jimbo - i saw it once on here and bookmarked it. white city was before my time, but it does look amazing. i always wondered how anybody in charge of the sport could let such a brilliant and important track close...then i saw how they stood by and did nothing as walthamstow shut.

yer i know what you mean! every track once has big glory nights didnt they, now you look at thoose left and you just know they anit got long! they all look old and out of the times! the don is a great example, it needs a complete make over,i remember my only visit to the stow about 20 years ago, i was working in the city on the hod, payday come thursday afternoon went to the bookies on the way home (about 3.30pm) won a monkey and decided to visit the stow for a night out , dirty work clothes still on i had a great night , always remember that night , got sloshed miissed the last train home had to pay £60 fo a cab back to southend , great days.

Wolsey I stuck that up a few months back,maybe where u seen it,
told Tony Morris he was in a psycadelic movie ,dont think hes seen it ,he doesnt use the web ..Still think of the place as I drive over the westway shi tty bbc building there now ,what a waste.Hard to believe whats happened to our great sport Jimbo got many a Cab from the city late at night to go me mates who had already gone out ,foooked if i were missing a meeting :-) |

case - i was watching it and a bloke i know is one of the bookies in it.
i rang him and he said to me 'yeah, the white city. what a place that was. do u know how much i fielded one derby final nite, 12 races, in the late 70s?' i went 'nah, go on' ' 72 grand - 6k a race. 70 grand would have bought u 3 houses back then. and i was only the fiddler, after the small money, not one of the big boys'. yeah, the games in a total mess. |

One Derby night, the late John White painted up the prices for each race & bet right through to the off without changing a single one.
In fairness, I was told that the "honours" that his workmen recieved broke the track record. |

Saw BALLINISKA BAND at Harringay a few months before the Derby and it went 20 lengths clear down the back straight and won 8L.
Thought when its fit it will win the Derby. Backed it myself also Casemoney. CASE MONEY , also an excellent fawn |

Saturday morning, used to go up to London for 11.00 Hackney, and on to Harringay 2.05 when all the racing was frosted off, then on to Whiite City 7.30 in the evening. Some even did the first 4 or 5 races at Stamford Bridge (6.45 start) before shooting over to the White City by cab. Them was the days ! |

Most memorable Derby race was the semi final when Camira Flash, ante post favourite before the start of the competition and OWNED BY THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, finished 4th in the Semi.
For the first and last time ever, the 3rd Lively Band was disqualified and Camira Flash made the Final.............and WON Remember all the bookies wooden boxes going on to the track that night. LIVELY BAND went on to win the Consolation Final in a time quicker than the Final. Memorable. |

Being told to punt Ellas Penguin in an S3, I was about 14, had £40 at 9-4, black cab back to Deptford after, great great place, many happy memories

Mike lively band was disqualified the year Tartan Khan won,it attacked Shamrock Point Ger Mckennas dog who finished 4th,
consequently the final was a 5 dog race Myrtown was jolly . Camira Flash was a little early for me. |

I'd love to see Tartan Khan's final again. Hare was slowed at the third bend causing Sallys Cobbler to check wide.

My first visit was on Boxing Day 1952. The racing surface was sewn-in straw (no undersoil heating in those days) & I can still remember the two winners that I backed........."Mark Anthony" & "Minorcas Hope"

Mr Memory. Interested in your post about the late John White as my father used to clerk for him in the 50s and 60s at White City. Also for his brother Siddy at Stamford Bridge. John as I remember was a decent bloke.

When he & his son used to walk about together on the racecourse, the workmen used to refer to them as "The Sheriff & The Deputy" Was his brother the top man tic-tac at the White City ? |

Mr Memory. I think I can recall my father mentioning him as a tic tac although I am not sure as It was so long ago. My Father did not rate him in the same class as John though as a bookmaker
