in the UK. Horses like Kingston Town and Might and Power would have bolted in in Group One's in the UK, would have done it on their ear. Even our weak Haradasun won a Group race in the UK. |
|
By:
Scott135, well said, they think we have some kind of third rate racing system over here yet on paper our racing industry is superior at nearly every level.
You can pretty well say our trainers, jockeys, prizemoney, bookmakers, punters and horses are vastly superior on a weighted population level given we are a country of 20 million people. Quite Frankly i doubt Aidan O'Brien would last 5 minutes over here as a trainer. At the end of the day we are the ones selling people $20 or $30 million dollar shares in this horse, not the other way round. ......WAKE UP! ![]() |

By:
A Failure ? Obviously he is very talented , so no failure .
No , what pisses me off is the hype surrounding the horse - from Ballydoyle , yet again , and a few loud mouthed Aussies - and the way people leave their brains behind and get sucked in by it all. |
|

SYT used too much at the start cos of jan vameer's awful start. Then you have the fact that the pace after that suited rewilding + rewilding ran a great race. Add into that (the possibility) that he was underdone and you have some decent excuses. I say possibility becos all i've heard from people is that Aiden O'brien talks crap every year.
Incidentally, I heard someone say it was a new course record in some manner? Either on the new track? Or on that type of ground? Duno, maybe someone can confirm either way. |

And one more thing...
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/superracing/aidan-obriens-crazy-for-so-you-think/story-fn67r1j3-1226073892021 "But we haven't stepped up his work because we feel he is doing it comfortably and doing it within himself. We are very happy with how he is going at the moment. "As I said, we haven't done that much with him in training because we feel he is such a natural horse. "We are just hoping we have done enough with him for Royal Ascot. I'm confident we have." I recall reading this a few days ago and for a fleeting moment I thought it might be a problem, but then I thought nah. Not even sure it's worth noting this - although it does show that he had, albeit very small, misgivings about the light prep. |

By:
Just like their cricketers, all mouth and nothing to back it up
|
|
By:
advantage aussie you make good points but you say you will back him next time , surley he needs to sidestep rewilding tho as frankies mount beat him fairly comfortably in the end , i wouldnt want to bet so you think in any rematch.

Its not rocket science.
SYT came over here on the back of some extremely bullish comments (and I am charitably ignoring Bart Cummings here) which were pumped up in the usual Coolmore fashion. After 2 straightforward wins against vastly inferior opposition he stepped up and was found wanting against a good but far from vintage horse in Rewilding. The "light prep" argument is far from convincing as his previous race was little over 3 weeks ago. The posters on Oz will just have to live with the fact that their best middle distance performer in years simply isn't up to the top Northern Hemisphere standard. FWIW I agree 100% with Tobermory rating him in the high 120s - which still makes him a damned good horse. |
|
By:
Got a terrible ride and deserves rating as much the best horse in the race.

they didnt st the track rec.

From what I saw, it wasn't easy getting past So You Think. Ask Frankie if he really needed to hit Rewilding 24 times in the last 2 forlongs to win easily by a neck? LOL
In a re-match, given he's not at silly odds this time, I'd be on So You Think in a heatbeat. |
|
By:
I also think SYT should have won yesterday but some of the Aussie posters on here are deluded. Perhaps the should get the form book translated into Oz for them to read it.
This horse had wings and was the best thing they have produced in years and until he proves otherwise the Oz form is still some way behind Europe, prize money or no prize money. |
|
By:
I didnt say Rewilding won easy , but i do think he won comfortably (big difference) and he is a very strong stayer , the thing is will you ever any any great value on So You Thinks price given the horses reputaion/connections ?
|
|
By:
I don't think anybody except possibly Aiden O'Brien claimed he was the best horse in the world.
My expectations when he left Australia were that he would be competitive in any race he contests, especially at his pet distance 1M2F where he is very hard to beat. Nothing I've seen so far changes that point of view. |
|
By:
Pour Moi would eat it for breakfast
When Frankel eventually steps up to 10f SYT will not even be in the same camera shot going over the line SYT a good horse, say around 130 |

Like all the jocks not riding in the Prince of Wales's Stakes I was glued to the TV in the changing room. I had a good look at them going down and although I had been very impressed by So You Think in his previous races he didn’t look a particularly nice ride going to post and in the race proper he always seemed to be doing too much and despite all Ryan did, the choke was permanently out. No matter how good a horse is — and you can’t do what that horse has done and not be — it’s impossible to expend the amount of energy that he did. In my opinion if he’d relaxed he’d have won. Having said all that, he very nearly got away with it and it took a brilliant ride from Frankie to take the race aboard Rewilding. But there was a serious sting in the stewards room afterwards when he was given a nine day suspension for frequent use of the whip. It’s a wake up call for all of us. If we break the rules then we can expect to get a hefty ban and make no mistake, this will be a very costly one for Frankie because it knocks him out of the Eclipse meeting at Sandown and comes on top of the suspension he got for easing down at Epsom which means he misses the end of Ascot. But we don’t have an excuse because we all know that the whip is now a very sensitive subject — there was a feature on it on BBC News on Tuesday night — and the image of racing has got to be protected. We are all walking a very fine line and we’ve got to do our best not to step off it. The message to us is very clear. |

