it is a wedge with the loft of a 8 iron. Probably a longer club as standard as well.

Years ago was playing the back nine at Fairhaven golf club. There was a hold up on the 17th Par 3 160 yards and one of the club greenkeepers playing behind came onto the tee so we asked him to join us for the last couple of holes. I hit a 6 iron and was one of the longer hitters at the club at that time so the hole must of been playing into the wind.He pulled out a wooden shafted niblick and smashed it over the green with a balata titleist.Ray Neald was his name.

I hit 7 iron 150 carry...100/105 yards pw...used to hit it much further but swing well within myself now and tend to hit my targets far more often now.

85% of the tour players can hit a full PW 150yds, easy.

Anyone can hit a wedge 165 yards when thy thin it!
Most competent players hit it about 100-120. Fantasist amateurs claim they can hit it longer than tour pros ![]() |

My rounded up/down measured maximum carry yardages playing off a handicap of 8 are...
60 Wedge - 65 Yards 56 Wedge - 80 Yards 51 Wedge - 110 Yards 48 Wedge - 125 Yards 9-Iron - 140 Yards 8-Iron - 150 Yards 7-Iron - 165 Yards 6-Iron - 180 Yards 5-Iron - 190 Yards 4-Iron - 205 Yards 3-Iron - 225 Yards 3-Wood - 275 Yards Driver - 315 Yards All the above were measured off the deck except for the 3-wood & Driver which were teed-up. It's a fact that most pro's play with club lofts that are totally alien to your average club golfer. You can take their yardages with a pinch of salt as their clubs simply do not represent standard, off the peg, lofts. |

Read what I said. MAXIMUM carry yardages.
I don't flush it every time, hence the handicap! I probably hit just one or two 300+ drives per round on average. If you disbelieve, arrange a time and a place and you can see for yourself. |

most people will hit their clubs say a wedge 110...then one day theyll hit a screamer of wedge 150 and from then on thats now their yardage for said club.eventho it will be a few weeks before they hit that shot again.what i notice with the big hitters is they score very poorly around the greens.not sure why.maybe its because they work less on that than the guy who really needs to get up and down for his pars.

You must have a terrific swing with driver/threewood ronsk.
I also play off 8 and estimate my carry when hitting it perfect to be : 60 Wedge - I use this club for "trick shots" around the green only 56 Wedge - 100 Yards 51 Wedge - 115 Yards 48 Wedge - 135 Yards 9-Iron - 145 Yards 8-Iron - 160 Yards 7-Iron - 170 Yards 6-Iron - 175 Yards 5-Iron - 185 Yards 4-Iron - 195 Yards 3-Iron - don't use it anymore 3-Wood - 230 Yards Driver - 250 Yards |

Eddie - My three favourite clubs are Driver, 3-wood & 3-Iron. My long game is a real strength. My short game isn't! I've always been a dreadful putter, and when I say dreadful, I mean dreadful! I went to the jumbo grip in recent times and I'm slowly turning into a half-decent putter. My chipping still needs work, plenty of it, but I will get there with that too.
I started playing at the age of 18 and spent the first few years just trying to hit the ball as hard as I could, never really cared where the ball went, just wanted to smash it! I then packed the game up for many years and only went back to playing regularly 7 years ago. I now think about the game in a totally different way. I see the shots I want to play and I'm starting to execute them with greater regularity. It's a huge learning curve, but one thing is for sure, I'm chuffed I started by hitting it hard all those years ago because it's held me in good stead! |

By:
some great distances there ronsk amazed you are off 8 with those distances.
|

By:
I carry 8 clubs in my bag, my distances are:
56SW 70yds 55SW 95yds 9I 130yds 7I 145yds 5I 165yds 2I 190yds Driver 230yds Putter Not far Get round in par or close to it most times, official handicap 3. If you can consistently and accurately hit a driver 300yds then any handicap over scratch is a dismal failure. |

By:
60 wedge flop shots and out of heavy rough never hit of tight lies
56 s wedge 90/95 52 gap 105/110 48 p wedge 120/125 All depends on weather and temperature on a hot day add 10/15% easily on a cold wet day take off 10/15% |

I guess it depends on the courses you play.
If you play on standard club courses (short), then a 230yd drive and a 5i would probably be good enough for most holes. However, take that to a PGA championship course, and a 230yd drive and 5i would still leave you a PW to go! That's only 1 shots down before you've even taken the first putt. |

Wok why carry a 56 and a 55 wedge very little difference unless the bounce are different
The 56* is a bit shortened old Hogan wedge with large flange and bent 5* upright so I can use it as a specialist short game club, the 55* has a Grafalloy Blue shaft in it and TM R7 set head, so I can hit it further but still high, basically use the 56 for everything up to 55yds and the 55 from 55-95yds. Then use the 9I from 95-130yds. There's method in the madness :) |

Play off of 13.
Driver 300+ when i catch it, a leaky fade when i dont 3 wood 240+ if i flush it Hybrid rescue wood 230 teed up, 210 without 1 iron 240 teed up, 220 off the deck 4 iron 210 5 iron 190 6 iron 175 7 iron 165 8 iron 150 9 iron 135 pw 110 sw 80 lw (60) fluffy lie, flop shot or short bunker shot I think that is what i hit mine when playing well, however i much rather go on what i see than what i read yardage wise. many a time i have gone against what i see in the card or on a tee box and play what i see or feel. The capability to hit different shots is important, i think the option of teeing one up, or choking down on an iron is also important. As stated i play off 13 so im no world beater but shot making is great fun and adds to a good round if what you want comes off. |
