I assume we do not count Watford as qualifying as London.
|
|
By:
Further to Watford, I understand it is within the M25.
|
|
By:
it is just inside sparrow, should we be useing the M25 though for london tracks though? maybe the north circular?
|
|
By:
could do with another ring between the two, NC is too inner and the m25 is too outer

Watford seems to count as in Greater London, but that would also bring in Hoddesdon where Rye House was situated.
So I suppose you are right in Questioning the use of the M25 and Greater London. |

By:
The Staines track, which was outside town, may have been situated just inside the M25. If not, then it was just the other side!

I Guess the best way to find out the rest is look at the list of defunct speedway tracks in london.
Was there greyhound racing at crystal palace? i dont know but just found this below. In 1926 motorcycle enthusiasts led by Fred Mockford and Cecil Smith, formed a group called London Motor Sports Ltd, and having identified Crystal Palace Park as a racing venue, were eventually allowed to run a meeting on May 21st 1927 over a 1 mile course of the parks paths. Over 10,000 people turned up to the meeting each paying 1 shilling plus 2d tax (approx. 6p). Following an incident during the meeting, several spectators were injured by a sidecar and questions were asked in Parliament about the incident. By the second meeting £500 had been invested in crash barriers, widening and general improvement of the circuit. Some 16,000 attended this meeting and the scene was set for racing to rival cricket, football, and greyhound racing at the venue. |

Think i've found another
![]() Edmonton Greyhound Track. Greyhound stadium? There isn't a greyhound stadium in Lower Edmonton you cry. However Peter Cartwright assures me that there was once and its entrance was in Eastbournia Avenue. It was certainly in use in the 1930s but I should imagine wasn't much older than that because greyhound racing only started becoming really popular then. How long it lasted I don't know but Peter reports it was totally derelict by the late 1950s. Debbie chips in that it was a flapping track. Peter says the nearest current point to the location is Barrowfield Close and I believe he means the site has been developed on. There is an area between the allotments and Montagu Road and just north of Salmon's Brook that looks like it was probably developed in the early 1960s. The unused communal yards with posts for washing lines somewhat date it to a more innocent time. There are also allotments there that could have been the site. Sometimes I think a c. 1960 streetmap could be handy... Richard Burton sent in a clip from a 1930s Geographia London Atlas that shows a 'Greyhound Race Course' in green space between Tramway Avenue and Tudor Road. Gary Boudier has a map that suggests this was a training track rather that a racecourse. When it appeared and when it disappeared is an unknown to me. It does say TRAINING TRACK tho so im not sure also someone said it was a flap? |

Im not sure about Micham, it may have been another track? just found this
Streatham and Mitcham were boosted by the signings of overseas stars such as New Zealand full-back George Nepia.[2] In their first season the club attracted an average crowd of over 10,000 fans, with crowds of up to 20,000. A Sunday Express article on December 15, 1935 headlined "Blow for London club players: more support needed". In 1936, the average crowd dropped to 5,000, when a crowd of 10,000 was more required to break even. On the day that they raised 10,162 against Rochdale Hornets, they had to cut the wages of the players, despite winning the game. On one home match day in the middle of the season the gate was £97 outgoings for players against £105 outgoings, the major problem was the wage bill. Greyhound racing had been intended to ensure the venture was viable, however, that had its own costs and was struggling in this period too. However, falling crowds and rising costs forced the club to disband by March 1937. |

Both were larcenous long shots, but the Dagenham dog track betting coup beats England's Great Train Robbery of last summer for sheer engineered sneakiness. And if the bookies had not got together and refused to pay the plotters, the profit to the gang that **** the odds at Dagenham would have come to about $28 million, considerably more than the train bandits got for working harder.
The gang of bettors struck last week at Dagenham Greyhound Stadium near London. About 100 of them manned the 31 tote windows, stalling and strong-arming customers away while they made forecast bets on dogs they did not expect to win, thus running up the odds on the favorites. Simultaneously, more confederates in London bet similarly with bookmakers, and tied up all telephone lines to the track so bookies could not lay off the bets and reduce the odds. Result: The tote payoff coupling the first and second dogs was at 9,872 to 1 odds, and the gang stood to clean up. Then the bookies struck back. |

Harringay Greyhound Stadium on Green Lanes opened in 1927. It was originally called Harringay Park. It was the second track in London owned by the Greyhound Racing Association. The first was at White City. In the 1930s crowds of over 10,000 and more than 395 bookies attended Harringay Stadium. Greyhound racing WTF... 395 Bookies ![]() |
