BF's  over 12 years old now ,and i assume the majority of gamblers have tried the site by now  - but i haven't seen any free bets given for the exchange site for a while now .

I'm a firm beliver this is what pulls the punters in ,even the smart ones - and also BF used to stay in touch with clients by phone if they hadn't used the site for a while .
The site is also deliberately misleading and it's hard to find key markets, theyre never in any logical order  -everything directs you to the new site which isn't trader friendly .
When you want to go to the old site a reminder pops up  -now ,that doesn't happen in reverse ,also look at what sits directly above the refresh key on the exchange page so it's easy to press by mistake  - exactly . It's an frustrating site to navigate .

These are little things that make the difference   imo

acc, i don't think a low base commission like Pinnacle that would work  - you just need the site to have in place a fairer charge and a well maintained site to attract more folk so it's easier to make a decent whack in the first place .

In other words ,p/charges are used to make the site better ,and not worse

I don't think Swedes e.g would opt for lower taxes at the expense of much lower wages

It's a global networked world we live in and things are evolving fast, Betfair needs to adapt or die. At the moment Betfair is dying at the edges.

I'd have a running total on the BF homepage of the amount won by winners.  Let it go up in close to real time.  It would be the sum of all the winning accounts.

"BF, the site where our winners have taken out £217,534,143.50 in winnings etcetera, going up on a daily basis.  "Our winners have won £217m so far, bet now on BF and you too could join them".  Most people have no clue about the size of the winners on BF, and publicising that a few people have become fantastically rich through using BF can only do BF good.  People don't necessarily mind if they don't become betting bourgeoisie, all they definitely do want is a fair run for their money and think that, well, it could be them too.

Yeah that would be great. And we could be given sponsorship deals like poker players Cool

I first came here from a free bet. I did the same with WHills, and to lesser extent other bookies. But in terms of here, one £25 several years ago has now given them far more back in commission.

When BF started, narrowband was all the rage, and I'm not even sure broadband existed.  Looking at the BF site, it doesn't seem to have changed much since around 2004.  There is so much clever stuff out there, and stuff that could be gleaned from elsewhere, in both the betting industry, and outside it, and BF never seems to embrace anything new.  Grokr is really clever with what it does musically, it is stuff like that which should inspire BF.  Instead, they hired the crack trading team, and put often much shorter prices, at often tiny amounts, in a sportsbook which complicates the BF message.  Google and FB snap up the brightest and best IT guys and IT startups, whereas BF rests on some increasingly ancient laurels.

Nobody will convince me or any of us there isn't a massive market out there of people who want to have a bet, so the problem isn't the target market/audience (in the way that demand for narrowband collapsed, demand for betting hasn't).  So a good platform, fairly priced, will be attractive.  It's up to BF if it wants to be that platform, but the chances are it is unlikely that will happen if they don't fix the problems they face, and sooner rather than later.

A rival could bring in a PC system via the front-door, perfectly legitimately, whilst leaving BF with all the PR problems from the PC.

BF collect PC at almost the end-point (a tax on weekly winnnings) [the actual end point would be just a tax on net withdrawals].  However, in 2013, a bookmaker could derive efficient prices from the sportsbook, and then restrict size available to accounts based on win-rate/track record.  A fish logging in should be able to get a lumpy bet, whilst you could give even the sharpest of shrewdies a few pounds at each step on the odds ladder.  Bets from shrewd accounts would move the price, as would volume of bets overall, to limit exposure.  Done this way, a PC by account profile, rather than by weekly winnings, means that winning accounts still stay open, but there is no image damage from a 60% tax on winnings.  BF's most valuable asset is its customer base, but its second most valuable asset is its tissue, and that is being cannibalised already in a fairly unsophisticated way anyway.

Looking around for stuff which is innovative and cutting edge, this company Ezugi have this video to market their products

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7vhqFIebEY

Now, these guys are B2B, so they are not a rival for BF, so this is not spamming their stuff on here.  But if you look at their promo video, there is the mix of social media, twitter, social gaming, live roulette with attractive female dealers, quick spins on other games available.  This is the direction BF should have gone in light years ago.

If you compare the BF, WH, and LB sportsbooks, BF is in 3rd place again, when it should really be in 1st place.

I think there is more to play for, even in bf's home market, than pessimists realise.

Mass public use of the internet came in around 15 yrs ago, so anyone under 40 (perhaps except the bottom 20% of manual professions) will have access to it at work and will have used it at school; there will be no barriers to their using bf. Even some older shop regulars will use mobiles.

W/ the composition of the betting public changing, bf shd be where 3.65 are, and they just need narrowly to think how to get there. The idea of having fatter margins through the sportsbook is useless if they're not attracting new, fun bettors. Imv they shd make a narrow pitch on having the best price on correct scores and horses 5 mins. before the off. They shd get their own Ray Winstone, hammer in the message about best price (and not being shut down) and go all out for turnover.

