With his 5-under 65 on Day 3 Thomas surged his way to 22-under 188 – tying Steve Stricker’s mark of best opening 54 holes on the PGA TOUR (although Stricker was 25-under 188 at the John Deere Classic in 2010). Thomas will be seeking to become the fourth player to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in wire-to-wire fashion (no ties) and join K.J. Choi (2008), Paul Azinger (2000 and Howard Twitty (1993) and also will become the first player to win both the Tournament of Champions and Sony Open in Hawaii in the same season - since Ernie Els in 2003.
Have Thomas + Spieth & Kisner for the placings. Sneds & Kjeldsen both MC |

Darth_Monty - The only thing that can stop Justin Thomas winning in Hawaii is if he went on the piss with Allenby after his round yesterday.

HONOLULU, Hawaii - wire to wire & back to back for Justin Thomas who becomes the youngest player in history to shoot 59 on the PGA TOUR with his epic opening round at the Sony Open at Waialae CC fresh off claiming his third TOUR victory at the SBS Tournament of Champions. With eight birdies and two eagles to bookend his round, Justin is just the second player behind Furyk (who has shot a 58 and a 59 on TOUR) to be sub-60 with a bogey on the card.
Thomas became just the seventh individual to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA TOUR. He joined illustrious company with Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval, Paul Goydos, Stuart Appleby and Mr 58 in that exclusive club and at just 23-years-old is by far the youngest to do so. Duval was 27 when he managed the feat at this week’s Tour stop, the CareerBuilder Challenge, back in 1999. “We all know it's the magical number in golf. I knew I had a great chance in Malaysia last year, and I was really honestly pretty bummed when that didn't happen” - JT. Thomas also went on to do what Geiberger, Duval and Appleby achieved – win the god damn tournament!!! The new OWGR #8 finish off his third appearance on 27-under 253, good for a 7-shot win over Justin Rose, his fourth PGA title in his 74th career start (70 pro), and setting a new 72-hole aggregate scoring record on TOUR. |

ALOHA, agus céad míle fáilte go Hawaii Five-0.
![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w A little Hawaiian Island hopping from MAUI to OAHU for this week’s SONY OPEN at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu for the PGA TOUR's first full-field event of the year attracting 144 of the world's finest golfers. In 2018, Waialae Country Club will be fifty-three years hosting the PGA TOUR - only exceeded by just three other venues. The Hawaiian Open started in 1965, and the tournament has been played every year with the exception of 1970, when a schedule change moved it from fall to winter. In 1999, it became the Sony Open in Hawaii. Sony Corporation extended its commitment to sponsor the tournament through 2018 - the 20th anniversary of title sponsor entitlement of the tournament. |

Jim "Bones" Mackay is on the bag !
Justin Thomas returns to the scene of his infamous '59' as he prepares for a title defense at this week's Sony Open in Hawaii WITHOUT his regular caddy. Thomas cruised to victory - opened the week with an 11-under 59 and then added rounds of 64-65-65. (He led by 3, 5, 7, and 7 as the week progressed). Regular caddie, Jimmy Johnson will be sidelined for at least a month (Plantar fasciitis a common cause of heel pain). Justin's dad caddie last week, but for the SONY he's got Jim "Bones" Mackay on the bag. With Phil Mickelson never playing in the Sony Open, Mackay's knowledge of the course will be limited but that shouldn't be a problem for Thomas who will be playing this course for the fourth year in a row. It's will be interesting to see how the duo mesh. His 8/1 compares a bit better to 5's for Spieth. ![]() |

Curtis Luck & Jason Kokrak (changing nappies again) are both taking a pass on a trip to Hawaii, thus Adam Long earns a start and first alternate Roberto Diaz.
Ian Poulter, who, after winning last spring's Houston Open, was aware he was going to fall short of the PGA Tour minimum starts rule, so as he was planning on attending the Tournament of Champions, he added the Sony Open to settled the 'new tournament' rule (to appear in a tournament they haven't been in four years) to settle his 'punishment'. In addition, he also entertained eight guests for a round of golf (played 9 holes with each) and a visit to his Orlando home and Car Museum/Ryder Cup Office. The Wyndham Championship was one Poulter could have played under normal circumstances, but that would have given him nine straight weeks leading up to the Ryder Cup - so he let Wyndham select the guests who they wanted to send to Orlando. “We had a great time,” Poulter said. Nice touch, and added over $100k (so far) to his account for his trip to Hawaii ![]() |

Texas Longhorn Dylan Frittelli is staying in competitive mode having played trice in December (at home in Africa - T5-MC-T12) as he plays his first full season as a card-carrying member of the PGA TOUR. The 4-time winner (2 Euro & 2 Challenge Tour) is one of the best ball-strikers on the planet, long off the tee but, importantly here, is also more accurate than the TOUR average and is comfortable on Bermuda - "I play a lot of golf on Bermuda back home in America, and a few PGA Tour events, as well as a few mainland Europe events, but I felt at home." 80/1 ew over-the-cliff-we-go

Belatedly joining you with a small tickle on Ancer, Rhino. One of the form players in the world before Christmas so unless he spent the festive season mainlining heroin he's drifted to a fair old price.

From the pressers
Defending champion Patton Kizzire did what was expected and spoke favourably of the tournament, the area, the people and so on, but there's no denying he does play his best golf under Sony Open conditions and has cause for confidence this week. "It feels good (to be back), he said. "I told my wife, Kari, when we got here, I said, I just feel comfortable here. It's so nice staying right on the beach; country club feel. Everybody in Hawaii is nice so it feels good." What he should have said there is 'everbody in Hawaii is nice except for Bob Allenby's kidnappers', but there we have it. ![]() https://www.sportinglife.com/golf/news/kirk-fancied-for-fast-start/157092 |

welcome back meng. Rhino how about Clemson - Lawrence is going to be a monster in the nfl - and to think he can't be drafted for another 2 years!

Spent a lot of time following the European Tour in 2018. What I took out of it was the emergence of more and more Asians making the grade. If I am correct, it should continue across the Atlantic but may take more than 1 season. Just a thought. Im keeping my tipping to myself as it was so poor last season and do not want to steer decent punters away from good bets.

Not much sign of the usual birdie fest so far. Can't see much in the weather forecast to explain it.

15 pars on the bounce for Abraham, wish I'd known that was the plan before I backed him.

am more surprised by Woodland, had him as a cert to contend this week. |

Lawrence is pretty special Hank. Would be the no 1 pick if he went now, 2 more years is nuts.

I just hope he doesn't get a bad injury before he can step out on a Sunday rhino.

Favourites group seem to be negatively inspiring each other. No sign of improvement from Jordan, if anything he's still going backwards.

|
By:
Yeah, not what he was hoping for here at all. What do we make of Woodland's rd? psychological damage from last tourny or just a bad day at the office?
