You're far too reckless Undern, I fear it'll all be gone today. I hope not. Good luck. Cool

To be fair, anyone who can octuple their money in just a week has to be reckless. It looks hugely impressive, but these challenges have always done so bu then have always come down like a pack of cards.

Agreed DB, when you're winning like Udern was then you're a genius, when it all falls to pieces you're a mug.

He reminds me of a poker player who plays a short stack better than he does a large stack. Which is why he needs to bank some money when he gets to a certain amount and start again imo.

He's a likeable and honest bloke and I do wish him the best of luck.

Yep us Aussies are a likeable lot Laugh ...

Yep I did lose a lot on the cricket ... (if I was watching I would have traded towards the end) .... lost a lot on one of the Aussie football matches trying to get a big win on under goals markets .... yet they kept scoring Cry .... then lost some more on the West Ham game .... trying not to lose too much this afternoon in the rugby.

I just knew. I was listening to it this morning, and my first thought was that this could be the end of this challenge.

Not the end of the challeneg Darlo ... lost £1400 in the cricket and a lot more in the Aussie footy. Was down to around the £5K mark.

Lets just say my lay of Scotland has helped me get back into this challenge Laugh ...

I will update fully later ... this is today's current p&l.

Aussie: Cricket: -£1,438.00 | Greyhound Racing: -£273.99 | Horse Racing: £1,188.77 | Soccer: -£2,104.97 Total P&L:  -£2,628.19

UK: Greyhound Racing: £50.34 | Horse Racing: £970.40 | Rugby Union: £1,937.20 | Soccer: -£1,103.52 | Tennis: £1,215.00 Total P&L:  £3,069.42

Nice lay of Scotland in the rugby .... greened up a bit and bet on tennis when Fed was around 3.4 ish at beginning of the match ... greened some of that as well.

Not sure about betting on the Welsh match .... the sensible part says no while the other part of me .... says why not.

Mmmm .... now I am a fairly intelligent guy and even I think (like in past attempts) been utterly stupid in some of my betting.

It has all come crashing down .... bank now down to £750 from a high of around £10.5K from memory ....  I blame the change in BF system for withdrawals as three times I withdrew £5K only to turn around and cancel the withdrawal. Oh I also blame the English who play **** at every sport going, not to mention Tottenham and a few other wasted bets I did during a day/night of betting madness.

So I am going to finish this challenge with a loss of £250 .... oh what could have been .... least it was a memorable one though for once I wish I start one of these and actually do it sensibly.

You're blaming BF because you didn't have the discipline to let a £5K deposit go through???

I hadn't noticed the thread but, bloody Undern, that is, again, another time you need to read your own posts and put it with other quotes on a plackard above your computer and read it every thirty minutes.

It still blows my mind when I see people burn two years of groceries in a day.

Your ability to win is not the question mark (though, again, there are dogs negative).  The question marks are around your ability to avoid loss.

There's nothing noble in kicking a man when he's down, and it's pretty much certain that undern will be his own harshest critic at the moment, but I think there is something interesting that can be drawn from this episode.

You can't learn discipline - it's either something you've got or something you've not. For all that someone might look like they're efficiently trading the markets and making impressive (seriously impressive in undern's case) levels of profit, if they're still a gambler at heart it will all ultimately end up going wrong.

If you're going to make this game pay you must have discipline - it's the boring backbone to any successful strategy. Turning 1k into 10k in about a week is no mean feat: draw down, start again, repeat ten more times and there's your 100k in less than three months. Sounds easy, but I wonder if being disciplined precludes such rapid bank growth, i.e. does discipline inherently lead to a more conservative approach?
By:
Darlo Bantam
When: 02 Mar 15 00:46
@McNulty: I think having true discipline in the first place would seriously restrict those winnings in the first place. It's alright saying if I'd had discipline I wouldn't have lost £2k (enter your own amount in here) on that bet, when in reality, you wouldn't have won £500, £500, £500, £500 beforehand perhaps because discipline may have made you red out on one of those wins in the first place.
By:
HonkyJoe
When: 02 Mar 15 01:18
Undern couldn't bet the way he does if he had discipline. He raises his bets when he loses. Sometimes he gets mostly wins and so doesn't need to bet big at any stage. Those days, he compliments himself on his sensible betting. But when he starts losing (and he always has lots of reasons for why he bet 'badly' - he was tired, somebody upset him, friends came round for dinner etc.), he just puts down bigger bets. He usually gets away with this several times. And then it goes wrong. Very wrong.