The stock market won't punish them if there is evidence of an irreversible sales shift away from Lads and the high-margin players to a more accurate price-finding mechanism and better exposure to risk. They shd suffer an extraordinary amount on margin and price and take in a huge amount on sales.

This is a live statistical game analysis of Crystal Palace v Fulham, which at the moment is at about the hour mark.

The BF game page for this match should incorporate many of these features/analysis.  This is what a good exchange should look like.

Opta provide that data. Its about 1 minute behind live. The data depicted on b365 and hills I think is from betradar and is very close to live for most matches. Its almost addictive to watch if you have a bet on.

All these services are very expensive. If you want them they have to be paid for. Do you want a professional no frills exchange that is cheap to use or a recreational site with live dealers and fancy data?

Ok, granted they cost money, but I saw live twitter feeds during the Obama v Romney presidential debates, one Republican, one Democrat, which were fascinating and provided live reaction/coverage of the debates.  The tv feed was centrally placed on screen, with the two twitter streams on either side.  Would it really cost an exchange that much to have live twitter feeds next to the market?

I can actually think of something brand new which would be fascinating, could be done internally by an exchange (as opposed to paying Opta etcetera), and would boost both betting volume and page hits.  But do BF listen to any of us, ever?  I could see the new LB exchange doing it if they were looking for new ideas.

If I had the choice between owning a no frills exchange, or a rec site with all the bells and whistles, the latter would win hands down.  BF have that moneylust too, where they smell the juicy profits and growth flowing towards their rivals.  Tbh, any exchange computer/laptop page should look to be a one-stop shop as an entertainment and betting hub.  (On a mobile it cannot be that, it has to be simple and clean).  On a computer/laptop it should be THE page to have open along with the actual match itself on your tv screen.

Out of all the posters on here only 2 or 3 seem to think that being able to put up large bets without spooking the market is of any importance. Obviously anyone can drip feed large bets in over time using the API but do we only want large bettors who are capable of utilising the API. It seems the answer is yes. Most on this thread prefer paying for each sweetie individually so they can ponce off the information. Not many more than that seem to be at all worried about losers leaving the site with a bad impression. Betfair made a big mistake when they brought out a pc that threatened all winners rather than the parasites **** responsible for the rot but they'd have to be insane to turn round and let the ponces go back to the free lunch they had for 8 or so years.

Get rid of the ponces by getting rid of the ridiculous interface and the dodgy rules that support them. Betfair taking over Asia? Don't make me laugh. When the Asians look at a betfair market they're probably rotfptl at the liquidity and if one of the big players did decide to try it they'd be rotfptl at the reaction to their offer.

By all means bring up the massive ir tennis/cricket liquidity again. This is what happens when you create a market that caters for large bets. Unfortunately it only caters for those familiar with the built in "edge" rather than all users.

Ann witt, the same phenomenon has happened in financial markets, showing your hand/giving away information is a problem in all efficient markets, and not intrinsic to BF.  There's not a lot at their current low level of sophistication in the sports markets, that they can do about it.  Dark pools would be great in your case, where you could leave liquidity up, and it would only be matched if a sufficiently lumpy opposing trade was placed.

rcng, re your penultimate post. I wasn't calling all pc payers parasites. As I've said, bf made a big mistake applying it to all winners regardless of m.o. Re your latest question, once I was going racing at Hamilton the following day. Didn't want to take barrowloads of cash so stuck up something like 10 1K+ backs overnight. By the time I had to leave peanuts had been matched so I cancelled. Half of them started longer than the requested odds. Had I left them up they'd have been the only bets matched. Such bets just act as bookends unless the momentum starts working the other way.

balla, dark pools (another finger lickin nausea from our city friends) would be better than nothing but I'd like to see the back of the first come first served rule as it facilitates insiders.

I didn't realise this was a thread about the problem users have that putting up large bets spooks the market.  Has anybody ever said it's not a problem?  I'm baffled as to how you reach that conclusion.

There is a problem with heat, sand storms and lack of water in the Sahara.  I'd say the two problems are similar.

"One thing's for sure, it does not act in the interests of giving recreational players a better deal".

How is that a sure thing?  How is it in consumer's interests not to know what the price of something is?  The fact that large bets spook the market, is that it leads to the right price being reached a lot quicker for a lot less money.  It's bad if your aim is to make money gambling.  If there are less people making money gambling, the argument is its better for the little fish.  That was Betfair's reasoning behind the PC.

To be fair this only really an issue in horseracing when there is so much inside information. As it gets closer to the off the liquidity grows. Are people really going to bet thousands on opposing opinions early in the morning if there are no prices and volumes to see? Can you just change it for racing and nothing else?

