im sure he knew the implications of what he was saying, i dont think it was said with the same type of intent as fuzzy but due to their recent spat in was inappropriate and always going to be taken badly by Tiger. I wouldnt be surprised to see Sergio playing alot more on the euro tiur from now on and only going to US for the biggies

If Fuzzy Zoeller had never mentioned fried chicken all those years ago the dish would never have even entered Sergio's mind. Clearly it was just a spur of the moment connection between a certain type of food and Tiger. |

The pair hate each other, Garcia is a total plum for making such a daft comment & playing straight into Woods hands, this incident will only enhance Woods image in the world of golf which up till then was not great imo.
As for Garcia the mans an idiot & may well never recover from this, was not really mentally attuned before to win a major, this was the final nail in the coffin as far as that aspiration is concerned. |

Whilst it was clearly a stupid comment, and Im no fan of Garcia, I don't think he meant it to be racist. Just an off the cuff jibe. A bad joke gone wrong imo. Tiger did choose it for his Masters dinner after all and that is no doubt ingrained on a lot of people's mind.

it was never going to be taken any other way than a racist stereotype whether he was trying to be funny or no, the problem is you can get away with those sort of comments to and about friends, but when its someone you are having a spat with it is only going to have negative meaning.

I'm not saying Garcia is racist don't get me wrong, i say many things and probably much worse to my friends as banter however you can't say things with negative racial undertones to enemies and certainly not on television. It was a mistake and of course he regrets it but the choice of words were racially motivated and that's the problem if it was a white guy he wouldn't have said it.
Also in America things like this are much more of a big deal in the UK i don't think we even make the connection between fried chicken and Black people, but in America there is and its quite sensitive. |

Words by themselves are not inherently racist so that's not really a valid argument, the word black isn't racist but if used in the correct context it becomes so. Its not what words you can and can't say its how they are said. I really don't understand the so we can't say fried chicken anymore posts or is that a racist word when it isn't the actual issue.

In america it goes back to slavery times and the fried chicken thing is associated with poor black people ect, most other places it doesnt really mean anything though on the internet nowadays it has become a big thing and many memes play on it so it has become much more popular and current in recent times

Moisok I don't think you get it or willfully ignore it. I don't think any one on here is saying Woods is a fantastic role model. Woods' past does not make what Garcia did ok. I think casual racism is tolerated far more in Spain than the UK. Maybe he meant it, and maybe he didn't. Only one person knows, but I know which side of the fence I come down on. For the record I wouldn't want to meet either of them.

Well sickof there wouldn't be the same reaction if Woods mentioned paella for good reason. If you didn't know why the fried chicken comment had an undertone to it before you have now had it explained by several people. That you ignore that is up to you. I am done with this topic now. Time to move on and perhaps the two of them can get back to talking about golf.

there's one thing for sure Woods is no fool and he will gauge everybodies response and milk it for all it's worth unlike the Fuzzy Zoeller situation when his first response was of hurt which quckly changed when he realised Fuzzy's popularity!

not racist just an outdated word i suppose like half-cast ect. in south africa mixed race refer to themselves as coloured in places, but not really anywhere else nowadays

This is pretty straight forward. Both of them are 2 of the worst examples of egotistical sports people with no grace currently doing the rounds - forget the ability. Sergio is thick. He is trying to be funny and has no clue about the nuances of humour of the english language. This was not a racist comment. It was the comment of a completely ignorant person without any clue to the pretty unsavoury racist undertones. They deserve each other.......
