SBS Tournament of Champions

Seoul Broadcasting System (a national South Korean television and radio network) is the title sponsor at the deceiving 7,450 yard, par 73 Coore/Crenshaw designed Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui...

ALOHA, agus céad míle fáilte go Hawaii Five-0.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w

The breathtaking views may distract some of the line-up with 32 Tour winners of 38 that qualify from the 2016 calendar year including six of the T10 from the OWG Ranking with no shows from Rors Deutsche Bank Champ & TOUR Champ, Scott Honda Classic & WGC-Cadillac Champ, Henrik The OPEN Champ, Willett Masters Champ, Schwartzel Valspar Champ and Sergio AT&T Byron Nelson winner.

PGA TOUR Player of the Year Dustin Johnson 6/1, Defending champion Jordan Spieth 11/2, the red-hot Hideki ‘Hero’ Matsuyama 5/1 fav & 2015 winner Paddy Reed 14/1 are a-top of the betting, with other Ryder Cup stars Brandt Snedeker 18/1, Jimmy Walker & Ryan Moore are among the 21 yanks. There are no European RC stars at Kapalua but shoulda coulda woulda Travelers Champ Russell Knox holds the Euro-fort on his second appearance on these shores (only 27th last year)...... Poor Paddy the only one going 5 places. Wink

OWGR #1 Just-in DAY 9/1 last seen in September is one of four Aussies with Pampling last seen here in 2007 while it’s Baddeley’s third visit since ‘07, ’08 & 2012 and it’s Greg Chalmers’ debut.

Ten other players also make their debuts (no first-time winner since Chopra ’08), while eight players are making only their second visit (incl. Matsuyama 3rd in 2015, with Thomas 21st & Knox 27th last year). Four players haven’t been back since at least 2012, incl Badds, while the longest absentee is Vaughn Taylor, making his third visit since a 4th place in ‘06 (also 8th in ’05).

Three previous winners in the field this week: 2016 Spieth USA (262, -30); 2015 Reed USA (271, -21); 2014 Zach Johnson USA (-19); 2013 Dustbin Johnson USA (69,66,68 for 203, -16 over 54 holes – a little windy); 2012 Stricker USA (269, -23); 2011 Jonathan Byrd USA (-24); 2010 & 2009 Geoff Ogilvy; 2003 Ernie Els (261, -31, the 72 hole event TOUR record).

‘Key to Kapalua’ is wedge it close and convert on the par 4s. Eight of the par 4s measure 420 yards or less so see Berger putt for eagle yet it’s no bombers paradise. Need an opening 69, -4 or better in Rd.1. to win and the good news is everyone makes the cut!

Find a pub for a few late wans, as TV coverage begins at 23.00pm on Thursday night (well after the first tee off time at 20.20pm).

All the history stats...
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15HxQI6nGjZoiBwSWSpl67uVRgnfl9iMzoWYhKgV1o1E/pubhtml

The usual trade-winds are forecast throughout but will freshen on the weekend, with temps up to 80 degrees every day......might as well stay in Hawaii for the Sony Open next week!!!
Anyone else played this track ?

SO THEN...
Jordan Spieth-less.....23yo will defend to match Tiger with a second Hawaiian Lei.
Hideki Matsuyama.....T3 in 2015 (272, -20) was not beginners luck. Easy Hero Champ.
Brandt Snedeker.....3, 11, 3 in last 4 years does it for moi. Let it blow !
Paddy Reed.....2, 1, 16 in last 3 years means he likes it a lot better here.
Dustbin Johnson.....10, 6, Won 2013, 9, 16, 11 his record here in last 8 years.
Danny Berger.....Tops the 11 debutants as a Bermuda grass specialist and LONG.

OTHERS...
Justin Thomas.....21st last year on his debut and defended well in K.L.
Jimmy Walker.....Major Champ reads 10, 2nd, 21 last three years so just hope 2017 isn’t a downer.
Bubba Watson.....OWGR #10 was 4th in 2013, his best of 5 attempts.
Fabian Gomez 6th last year and Fed Ex St Jude Champ in 2015 with 267 by 4 shots for first win in his 70th career start.
My man lefty GRIBBLE (first man off the tee) a lively outsider.

Maybe some DAY the World #1 will come back here again and win, just not this year.

Daniel Berger is "pumped to join the Callaway Golf team! New Epic driver is ridiculous. Ready to kick things off with the new gear this week in Maui!"

Branden Grace "The new GBB EPIC sub zero, straight in the bag for Hawaii, easiest change ever!!"

Monty and Willett will also put to the test shortly.

All over Jimmy Walker. Long driver, top class scrambler and sound putter when on form. Main weakness last year was accuracy offthe tee, apart from Baltrusol when he won the PGA. If hes rejuvenated then 28/1 is big.

Spieth looks a worthy fav to me here and despite his recent form, struggling to see why Hideki is the same price when there is such a premium on putting.

Saver on Snedeker who has good course form and obviously putts well as anyone.

day seems a bit big in such a limited field, a bombers paradise as well, 9-1 in places worth taking despite the worries about coming back off an injury. I know matsuyama been in great form lately but does he really deserve to be four points shorter than the world number one?

I went for a bet at Sportsbook earlier. €100 @ 5/1, was going to lay off on Betfair but then thought why the rush. Leave it there as back up for the weekend. Speith at full throttle will win by 2 or 3 shots. Hopefully the break will have his attitude to putting back on a level platform.
Noticing the prizefund of 6.4 mill $ to be played for over 4 days in this beautiful spot, why would any parent not want their young ones to try their hand at this golf lark.

Looking at the earlier match betting, firms must make a packet on the dead heats if the turnover can be achieved. Marketing by Betfair has been poor and indeed they upseta lot of loyal customers last weekend by sending emails awarding the Cash Race monies and subsequently renaging on their email. Still waiting for a GESTURE of good will from them.

Which golfers have won on the PGA Tour for the most years in a row? Here are the golfers who won at least once in the most consecutive years:

17 Years in a Row.....• Jack Nicklaus, 1962-78 • Arnold Palmer, 1955-71
16 Years in a Row.....• Billy Casper, 1956-71

In Nicklaus' 17-year streak, he won at least twice in each of those seasons. His first win was the 1962 U.S. Open, and the final win in his 17-year run was the 1978 IVB-Philadelphia Golf Classic. Nicklaus won 68 times during the stretch, including 15 majors.

In Palmer's 17-year stretch, he had three years with only one victory: 1955, 1965 and 1970. The first win in this period for Palmer was the 1955 Canadian Open and the last the 1971 National Team Championship. Coincidentally, Palmer's partner in that 2-man team event was Nicklaus. Palmer won 61 times during his streak, including seven majors.

Tiger Woods' streak of 14 years (1996-2009) ended when he went winless in PGA Tour events in 2010.

DUSTBIN JOHNSON is currently a winner for the last 9 seasons with REED next on 4 years.

You can find the answer to questions like that here http://www.tour-tips.com/  It's free for the first 4 weeks of the season.

Go to in/out of contention, put 1 in position, and 1 in round, gives you position of all 1st round leaders for as  many years you choose, 557 1st round leaders in your 5 year period.