With soccer (and other sports) there is less inside information so you see pinny, ibc, sbo putting up price and max volume per bet on each outcome. As the game gets closer for the big matches this gets into tens of thousands. They are showing their hand to 102% to 103% books.

The same is true to an extent on Betfair except the basic commission rate makes it expensive for soccer.

I am not convinced that removing the limit order book from view will help Betfair grow.

Getting rid of the PC obviously would. I have models virtually ready to go which would place decent liquidity into soccer and tennis markets. This could be used for cashout and general bets for everyone.

But with the PC in place I am better off playing small on Betfair and placing my big bets elsewhere. Its crazy. But with or without the PC I would still like potential opponents see what I am offering so they can decide if they want to bet against me.

I hate looking in a shop windows and not seeing how much things cost (I would not bother going in and asking) and I don't order things unless I can see they are stock.

Its not just an issue with horse racing frog although horse racing has a specific issue with insider trading.  It's a problem with many sports.  Most important is that you can copy prices from elsewhere, but also something that can be priced up by mathematics, sports with a high chance element and a high casual interest have less problems (which is why football is perfect as it ticks all three boxes).  Many sports it's either one up all up or no one up at all.  The industry is parasitic to it's core.

I one made a joke that it would be easier to get £100 on a Lithuanian third division match than it would to be able to get a tenner on the 100m Olympic Final.  It's a joke but it's much nearer to the truth than you would think.

You don't bet with UK bookmakers then? As I said earlier, by drip feeding into early markets I could often get 2 or 3 hundred on one earlier that shortened considerably later on. Why though do I have to make thousands of API requests over hours in order to do so and why do some of the people I'm being matched with have to do the same? Wouldn't it be better if we just put up larger orders at various prices on the horse and every hour or so the exchange matched those limit lay orders that were consistent with those limit back orders. Or should the exchange only be a place where people with computing degrees are allowed to bet? Just because you can see exactly what's there that doesn't mean a) it's what you want or b) it will be there if you do. In fact on betfair b) is certainly not the case. particularly if you're a newbie on a 30 second refresh rate. As I was looking up betfair, I saw a bet that wisnae there, it wisnae there again today, I wish that bet would go away.

There are guide prices.

The fact that large bets spook the market, is that it leads to the right price being reached a lot quicker for a lot less money.  It's bad if your aim is to make money gambling

If you think recreational punters win out of those pendulum odds swings (& it doesn't just happen on horses) who is it the spoofers are winning off.

It would depend on what was showing on the other side but, generally, it would shorten unless it was an insider lay (in which case the bet would be snatched up IF it was there long enough).

Of course the lumpy bet acts as a bookend in empty markets.

If I feel I know something (poss. based on gallops as I live nr Newmarket) the last place I want my money is bf. Faced with the choice of having £200ew on a 20-1 in the shops through three placers or hanging around trying to get buttons on at 24-1 & 26-1, I'll go down the shop route. This is in instances where I feel the price is likely to shorten (tho' there aren't many cases, as we're talking about hcappers coming back to form not usually in sprints).

Anyone w/ an information edge will prefer to get a lump on at 20-1 than pennies at 25s when the true price is plausibly 8s or 9s. It isn't esp. in bf's interests either to let a lot be matched at the out-of-line price, since the same winners will beat the great mass of losers more quickly. The more accurate bf is at price-finding, the worse it will be for anyone w/ an edge.

could you not get lumps on by dutch laying the field and taking that percentage cut which in effect would probably mean you are still getting 20/1
By:

When: 22 Oct 13 17:16
askari, you're looking at that from a betfair view rather than a feckfair one. a) if there's money on the lay side for that horse at those odds the amount you'll get matched will be dependent on who else wants on. If there's 200 on the lay side and 200 of smaller bets along with your 200 then you'll maybe only get matched for peanuts. Remember there will be a build up of bets between auctions rather than the sparse markets you're looking at now. Anyway, you say that as if the insider currently sticks up his 200 and warns everyone. He doesn't because he knows what will happen. He waits till the market busies up and what happens isn't far off what would happen on the feckfair final auction.

A good point rsng, and people, like myself but without the programming knowledge, would be more ;likely to attempt that on an auction based system where it wouldn't require thousands of api calls.

Are there really people out there willing to lay £3k at 14.0 on one horse. i.e. bet £40k ish to win £3k on an unraced two year old at Redcar?

Unless someone is trading or looking to lay a full book (both types of gamblers who want the full limit order book) who is going to offer that? Only someone with inside information. The market just does not exist in racing.

Most one off laying is on horses at 5.0 or less. All the action is at the top of the market.
