Lovely job, what a run that was. 29.18 seconds of poetry in motion.
I was praying for one more smash break and bang, there it was right on cue.
A tremendous greyhound and a hugely exciting competition right the way through.

Well done Slippy and other winners, lets be honest if the 5 dogs running behind had glided around the first bend the

result would have been the same, cliche i know but  " the race was won out the traps ".

It was a pity that the first bend was a mess, but even without it would they have given her 3 lengths and caught her, I’d have been amazed if something had.

Saw Ger at White City when the huge and very knowledgeable White City crowd gave him an impromptu ovation as he walked infield with his great dog Shamrock Point, so wrongly done out of a final spot.  It made the hairs stand on the back of your neck.  As I recall he won the Consolation in a time 30 spots faster that the Derby winner - Tartan Khan - so it is not unusual for that to happen on final night.

That happened in the 1983 L.H. The only final night I went to at White City when I'm  Slippy won. HaymakerMack broke the track record in the consolation final that night.

From TALKING DOGS

REACTION ON THE NIGHT
Ian Fortune

Owen McKenna was understandably a popular man after the Derby final.

Speaking to Barry Caul, Robert Catterson and Sarah Kinsella, it was clear the victory of Susie Sapphire meant so much to a man hailing from the most famous greyhound family in the history of the sport.

Speaking with Robert Catterson on RPGTV, Owen suggested that his legendary father, the late great Ger McKenna, may have played a part in the success, saying: “This is everything. It means a lot. I went up Thursday to visit my mother in Borrisokane. She’ll be watching tonight. She’ll be delighted. I called into the graveyard to see the old boy and I said ‘if you could ever push her over the line for us, give us one more effort’ and you know what, everything went right.”

He went on describe his star, “She knows what you’re thinking. She’s come out of every race. I’m just delighted. It’s just great, I’ve had great dogs over the years beat in the final, last year Pestana, we had Farloe Blitz back in 2015, I was desperate disappointed for Paul Ellis in two Derby finals. Tonight was worth it all.”

“I WON’T COME DOWN FOR A WEEK”

He echoed those words as he walked back up the track with Barry Caul of Talking Dogs TV: “This is everything. I won’t come down to earth for a week. She’s some little lady, she’s dynamite. She has gone from strength to strength, and everything that’s been asked of her, she has done.

“I didn’t see the break but once she went around the bend, it was going to take a helluva something to pass her. She’s a Derby champion, an Oaks champion, a Puppy Oaks champion – probably a chance of getting Dog of the Year now.”

When the dust had settled somewhat, Sarah Kinsella managed to catch up with Owen at the kennelling area and he again expressed how he was feeling: “You don’t appreciate things when you are younger, you think ah this is handy. But it’s taken a long time, we’ve hit the crossbar several times since. It’s hard to surpass what she has done for us. It’s easy for us to look good when you have something on the end of a lead as good as her. She’s just amazing. I can’t say enough about her.”

“SO PROUD OF HER”

Owen also expressed how much this meant to his family and Robert Catterson caught up with Owen’s wife Sian. A clearly emotional Sian said: “We’re so, so proud of her. She’s been an unreal bitch for us this year. From the Puppy Oaks, we put her into the Oaks, and took a chance with her. She went through that, won that, and then we stuck her in this thinking we’ll just give her a go, and every round she went from strength to strength. She’s just unreal, just amazing. It’s crazy what she has achieved, for such a young bitch, and we’re just over the moon.

“Owen eats it, he sleeps it, and he puts the greyhounds first. That’s just him. I’m so happy for him, and so proud of him. We’ll go home with happy tears tonight because last year we were on such a high going into the final, and then disaster struck.

“At the beginning of the year we didn’t think we had anything to run in the Derby this year, and we said we’d give her a go, and now we’re here.”