He isn't just a simple gambler though. I've seen Undern do numerous challenges like this, and he clearly has some skill in there. As I've said here and on a couple of his other threads, if he looked to treble a £1K pot before taking out the money and starting again, he'd (theoretically) do well overall.  However, I think he has a huge huge problem with money control. Three times he tried to withdraw £5K, and each time he couldn't stop himself from halting the withdrawal.

He's got to learn to control that. Deep down, though, I think there's very little chance he can do that.
By:
HonkyJoe
When: 02 Mar 15 01:20
And yes, Darlo's right. Telling Undern to find true discipline would be like coaching Diego Costa or Roy Keane to play without aggression. You won't change them. And if you do, you'll obliterate what's there.

One of the first lesson's I learnt with Betfair and discipline was when my son got to the age of 2 or so and had a minder X amount of days per week.

I quickly learnt that the minute I stood up and went to pick him up in the afternoon, the day was done.  Any time I came home with him and even if he was off happy playinl, I didn't go on.

Why? He would come down the hall or call me or simply want to hang with his dad.

There is always another horse race and football match.

And if mine came across as kicking a man when he is down, not my intention.  Simply as I have said before; undern, I wish you would read your own posts or atleast withdraw some of the money and "enjoy it" to remind yourself (something we are all guilty of on some level or the other at one time) that those figures on the screen are actually real money and not just figures on a ledger.

The "cancel Withdrawal" that most/all of the bookies use nowadays is pretty shameful imo.

I'm sorry the challenge failed for you Undern, yet again there was big highs and lows. Good luck to you.

Some very wise words posted above too.

Agree.  Bookmakers must hire psychologists to come up with these ideas.
By:

Shameful yes.  But if you can't even exercise enough self-control to stop yourself from using the cancel withdrawal option, you probably shouldn't even be loose on the markets!    Just hit the withdrawal command, and go and turn off the computer for a bit!

Challenge Update:
I must admit I do like to do these challenges in my own way .... with varying amounts of stupidity thrown in. However I assure you I do take some of the betting very seriously and I do have a number of strategies/signals I am looking for however as you have all alluded to I do let myself down.

Like Shapeshifter mentions I do need to remind myself it is real money I am winning and losing ... trust me it is real money Laugh .... I'm afraid the temptation to simply cancel the withdrawal is too tempting during my up and down times.

Betting is a mind-game and it is terribly hard to continue with a challenge when you know you have just made then lost a nice bit of cash .... only to go back to square. However to keep some interest in my life outside of work I will continue the challenge. I had a reasonable last day of betting so will keep it going and see where the chips land. I will do the profit reports for the last couple of days based on a close/open at midnight.

I will try and play sensibly but I won't guarantee it. Even today I did a couple of hit and hope bets ... then again this latest big up and down might have altered some brain cells in me.

Back in now. Mmm so I stayed up after the update and did a bit more betting only to waste £700 or so on a footy match hoping for goals ... yep no goals ... got to bed around 1am ... up early, now tired and mentally fatigued. So the bank is now down to £1K mark ... well actually £1012 but whose counting Laugh.

I am not continuing with this challenge ... gave it a shot but ultimately I can't seem to push on and to be honest it (as I pointed out in my last post) is mentally taxing when you have won so much in a short space of time to then have to do it again because like it not with these challenges you hit a high figure then if you go back a step or two (or 50) you only feel like you are again moving forward once you get past that original high.

I am sure some know what I am on about. Anyway again I had a fun (in a twisted sort of way) time and I may come back when I feel ready to take the challenge on again in public ... all the best to one and all.

GL. Maybe 1k to 10 k would have been more realistic?

Cheers stewarty b. I still hang around on BF betting (although not as much as I used to) so I may do mini-challenges or perhaps like you say £1K to £10K etc. Just read about someone trying a £10 challenge ... but my problem is that I greening up where needed so hard to put something up and then have to explain I actually greened up on the bet. TBH just feel mentally tired from the last week or so ... so best to let it go.

Shirley 1-10 withdraw 8 then 2-20 etc ,you may not have Discipline Undern but with a right plan you could well be very profitable ,you certainly have the bottle ,which is something that is deffo needed ,trying to get the lot in one go is
your downfall ,g luck if you try again Happy