Does the word 'humility' appear in Australian dictionaries, or is there no space for it, with all the synonyms of 'mouth' to be fitted in?
|
|
By:
This made me chuckle , from a Gary from Dagenham in Today's Post :
" Remind me again how far Workforce beat Rewilding in a race 'not worth two bob' at Epsom ? Save your wisdom for two-mile handicaps , Bart Cummings" . |

Does the word 'humility' appear in Australian dictionaries?
Judging by the "Have your say" comments in todays Telegraph the answer is no ![]() http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/superracing/so-you-think-beaten-in-prince-of-waless-stakes-at-royal-ascot/story-fn67r1j3-1226076055631 |

Glass Harmonium and My Kingdom of Fife are beating the same horses as SYT did(Shoot Out/Ginga Dude) and i couldnt see them being 4/11 for a group 1
![]() Still it did make for my best RA bet of this year a massive price |
|
By:
Ginga dude ran 1 good race last spring, every other 1 he's not been any good. Shoot out hasn't run well all autumn.
My kingdom of fife / Glass harmonium have not beaten any of aussie's top horses. Glass harmonium has only raced in Queensland for god's sake, barely any of the proper horses ever come up to Queensland. Anywho, I really think SYT ran well with all things considered. And I presume the pacemaker was because they felt rewilding had no hope and that getting into a sit and sprint against planteur wasn't the best tactic. Having said that they obviously stuffed up the start - and if you really think the start didn't take a lot out of the horse then you're wrong. |
|
By:
But 4/11 was hardly a gift
![]() Dont get me wrong, i spent 6 great months in OZ many years ago, lived in Darlinghurst and then moved over to freemantle where i had a ball, Clerked at Belmont Park found the racing cheap, the facilites good and the Sheila's obliging ![]() I just think some of you lads had your patriotic punting glass's on to punting at that kind of price ![]() |
|
By:
I was simply trying to say you shouldn't be misleading by claiming fife/harmonium are somehow beating the same stuff SYT did, when it's simply not true.
But in terms of the price, I did think frankel/SYT was the bet of the carnival becos that gave near evens. I never actually considered punting on syt alone. And I even backed out of CC/Frankel/SYT and just went Frankel/CC, admittedly i didn't put enough on that one to cover my losses on the Frankel/SYT bet ![]() But anyway. I think there are valid excuses for yesterday, whether the excuses carry as much weight as I think they do, maybe not because I am probably biased. But there will always be people biased in the other direction, ie saying he has no excuses for yesterday - bias comments even up the argument. |

Is Sam Newman(You idiot
) still on telly down there??Used to love the footie show ![]() |

Plenty of valid excuses tj
But cannot think horse is in absolute top drawer |
|
By:
Didn't think the Southern Hemisphere's answer to Pegasus needed excuses, when competing in 'two bob racing'?
|
|
By:
There aren't plenty of excuses. O'Brien's "Stepford Wives" approach to horseracing got the horse beaten. He's saying SYT was under-trained but the person who knows the horse best, Cummings, is bang on the money with his assessment in the RP:
http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/bart-cummings-australia-so-you-think-underdone-cummings/871943/top/# Rather than let the horse do what he does best and rely on his natural ability O'Brien's tried to remould him into his formulaic pacemaking BS approach and it has failed, spectacularly (he even had a pacemaker for the Mickey Mouse Mooresbridge Stakes ffs). Rewilding has only ever beaten one truly top class horse - SYT - and all he did was kick for home at the right time. Steve Arnold wouldn't have been beaten on the horse - unless he was riding to O'Brien's instructions. |
|
By:
Rewilding off a 2 month break or longer is a very decent animal, sadly i think they will go King George where imo, he'll bounce to the moon.
If he was mine he'd go International and Breeders Cup Turf |
|
By:
Of course he is Zilzal
...not that any of our antipodean friends would be that familiar with the formbook, when there's all those column inches from 'Mouth Almighty' Cummings to read. |
|
By:
Rewilding isn't a very decent animal, he's mediocre (in terms of Group 1). He'll get turned over in the King George because he's not good enough, nothing to do with any bounce.
|
|
By:
Well I notice not many knockers are pointing out where plantuer and twice over finished. Or the fact that the time was a very very solid one.
Incidentally, a lot you are taking cummings comment about the racing not being worth 2 bob well out of context. |
|
By:
tommy, neither Planteur nor Twice Over ran their races so it's pointless concentrating on that.
It will be interesting to hear what connections have to say about Planteur's running because he's a better horse than Rewilding. |
|
By:
Twice over id probably the luckiest group 1 winner on the planet, hes been placed very well though to win his races but imo hes not top class
|
|
By:
Tommy you can point to Twice Over and Plantuer.
I can also point out that he beat the 113 rated Sri Putra by 6 lengths. Previously at the Curragh he beat the 116 rated Campanologist 4..5 lengths. Both runs suggest his rating of 126 is about right on what he has achieved over here. |
